Hi Scooby,

This is a big first step in admitting that you have a problem. You don't have to feel shame. No one here is going to judge you or put you down. Have you considered getting involved with AA and/or NA. Maybe it's time. Something to think about.

You've got to put your shame behind you, Scooby. There are many in the same boat as you, so don't feel that you're alone. Take those first steps. If not for yourself, do it for your family. No one is going to make fun of you. AA can help you if you'll only try. I'm betting you can do it.

Scooby hon :)

There is no shame in admitting that you have a problem. In fact that is really good and courageous.

There is a saying... "if you think you might have a substance abuse problem.... you do".

Hospitals and most churches have information about the times and places for AA and NA meetings. Go seek one out.

The first step is admitting that you have a problem.

You have taken that first step :)

Congratulations.

I am here behind you hon.

Love

Brenda

Hi Scooby!! First I'd like to say how brave you are to admit you have a problem. That in itself is no easy task!! You can't help someone who doesn't want to help themselves.

In admitting not only to yourself, but others, you are seeking help. Be brave dear and take the next step!! Find a AA or NA group to help you thru this.

I think that you will find the comfort and compassion of friends to help and guide you will make things easier in life. So many of us here have gone thru so many things in life that you will find no shortage of support from those that have been to some extent or another - are where you are now.

We are here when you need us. PM someone if you'd are wanting help on a private issue that prefer not to post. Just keep being brave and remember that we are here to help however we can. I'm willingly to do what I can (except for that marmite thing) har - to help.

Luv Kat :)

Scooby,

Being addicted to alcohol or substances is nothing to be ashamed of. It's a physical condition caused by altered levels of neurotransmitters in the brain, not a lack of willpower.

The most important thing is to get help. Many places have AA meetings specifically for LGBT people, and I've found them to be very supportive.

Best of luck,

Val

Dear Scooby,

I know exactly what shame is. I've let is control my life for several years already and have just recently decided I won't deal with this pain anymore.

I'm doing a substance abuse class with the Vets Admin, and I've only had a few classes so far but I realize how much harm I'm doing my mind.

I, and you, don't deserve the punishment we put ourselves through. We're much better people than we think we are.

If you'd like to share the misery and revelations of going through something like this, I think i can walk beside you and share the results.. up and down.

Hugs

We talk all the time! You are one heck of a writer and I love seeing your stuff.

And remember - this is a support site - NO ONE is considered less of a person because of a problem, and that includes drinking and drug usage. GOD help us Scooby - we have it hard as it is. So all the advice above? See the love there? I didn't see even the tiniest bit of judgement or scorn!

You can be ashamed if you want to - but it isn't gonna affect me - because I know you are gonna be fine. Just see if you can get a little help with all that problem you have with all that addictive stuff. Its do-able! You will find out that like gender dysphoria - TAIN'T YOUR FAULT!

And keep us updated! PROMISE? PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE?

Hi Scooby!!

I hope that you are having better days. I haven't seen you post lately, and am a bit concerned.

If you don't feel like being in the forums then by all means PM someone. You'll not find a shortage of friends.

Luv Kat :)

Scooby, we've all done things that we're ashamed of. However, you can't let shae stop you from moving ahead. Admitting you have problems is a courageous first step. Each step that you take is one step closer to where you need to go. It's scary but I believe that you're on the right track.

When you are really ready. Join an AA meeting. Get a sponsor to call when you feel like drinking again.

When you are making decisions about your life that are centered around drinking.

It is time....

Hi Scooby,

I'm very happy to hear that you're doing better. Did you check out AA to see what they had to offer?

Hi, Amanda.  Your story sounds quite familiar, though my pesky body part didn't need the attention of a urologist.  You are in good company here!

Oops.  Sorry, @AmandaJoy, I see you have already posted an introduction.

Hi, @AmandaJoy.  Welcome to Trans Pulse.  Be sure to check out the various forums and join in any threads that interest you.  We'd love to read all about you in the Introductions forum.   -----   I started programming in Dartmouth Basic in high school back in the early 1970s.  I did my degree in Computer Science.  After a brief stint in the "government flying club" (RCAF), I worked as a programmer-analyst and systems analyst for about 25 years.    I am retired now, but I still enjoy programming.  I write a lot of the code for my astrophotography observatory.

WOW HAS IT BEEN A WHILE SINCE I'VE UPDATED!!! Welp, I'm updating now, and it's been a lot of changes.  1. My mom is starting to come around a little (I think). She does refer to me more as her child now, and even offered to help me cut my hair so I think we're making a little progress. I'm still planning on going on T later and I'm gonna start saving up to buy trans tape (I can't wear binders because I have GERD), so hopefully the progress stays. My dad, sibling, friends, and my paternal grandparents have all been super supportive and I'm really lucky for that. My sibling also goes out of their way to introduce me as their brother and it makes me so happy :D 2. I've been socializing a lot more! Mostly on Discord, but I've made some new friends and I'm really happy about that!  3. I'm on birth control! I still need to go to the gyno but my GP got me on the depo shot and it's been working for me so far! My dysphoria has gone through a lot of ups and downs, especially around periods, but that source is pretty much gone now and I feel way better. I do have more dysphoria centered around my chest now but that's pretty easily fixed with baggy shirts most of the time.  4. I know 100% now that I'm hoping for a uterine ablation (cauterizing the uterine tissue so it doesn't grow) at some point in the future and it's likely something I'll have to save up for but from my research it's a lot less invasive and safer than a hysterectomy so I definitely recommend it if people are able to access it. I also know that after that, I want to save up for a reduction to combat the chest dysphoria, and I still like having it sometimes so I'll keep a bit of it (I'm shooting for an A cup, I'm a C cup currently).  5. I've been writing more and I've even got some ideas for art projects! I also got an Archive of Our Own account where I post my finished writing, and I'm starting a book project at my mom's urging (she said she wanted that as her Christmas present so I'm gonna try, might not get it done this year though). I haven't gotten to write much lately but I'm hoping to change that this month.  And finally, 6. I'm gonna be a college junior and I have a career path to pursue! I'm gonna be an archivist, hopefully working for a museum (not too specific on where, I just like museums).  So yeah, a lot of stuff has happened and it's been pretty good!

Around here, a culturally-appropriate gender-neutral form of address is either "dear" or "hun".  It tends to be mostly women who use those, though I did have a man address me as "dear" in a store today.    It could be startling for a come-ffrom-away to hear themselves being addressed that way, but, locally, it is considered a friendly, not particularly creepy, gender-neutral way to address someone.
