I'm going on vacation in a few weeks and I need shorts. I'd like to buy girl shorts that look like almost like guy shorts and not overly girly. im not out to most of the people on the trip.

Its easy - just avoid those with back pockets that are too decorated. Women's shorts also tend to have an elastic band which is nice.

I never wore shorts as a male bodied person...

Now I wear them all summer...

I love the jean shorts...many tend to flare a bit below the waist and give you more of some "hips"...

But, they still pass as "male" ....

I too would like to buy some girl shorts that are not too obvious. All the ones I have looked at are really obvious that they are girl shorts. Is there a certain brand that maybe is more neutral?

Okay - I buy women's 18W shorts at Catherine's a big woman's store. I also have some from JC Penney - Liz and Me brand (I think it is the casual division of Liz Claiborne). They don't look obvious if they are blue denim. This time of year they are usually on sale - look in the clearence racks.

Karen,

There is a lot to chose from out there. I have worn women's shorts (and pants) all day and everywhere for many years with no problem, and long before I even considered going FT. The styles now are much closer to male.

Watch the inseams! Just don't get short shorts, or as Lizzy said, avoid the embellishments. Watch for slash pockets too, the ones that are diagonal from waist to the top of the thigh, that is a giveaway.

If you prefer ordering from catalogs, look at places like LL Bean, Lands End and Eddie Bauer (all of which often have sales as well). All have women's shorts that are close enough to men's that no one will notice.

Also, I happen to like some of the Columbia and REI womenswear, and both have casual shorts and hiking shorts that are great. Places like Sprts Authority or similar chains usually have a decent selection, and often have sales, even at this time of year. Finally, the Gap (and Gap Outlet, not so much their Old Navy) and Banana Republic SOMETIMES have shorts that are basically female versions of male shorts. The cut is for a woman's hips, the legs are a bit wider, but they look about the same.

in my honest opinion the best women's shorts are jeans that you cut most of the leg off of them but they look better when the jeans are straight slim or skinny fit

Girs, I don wanna change the subject much (my question is still about women's shorts), but I already asked this in the corresponding thread and haven't gotten an answer (been waiting for a week)

I really badly want to buy short-shorts, but Im confused about the way women measurements work.

If I am a 38 waist as a guy, what size of short-shorts will I have to buy?

(it would be my first piece of women clothing I'd own :D

Lady Violette,

Womans clothing sizes are not easily set in stone. They vary from designer to designer. Sometimes I think they just like screwing with us. I am about a 32 and I wear between an 8 - 10 My stab in the dark for you is a 10-12 maybe.

Best of luck. try them on first and make sure they fit. Especially if you are looking at some that are fairly androgynous looking.

This is a maddening issue for women, natal or otherwise. Because sizing varies by maker, almost all women's clothing lines offer a sizing guide in inches. It's usually available on line with the listing for the item. So if you are looking at shorts from a national chain, their website usually has a link to the sizing for that particular manufacturer. You can also go to the maker's site in some cases. I often will shop on line first and then go to the shop to buy it.

As for 38 in waist, that probably is in the 16 range for most manufacturers, but don't forget that also are shaped for hips and all. But you can always exchange an item. There is a wikipedia entry for sizing, but what they list is not what I have experienced as a shopper over the years. TBH, many makers have followed "vanity" sizing, and what used to be a 14, may be a 10, so you think you can fit into a smaller size. I'm afraid there is some trial and error, and you will find you have no choice but to return items unless you are willing to try then on in the shops -- which for most is not an option really.
