Beginner Makeup Kit

I was going to purchase Genderlife's transsexual makeup kit until I realized they don't even use encryption when you enter your personal information. I was wondering if anyone knew of a good book or good beginner's makeup kit.

Dearheart,

I am old-school :) Don't fret about makeup kits. For starters, just get some lipstick, mascara, and foundation. You can find these easily in the women's section of Walmart, CVS, Rite Aide, many groceries stores, etc. Trust me, no one will ever question you. Just buy what you want (you can use the back of your hand for color matching if necessary :) )

If you get nailpolish... make sure you get nailpolish remover too :)

Start slow and small. Get used to using make up :)

Susan, Brenda's advice was very sound. You don't have to go to a lot of trouble.

But if a kit is still what you would like to try, you can do what I did and go to a makeup counter in almost any department store - I chose Sephora at

J.C Penney, and (if you're in male mode) tell them you want to purchase a gift for a young niece, or maybe your S.O. They usually have at least one

gift pack or kit that has an assortment of items.

The problem will be that the color shades made not be appropriate for your skin or eyes, but at least you'll have something to practice with.

One other thing you must have is makeup remover pads. Mascara especially is really hard to remove with just soap and water.

Then, go on Youtube and watch some how-to videos.

Have fun!

Thanks Brenda for the information. I will definitely use the back of my hand to match color. I need something for the bags under my eyes. I think I got those from staring at a computer screen for so long.

I'm already passed the nailpolish part and am used to buying it. Was using pink and now I just bought "marine blue" that I'm going to use for my next GT appointment. I want to also start using makeup for my GT and my first local MTF support group meeting.

I did find this site that has some useful info after I made my original post.

Starting out with makeup can be fun, but a little daunting :). In addition to what everyone else has told you, my best advice for you is to take your time and go slow. Pick a day where you'll just be hanging around the house, then just have at it. My second-best tip: Less is more :). No worries though, you'll learn as you go.

Now, try your best not to poke yourself in the eye with your mascara brush, or get foundation in your eyebrows or up your nose like I do

If you have a GG friend that you are out to or it is safe to come out to, she can be of tremendous assistance as well.

Susan.....

Learning makeup is like anything else....

Part technique...part skill...part quality of your tools....

And 110% practice!

Like mentioned above....get some and get going.....make sure to have "remover" on hand....

Go for it, Hon....

Ok, I've just started transitioning and need a little help getting my order in to buy makeup online. Anyone have a list of must haves? Halloween is coming up and I think it will be a nice way to come out to my best friend. I have only seriously messed around with the basics like eyes and lips. Haven't gotten the foundation and contouring thing down yet, although I have been quite impressed with my work when I had the goods to work with (thanks mom! shhhh....)

Also, if anyone has a good idea to figure out skin tone and choosing shades I'd be ecstatic! I got some makeup apps but you can't really go by a photo taken on your back porch at midnight with a couple in me (drinks)!

I've got a method I use and it seems to work fairly well. The other day I had a moment of zen when I femed up and I saw a woman looking back at me in the mirror.

First off, I obsesses about my skin. I wash my face routinely, use exfoliants and mud masks regualrly. I lotion my face several times a day and have lotion on as a base under makeup. My skintone has leveled out nicely and I don't bother with foundation most times.

I use some concealer sticks on the beard and stache area then a powder foundation product over that and on a few problem areas. A bit of blush, a darker lipstick minimizing the lips and then I spend the most time on eyes. I probably have a dozen differant eyeshadow kits and I experiment with them until I get the look I like. Eyebrow pencils and mascara are very useful too. I like a thick brow faded into the darker shadow on the lid.

Now mind you I am over 40 and I noticed most women that age around here don't bother with foundation, mostly the younger set are using it regularly. You should look at how women your age are doing their make up so you don't look out of place.

You can order makeup online from Marykay or Sephora. You can also get a prepaid visa debit card if you don't want your infromation out there.

My girlfriend recommends bh cosmetics. I checked their website and their prices are really good. They have palettes with tons of colors and you can create custom palettes when you know which ones you like and the refills are like a dollar or two. I started using a primer and also use it on my lips to "erase" them and top them off with lip gloss for a nude lip look. Love it because it draws attention to my eyes. I'm up HERE, boys!

Oh, I noticed that the Revlon primer seems to suck the moisture out of my lips, but mineral eyeshadow dries out the lids and primer shields them from that. I just make sure that I use plenty of Blistex Lip Medix after.

@LittleSam I dress pretty stereotypically masculine too, it's comfy! But sometimes I feel like being fancy and bright like a peacock so I do that. Being a peacock is fun :D  Plus I always think it's so weird that people believe certain genders can't do certain things, because why does it matter so long as no one is being hurt and the person doing the activity is happy? Basically, I think worrying about that stuff just causes a lot of unnecessary stress.  I don't really see myself as genderfluid mostly because my gender is pretty static, or I'm always masculine and not at the same time all the time. With that being said I can absolutely see how it relates! Especially since I think it makes perfect sense to go between feeling gendered or genderless, to put it broadly.  Overall, labels are our best attempts at describing hard to explain concepts like gender and sexuality, which are both really fluid and vary a lot from person to person. I went from trans man, to trans masculine, to agender, and back to trans man, so I essentially just went in a circle, but I learned a lot along to way.

I personally don't understand how wearing panties is comfortable for much of anybody.  I'm AFAB, but there's just too much naturally, um...down there....for panties to be comfortable.  Consequences of being intersex, I guess.  I'd suggests some slightly-looser shorts instead.  There are some that are marketed to women, but have a kind of androgynous look to them.  Wish I knew a brand name, but I could ask my friends.  Both of my trans friends are non-op, so they have no doubt experienced how you're feeling.   Ugh... I get really irritable when GF keeps trying to put me back in female underwear because she says I "look pretty" that way.  I never thought I looked pretty that way or any other way, and the pinching/pulling/chafing combined with the overly-noticeable outlines of....stuff.... just makes it no-go for me.  Last time she approached me with an underwear item, I warned her she was going to get bit.
    • awkward-yet-sweet
I don't think so.  People may disagree with me, but I don't believe there's such a thing as "gay culture," "trans culture," "White culture," "Hispanic culture," or similar terms because those are really big umbrellas.    My background is Greek, and I live in the Mid-South part of the USA.  I share some of my trans-ness with my trans friends, and some aspects of our backgrounds and beliefs are similar.  But honestly, its impossible for me and the average trans person from California to agree on much of anything past the color of an orange and the fact that we don't quite fit in our bodies.

Just heard from surgeon. Surgery successful and she's awake and resting well. Spleen was large about only about 100ml blood loss, probably all from bleeding into the mass & not from any rupturing. Dr didn't see anything else worrying except a liver nodule which she biopsied although she suspects the nodule is just age-related. She's anemic but they're holding off on blood transfusion for now bc they believe she'll recover naturally. About a week to get biopsy report. And Dr said if she continues to do as well as she has so far, she may be able to come home tomorrow. So best news possible so far. ❤️🙏❤️🙏❤️

Well she did choose me in the end not him. Just frustrated that it was so hard to get her to do that.
