A Double Honoring....

Yesterday I was invited to attend the graduation of one of my coworkers who was being awarded her masters degree. My company had hired her two years ago right after she had earned her bachelors degree---something we don't normally do but she was an exceptional woman. You see she is a Native American woman who was born into abject poverty. She was raised in and out of foster homes and had her first baby at 15. But she became the first person in her family to graduate from high school. In the two years since she was hired she just blossomed! I was invited by two female Native coworkers to do a woman's honoring ceremony for her prior to her graduation. It was very moving and we all teared up. The words I spoke were that we were honoring her as a daughter who made our hearts sing with pride and joy. We all teared up again when she walked up on the stage to accept her diploma carrying the beautiful Pendleton blanket we had given her draped across her arm. The day was all about her of course, but when I got home I realized that being invited to participate in a Native women's ceremony was also about recognizing my natal female spirit by my coworkers.

Hugs, Ricka
