Some Good News

Had a pretty good day today.

For anyone who doesn't know, I'm on leave from school and looking at transferring, mainly b/c my social life as a "girl" at my current college was a complete failure and I want to start over as a male, where I can experience college life to the fullest, as a guy, and meet people so that they only ever knew me as male. Make sense?

So I visited one of the schools I got into today. It's about 2 hours by train away from home. So it's still far enough that I won't feel like I'm home cuz faceit I'm tired of living w/ my parents I was actually applying to the school more as a last resort type deal, but turns out I was pleasantly surprised! The school I go to now is a small private university, and I forgot about the plus side of a big school - every club imaginable, bigger campus, wider variety of food and housing options, more diverse student body, and so on. I was focused on "oh i won't like a big school cuz I''ll be in huge lecture halls and only be known as a number, I'll get lost in the crowd." But I didn't get TOO much of that from the school.

Now, I go on this tour of the school. First off, they said that any course you take at an accredited university will transfer in, so long as you get at least a C+. I'm taking courses over the summer at my current college, and I'm already a sophomore. So, awesome. Everything will transfer in.

Now, we go to the admin building. There's a list of all the stuff that's in there and the room numbers. First on the list? "All Gender Restrooms" (!!) My mom saw it before I did and pointed it out to me. They didn't even say "co-ed" or "unisex" or "both gender". They said ALL gender. As in, gender is a spectrum. So I thought that was pretty awesome.

Now, I get home from the tour finally tonight, and sign up for my "new student preferences" online. One of those is housing preferences. They ask a bunch of yes/no questions, like do you want smoke-free, alcohol free, 24-hour quiet rooms, etc. They had one that asked if you want special accommodation, such as for ADA disabilities or if the student identifies as Transgender (haha with a capital "T".) So I said yes. I just need to provide documentation for whatever my "special accommodation" is. Now, either that means I will probably end up rooming with another FTM (which would be great - at my current college, not being out, I've had to room w/ girls and that was a NIGHTMARE: totally awkward, awkward silence and all, couldn't talk to them, heard that my roommate freshman year said she didn't like rooming w/ me because I "never went anywhere" - she didn't know I was trans and like I said my social life as a "girl" just does not work) or, if i don't end up with a ftm, they will probably have to put me in a single, which means I get to live in the apartments. Honestly, I'd prefer living in quads or corridor-style if it means I get to room with another ftm, than get into the apartments (which, needless to say, are nicer) and have a whole place to myself. Like I said i want to start over, so I want to have the full dorm experience as a guy.

Anyway that's my good news. I'm pretty stoked, this all went better than expected. I think this is my new school!

How awesome. I'm really likin the way schools have evolved. Be sure it'll be good for you academically (the whole bigger thing, yeeees I know you said it seems alright, just want you to be ok academically- and yeah, emotionally too but this place sounds like its payin attn to that part). Heck I might be as stoked as you are.

This sounds like a really good set up for you! I'm so glad to hear that this is working out. I have to say I was concerned for you about taking a leave of absence because I've seen that work out very badly for some friends of mine, but it sounds like this is going to be fantastic for you. Like Evan said, make sure it's good academically also though.

I hope you get an ftm roommate (and that you like him too)!

This sounds like a really good set up for you! I'm so glad to hear that this is working out. I have to say I was concerned for you about taking a leave of absence because I've seen that work out very badly for some friends of mine, but it sounds like this is going to be fantastic for you. It has a reputation for being a science school. They have a pre-med program that is pretty reputable and I am most likely looking at being a bio major. I have interests in neuroscience, developmental bio and genetics - they have 2 concentrations called neuroscience and developmental genetics.

So I think academically it's a good fit for me as well.

I do hope I get an ftm roommate, that would be great.
