Discrimination In The Psychiatric Field

I, luckily, have never been institutionalize but I have had four psych ward visits and a school year at a school for teens with behavior problems. In all but the last psych ward I encountered discrimination. To be fair, I would say that only at the school and the second and third psych ward commitments I was discriminated against for my gender orientation but in the first one I was not out and they did discriminate against me for Asperger's by punishing me for harmless behaviors that are part of my autism. They would have discriminated against me but I wasn't out yet. I know that because my second time I was there and I was trying to explain my gender orientation they discriminated against me by banning me from mentioning it. In my problem school I was also banned from talking about transgender issues and even from coming out of the closet. They took it so far that they went out of their way to prevent me from using the androgynous nurses bathroom, which everyone else could use, to force me to use the girls'. This violated Massachusetts law. In my third hospitalization they did give me a separate room which was better than the second time but they still insisted on calling me she all the time even though the standards of care require them to call me he. The fourth time they were actually really good about it and used the proper pronoun all the time. I have heard of other transsexuals getting much discrimination in the psychiatric field. Has anyone else here experienced it?

You didn't say how long ago these events happened but I can assure you that all licensed mental health professionals and facilities are subject to censure and even having their licenses taken away by their respective governing ethical practices boards for discrimination against people of alternative sexual preference and gender identity. You do have legal recourse, Hon if only for the sake of correcting the problem for others.

In the past year I had several people complain of discriminatory remarks around their sexual preferences at a local outpatient mental health center by a worker. A verbal complaint was filed with the program director who censured the employee and brought in a paid consultant to do an all staff training around sensitivity and non-discrimination when treating people of alternative sexual preference and gender identity.

Ranging from three years to one year. :-/ My family couldn't afford suing. We can't even pay our bills. God knows we made plenty of verbal complaints and basically they ignored us. >.<

Amazingly, this is Massachusetts! But I guess, as far as I know, Massachusetts has a bit of a history with corruption among the psychiatric community, so I guess that in place where punitive electric shocks, such as those in the Judge Rotenberg Center, are okayed calling someone the wrong pronoun isn't really a serious problem even if it's against the rules. :-/

Well the guy I saw had already decided I wasn't trans before we even talked, based on his opinion of my borderline.

Wow, hadn`t heard of that happening before... so did the person i saw, the sad thing was i actually believed her for a while... :/

Yep, i guess i have, once was by the woman above, the second was by a child psych, i asked her to call me a male name and use male pronouns and she refused and basically told me i was lying about my gender feelings... :(

I was seeing a counselor a few years ago who thought she could cure me of my GID. And my first psychiatrist tried to blame everything I was going through on my GID. He denied the fact that I was bipolar. Needless to say I stopped going to him and since then 4 other Dr's have confirmed along with GID that I am bipolar. That first Dr was and still is a bozo and has misdiagnosed many people in my area.

I'm not sure that's quite true.  If it was done by private entities?  Like most landfills here are privately owned, as are power plants.  I can't see a reason they couldn't be combined.    Right now, garbage companies in my area harvest the methane produced by the landfill to run their trucks.  The put all sorts of pipes in among the layers of the landfill to collect it.  Compressed natural gas (CNG) can be used with only minor modifications to existing engines, and many truck stops are adding CNG pumps as some fleets transition to it.    A fuel's usefulness is often measured in BTU's per gallon.  CNG has approximately the same BTUs as diesel or gasoline (138,000 or so.)  Pure ethanol and E85 have much less - like 76,000 BTUs.

Well, after a week on HRT, as many would probably have predicted, I've noticed exactly zero mental or physical changes. Patience appears to be the key here as hard as that will be after finally getting my transition moving. Guess I just need to sit back and enjoy the ride. Hope that my first blood tests after two months will show hormone levels moved acceptively.

A therapist appt is a great place to dress femme, If you want to!   It also sounds like a great safe venue to speak softer and more feminine, if that’s where you want to go.     Not sure the rules now.  But if you’re seeking HRT you might have to show them something to convince the money system that your case is medically necessary.  Obvious feminine clothes and mannerisms displayed by a human assigned male at birth (perhaps this is you?)  could be check marks towards them pushing your case through.     Please be whatever brings you love for who you are.   I have pursued this all the way through obstacles, mistakes, humiliation, and pain. And I  am so so so grateful  Hugs 😊 🌈🌈

Puzzled.  My United Healthcare Medical Advantage DOES cover gender affirming surgeries.  The HARD part is finding a surgeon that's in-network.  If the surgeon is out of network, the coverage is 40%/60% (they pay 60%).    Sadly, the surgeon I'd like to have, Dr Russell Sassani, in south Florida, is out-of-network and requires full payment prior to surgery.  I'm certain that there have been insurance issues for him and others, in the past.  Most GOOD surgeons for trans surgeries don't submit insurance, though they WILL help you with the codes, etc.  Actually, he does accept some regular insurance and original Medicare.     Anyway, I hope you were able to get your surgery or at least closer to being able to do so.

Welcome Madelyn, glad you are here and best wishes on your journey!!   I started HRT about two months ago... Had my initial appointment in December... Other than a bra underneath my clothes, I likely didn't look feminine at all ... I was nervous as heck but the doc put me at ease...   Just be yourself... do what feels comfortable for you ... The pace is up to you... Remember, you are one of a kind and have inestimable worth...    EasyE

I have been creating a space to be expressive. It's def not completed yet, I have loads of ideas still. Thinking about re-painting, maybe a light pastel purple or light pink, with a satin gloss. Honestly I'm hung on which would look best. Leave a comment if you think it would look better pink or purple. This area is a combination Man-Cave / She Shack. This is my sacred space, I think it's coming out well so far. I love this room, it inspires my creativity. Tho, I think there's not much man left in the cave lol.

Then there is how FDR is revered, and the ridiculous reluctance of the left to ever say anything negative about Biden.  It destroys their credibility.  Obsessed with Trump, they ignore how much worse Biden is.

The title of this thread is highly offensive.

Oh…. Now I get what the transgender agenda is.  I missed it.   I just didn't realize he was running again.   Silly me.   I'm going to quit now.  I've already been an ass
