Cold Turkey

So I quit smoking this morning. Just as before when I quit drinking beer (and smoking pot, for that matter), I'm going cold turkey. I was planning on using Chantix, but was advised to try otherwise.

Wish me luck!

Good luck Belle! ^.^ I'm sure it'll work out great for you! I quit smoking cigarettes over a year ago, cold turkey and it went fine. Then again, I have asthma so I shouldn't have been smoking anyway and it really IS a disgusting habit and I was only doing it out of boredom, so I guess it was easy for me, hehe. Alcohol would be easy as well, because I don't drink much and I don't really enjoy the taste anyway. But I do enjoy Marijuana, and it is almost legal here, so x3 that would be harder to quit, but I'll definitely do it for HRT! ^.^ (when that time comes)

Good for you, Belle!

That's what I did, too, when I quit...

I wadded up the pack and never bought another!

Stay strong, Honey...you can do it!

Good idea. I'm going to the store and getting some gum. Then I'll take a break from Laura's and go walking.

OK. OK. I can do this. It's so hard, though!

Keep it up Belle. I quit smoking years ago and know what you are going through. The nerves are starving for nicotine. The addiction will start going away. Know that physically you notice you are feeling better almost right away, even though you are fighting the addiction. Maybe chew some gum to get the nicotine taste out of your mouth.

You can do it.

Belle,

All the best to you. I have been struggling to quit for several months now. I have days without any and other days with more than a few.

Good needed topic, with first hand experience on Chantix.

One word of caution:If you have depression,or prone to it,

use only half the doseage daily.

Chantix works. The urge is there, but very diminished. If you

slip up,so what. The drug gives you that edge to make it over

the hump and become a non smoker.I Know...Forty Seven Days

without buying a pack of...(bad ones).I'm starting to feel

like a non smoker.Think,"I can do this". Smell for the first

time in years just how bad burning cigarettes and ash tray's

smell, not to mention myself and all my belongings...

So,I would try Chantix.Give yourself that extra edge to make

it over the hump, and much luck to you for the effort you are

undertaking.Just remember,if you slip up,it's no biggie,keep on

keeping on,and you will make it.

Here's an update.

So things were going OK at first with the quitting smoking, but my soon-to-be ex-wife still lives with me and is smoking around me all the time. That has made it so hard for me to quit. And, on one day, she and her best friend came over and had like a girls' night with me. They brought alcohol and I decided to partake, because I was dying to have a girls' night with people that were supportive of me.

I don't consider the alcohol a relapse or anything, because I don't think I really had a problem with drinking. I do believe that quitting drinking is a positive in my life, but I think I'm just a young American and that's why I drank. Anyway, though, I smoked the whole night.

I hate cigarettes. Right now, I'm talking to my wife about diff living arrangements, because I NEED to quit smoking and I CAN'T do it with a smoker in the house!

Proud of you hun, but if you were a moderate to heavy smoker, like half a pack a day or more, doctors don't actually recommend you quit cold turkey. It's up to you of course, but it's best to wean yourself off nicotine via the patch. Either way, good luck with it :) I'm planning to quit too over the next month or so. I'm cutting back first, then I'll go on the patch for a few weeks and see how it goes.

G'luck! I know how hard it is, having two smokers as parents... probably why I never started! Just think of the motivators: More money to spend on clothes, and your body will thank you and give you much nicer skin as a reward. What's not to love?

More money to spend on clothes

And what better motivator is there than that? :P

Yes. I would try different living arrangements. That would probably help you more than anything else, not having anything in your life to encourage you to relapse.

Or it you two are stuck together (perhaps for financial reasons right now at least) she could try quitting or at least not smoking anywhere near you until you are able to live separate.

I tried that route. She wouldn't work with me.

Oh, well. She's out of the house now.

I gave up ten years ago using patches. Haven't had a cigarette since. I'd tried going cold turkey quite a few times, never lasted more than a month. Turned out I wasn't. Some excuse/crisis/drinking session would always come up to dissolve my resolve. The first time I used patches it didn't work either because I didn't use them long enough- it seemed so easy I thought I'd be OK after only a few weeks. Next time I followed the instructions on the packet and kept using them for a few months. I've been so much healthier since!

How are you doing?

Indeed! When you quit smoking, you need to broadcast it everyday to help it sink in. As someone who quit cold turkey 10 years ago, I know what a hurdle it is to get over. You need all the love and support you can get in this fight. My friends formed a betting pool as to when I'd break down and smoke. I bet them that after the last bet on day had gone by, I would still be nicotine free. I won! Drink lots of water. Eat sugar free mints whenever the urge strikes you to smoke. Take all the money you would have spent on cigarettes and put it in a jar. At the end of the month, go buy yourself something amazing.

Well, here's an update:

I've been struggling. My wife has been in and out of our apartment and she's a smoker. The other day, I went to my parents' house (btw, talked to my dad! will post a topic on it!) and they are all smokers. I keep requitting.

I keep thinking I've got it under control and I keep losing control.

I need to go out and buy a bunch of mints and some popsicle sticks so I can make kool-aid popsicles!(thx for the idea DJ)

I'm quitting AGAIN today. Wish me luck, because I really, really need it!

Belle, Honey....

Look in the isle in the supermarket that has the KoolAid and you should find some small Tupperware trays for making popcicles in..

Mine were a four pop tray for $1.49 so I bought 3! They have their own "sticks" in them...

