Selfishness

I've seen a few threads about "Being selfish" going around, and I found a quote that really speaks volumes to me regarding the experiences and the difficulty of being transgendered and having to deal with other people's needs and reactions:

Selfishness is not living as one wishes to live, it is asking others to live as one wishes to live.” - Oscar Wilde

I thought it might give people some food for thought. And I think it is true- the problem isn't that we want to live as we are, the problem is that part of living as we are involves other people having to change to accept it. Hopefully one day we'll live in a world where choosing to transition won't be seen as selfish at all.

I am so in agreement - I have a hard time thinking of wishing to survive as being selfish while we are doing no physical harm to anyone - now if my transition depended on the death or dismemberment of a fellow human being then it would be terribly selfish but it does not so now the selfishness is moved to the part of the people that do not want us to transition because they want to hol onto the image that they love.

Love ya,

Sally

That is a great and meaningful quote to post here. It really has a lot to do with us in transitioning. I just might have to use this one on my wife but I don't think it will go over too well right now. Maybe on second thought I will just wait a while before using this one. Thanks for the quote though.

Love,

Sarah F

BUT BUT BUT

I spent my WHOLE LIFE trying to be what people wanted me to be!

I just couldn't do it anymore! Am I selfish for wanting to be who I really am?

You know.....

I HATE this topic.....Selfishness....DANG..

It's almost like some ancient greek gods tasking us mortals with something with no good outcome...we lose either way...

And, it's not like us Trans folks aren't dealing with enough guilt ....

I mean...If I transition, I'm taking away my wife's husband.......

And if I don't she's taking away my happiness.......

Who's selfish?

Dang....

Should cut the red wire....

Or, should I cut the blue wire?

So the only true selfish act we might commit is demanding that other's accept us.

But if you offer them the choice, of accept me or not but if you don't please ignore me and/or keep any comments to yourself, then that isn't selfish.

Also what I think people don't understand is that

not being selfless != selfish

trying to be who we aren't for other's sake is selfless. It's caring entirely about others and not at all about yourself.

trying to be true to ourselves is just normal, it is neither selfless nor selfish, it's just how we should behave, in addition to that we still do everything we can to minimise the discomfort of others.

(!= means not equal for those of you who aren't programmers)

Lizzy im with you, 50 years or more living in a gender waste land, doing as other wished. Finally that became unsustainable and I had to become who I was meant to be. If that is selfish then Im guilty as charged.

To escape Gaza is already an achievement. And then to be trans?’: the women defying national and gender boundaries. https://www.theguardian.com/film/article/2024/may/16/yolande-zauberman-documentary-the-belle-from-gaza-cannes-film-festival

Accidents happen.  So do heat-of-the-moment murders, without premeditation or trans-related hate.  It will take a trial to really figure it out.     One thing we can see from this is that it is people in our circles of acquaintances, friends, and partners who are the ones who usually hurt us.  Not someone random. We have to be careful who we trust.

Friday May 17th is IDAHOBIT (International Day Against HOmophobia, BIphobia and Transphobia).   Do you acknowledge or celebrate it? Do you do anything special for it, like taking part in any organized events or activities?   I'm not an activist and I prefer to fly under the radar, but I am slowly becoming aware of important dates. I have been aware of the date of IDAHOBIT for a few weeks now, but other important 'rainbow' dates have not been etched into my brain yet.    I will wear my favorite pride t-shirt as a token acknowledgement of the day, but it probably won't be seen; cool weather here will mean that it will be hidden under a sweater.

Happiness for me comes from being cognizant of the things that make me feel good.   Sunshine.   Pandering to my inner woman.   Knowing that some people in my life really 'know' me.   Vacations, and Eggs Benedict at an alfresco cafe.   My wife and I being telepathic.   Grandchildren.   Music.   Wine!

True.  Every trans death is not a hate crime. There is so much hate expressed by some people, that we kinda get to expect it.

happiness to me is being ME. At all times, and it has yet to happen.

Hello & welcome, giz! Your post makes me remember how excited I was to join here too. I also had queer friends at the time I joined, but any of my trans friends lived a long distance away. So most local queer friends are gay & I felt uncomfortable coming out to them bc I couldn't assume they'd understand genderqueerness. So it was a thrill to join here and immediately have access to do many wonderful, genuine, kind & thoughtful friends-to-be.   Are you saying you're concerned that if you come out to your queer friends that somehow your parents will find out?     My love, I just want to affirm that that's not a weird dysphoria. It's just dysphoria. And we definitely get it. You're in good company here!     Look forward to seeing you around here & getting to know you. I shoot for androgynous appearance as well, leaning towards masculine.   Hope you're having a splendid day!

Listening to a YouTube mix for me and this song came up and I immediately fell in love again and just want to play music with like minded musicians playing OUR music and feel the joy and fulfillment even if no one else gets it. I love to fall into the music....

Funny.....   The day-centre transportation director told me yesterday morning that I was to receive an award, my picture on the website, etc... for having won the billiards tournament (I knew better).   Later that afternoon he returns to "shake my hand" and tell me, "thanks for participating."   I could have told him that was all I would receive earlier. I'm not well liked by management.