Then use pre sweetened...made with nutra sweet or a sweetner like that...5 calories a pop...

I can sit on the computer and eat 12 popcicles...and it's about as many calories as an apple!

Good luck, Baby!

ow about those electronic cigarettes? Expensive at first I hear but no more than smoking.

I've been looking at them for my daughter. She started at 16-never got another penny allowance as long as she smoked either. She gave it up 2 years ago at 31 cold turkey but relapsed a few months ago. She has blood pressure spikes and every member of her father's family that has smoked has died of cancer.

So I am very scared for her but if I mention it we fight. And fight

Keep up the good work

Hello SouthernBelle,

Very pretty name. I agree with Katie T. what's not to love, by quitting. I went Cold-Turkey over twenty years ago. You can expect strength to come back that you forgot about. Food and drink will taste better down the road. and before you know it your body, very soon, wont even crave for it.

There nothing but benefits darling :D .

Hugs and support, Sannara

I'm still screwing up. I will hopefully be cleared for HRT in 3 months and I've been told that you need to be done with cigarettes for several months before you begin HRT.

What do I do? Do I get the patch? I don't want to postpone HRT for even a second...

HELP!

I started estrogen (oral) a little before age 50 and not the maximum dose either and also no blockers. It almost immediately accentuated the feminine features I already had, and expanded my already soft areas of skin, widened my hips and distributed more fat to my thighs and increased my breast size. There seem to be some subtle changes to my face too though I doubt I am any more passable than I was a decade ago, it’s just nice to not use breast forms anymore. I haven’t switched to injections as planned and there really hasn’t been much change after the first 6 months and my body fights back; my E levels dropped and T increased even on the same dose so it has not really done much for me. It sounds like injections are the far better way to go, plus progesterone after a while if the doctor will prescribe that.    As is often said, everyone is unique and one’s mileage may vary, and what works for one person may not for another.

This is so sad. The violence in general in Washington State seems to have ramped up a lot, and gender-based violence and hate crimes seem to be worse as well. My parents once lived in Renton but I don’t care for that city and never go there. I don’t think it really matters though as crimes like this can happen anywhere and often are perpetrated by a male who was in a prior relationship with the victim.

I’ve never been in therapy specifically labeled as such, butI think IFS therapy evolved from treatment of dissociative identity disorder in which one’s various alters or parts are treated as an internal family, and each part is like a separate individual who can be spoken to individually or have dialogue with other parts. In a person with full DID, doing that supposedly helps to break down the dissociative barriers that cause that person to not be able to remember what they did for parts of a day or longer. This was the case with me.   Anyone’s mind, though, can be thought of as being compartmentalized to some extent and we all can have an inner child and various aspects of our selves, yet the dissociation is never to a degree that it causes problems like with DID. But the same aspects of working with an internal family or different aspects of self, like the inner child, the rebellious teen, the persecutor parental type, etc, can help heal trauma nonetheless. I think many of us do have sides of us that we don’t like, or others don’t like, and it can be useful to examine how they came about and what purpose they serve as they are often a means of self-protection or coping with anxiety.

We had soup and steamed rice for dinner tonight.  Simple, basic, feed-a-ton-of-people kind of food.  With strawberries for dessert!  We have a huge strawberry patch, so I spent a couple of hours this afternoon picking.  And there's some left over, which I put in the downstairs kitchenette.  Time for a late night snack!     Outside of meals, I mostly live by nibbling on fruit and a few green things.

Well, it is officially summer.  85 degrees outside the last two days, and GF is sick and irritable.  I have to curl up under heavy blankets in my nest, because she's got the AC turned down to the point I expect to see icicles growing on the ceiling.  This is what life is like when your partner is an arctic creature. I should be used to it by now, but just when I think its nice and warm, she has to freeze me.

Been using the wok on the back deck a lot the last few months.  Just got another stock of udon noodles from Amazon and we are using those in the stir fry with onions, peppers and a spicy peanut sauce.  I did this often in the 90's too, but back then I was just using a standard Coleman camp stove instead of this high BTU wok burner.  I've had the burner for a couple years, but haven't been using it regularly until recently.

Tangent, adjacent, opposite...  It's still rock n' roll to me.  I don't know about the "in god we trust" part of the money, but I like the lady with the scale.  And then I look left at the Indian statue on my mantel of Guanyin feeding a drop of liquid to the dragon at her feet.  In god we trust?  The lady with the scale?  Maybe this is too binary.  And then on the other side of Guanyin is that kind of pelican wood bird that sits two feet tall that I hauled back from South America through the Panama canal.  The beak broke in 1998 and I carefully saved the pieces (as I usually do) and attached them back about a decade ago.  I used a drill to make a small hole and then put a finish nail in there.  Then a hole on those two pieces that needed to be attached.  Upper and Lower beak.  There is still a seam showing.  I could cover that up, but the beak is a bright yellow and well, it's better with all the pieces in place and I don't mind seeing the crack.  I guess that is the tangent and the other two are the opposite and adjacent. -money  Why don't coders always code the "-" action in their search fields?  It's not that difficult!

Definitely points to learn and keep in mind.  A bunch of stuff I had put in mental "cold storage" thawed out a bit there and ready again to run through my mill.  As said, a bit long and as usual from her a tad bit challenging.  Overall I see it and can use it as a working hypothesis.
