I don't know, but why go on hrt if you still want to be a "working" male? I guess I don't understand.

Melanie Dawn

ps AFTER hrt? it never ends.

Well Oogie,

You have posed a complex question, and I think the complexity is really for yourself.

HRT will result in you having little testosterone relative to estrogen. This means that your ability to achieve penile erections will eventually stop. If you still want to maintain penile erections, I would reconsider your pursuit of HRT.

You seem conflicted, and that is the very reason why you should see a gender therapist. These, and more issues can be sorted out with you.

Gender identity is complicated and how one expresses their sexuality is complicated.

HRT and Viagra is a mixed message.

Think about what you are doing.

I meant after I start HRT. And just because I would like to maintain an erection does not make me any less of a transwoman.

Sexual functioning and sexual desire does not make anyone less of anything :)

This is territory that must be discussed personally with one's gender therapist.

Each one of us here have a completely different point of view as to why HRT is important and how we see ourselves sexually.

There is no judgement here, but I caution those who I feel seem unsure about things.

Transitioning is not a trivial thing. You must all be aware that transitiong means very profound changes to your body, and consequently, your sexuality. This is not to be confused with your sexual preference. No, I mean your sexuality in terms of function. This and and many more things need to be sorted out by talking to a gender therapist.

There does come a point in one's transitioning where there is no going back. You MUST be sure!!! Therapy will help you to be sure.

I may be wrong and oogie can correct me if (I'm sorry I don't know your preferred pronoun, oogie, so I'm using gender neutral) ze meant something else. I think oogie wants one kind of equipment (and still functioning) down stairs, but upstairs having female parts on the next level up shining on high beam.

And no, I can't answer your question. I am just focused too much on how I want to turn my outy  into an inny to think about errections. But good luck. :)

Well, I'll have to jump in here....

When you're on HRT...most find that the "equipment" shrinks...

You become infertile over time...

And most lose their drive to have sex...

to take Viagra while on HRT is possible, I guess...I wouldn't even think of doing it without consulting a doctor, though!

Dee Jay said what I was going to say and that is consult a doctor first. It might not be safe for you take it after being on HRT for a while.

I am almost 4 months in and let me tell you there isn't much going on down there anymore.

I hope you get the answer you are looking for but I don't think there is much of a chance after being on HRT for a while.

Good Luck

I never said anything of the sort did i? nope.

Just seems unusual to me to want "both" working gear and secondary sex characteristics of a female. As other have said, definitely talk to your doctor and your therapist, I would think that you might not get hormones if you still want to be a functioning male. One might think you aren't sure what you want. I am just thinking out loud, and NOT putting words in your mouth.

Hi Oogie,

Asking that question around here is like dropping a sugar cube down a fireant hill. I think it is because most MTF do not want that equipment at all and dang that thing if it works. I am one of those that buck the system a bit. It is a personal thing and each of us needs to respect that. No harm in your asking the question and no one should be questioning your intents or motives as to why you want to stay active.

I have been married for 25 years in September. I love my wife dearly and she has decided to stay with me. She has asked me to stay active as she still enjoys having the use of it. I dont mind giving a little to get a little. Its all about us not just me.....

So not to sidetrack too much more, but I have been on HRT for 19 months now. Yes it does shrink, and yes it is more difficult to get and stay active. I have tried Cialis, and it adds to some of what I have lost in firmness, but the side effect of the intense banging headaches was kicking my butt. I have thought about Viagra, just not been back to the doc to talk to her. So in theory yes it will help retain some of what you will lose with HRT. Hope that answers your question and not attacks it!

Ok so I just dropped the 10lb sugar cube in the ant hole..... fire away.

This is clearly a sensitive subject. Many of us (myself included) are not comfortable with discussing erections because it is something that we avoid at all costs. Tucking requires the complete lack of erections. I take tucking very seriously.

With that said, each person's sense of self and sexuality is important and worth talking about.

I will say to you all, none of you said anything wrong, and all opinions are appreciated. Let us all remember that all we have are opinions (I know, I expressed mine).

The important thing here is that however you see yourself and how you express yourself, sexually or otherwise is OK :)

The human condition is very complex and sexuality is even more complex. No one is ever to feel ashamed about who they are, gender, or sexually.

All my love

Ok...so not to beat a dead horse too much longer but If we just express our opinion and question the reasons of another without answering their question, but affirming our reason as to why that is a bad idea, then I dont believe you have done anyone any justice. You end up with the opinion that you are the authorative response and why would you even ask that question. May not have been your intention, but when I read through the thread thats exactly what comes across to me. We all do have opinions. sometimes we dont need to express them as they only relate to ourselves. All of us are unique and individual.

Just because we identify a certain way doesnt mean we all are identical. kinda leads into your last point about humans being complex and we should not feel ashamed of who we believe we are.

Just my two cents.... but I think we should all think twice before responding to a post we have no authorative answer to reply with. Sometimes opinions are just not warrented.

Well, one thing no one's mentioned here is that with the loss of Testosterone, also comes the loss of the intense need and desire to get off constantly. I remember my pre-E days where the thought of not being able to get it up was pretty scary.

I have now been on Estrogen and Spiro for 4 years, and Progesterone about 6 months. I think I read somewhere we're not supposed to talk about dosages on here, but compared to a lot of my MTF friends, I take a MASSIVE dose. Crazy thing is, while I've gotten all the amazing female parts HRT promised, I've experienced little shrinkage and still get erections every time. Downside is, I DON'T WANT THEM! I hate that thing for all it's worth, and would be quite capable of an enjoyable sex life if it didn't exist at all.

That said, I'm apparently a very rare case in the fact that it still works, so don't count on anything. My doctor is baffled by it.

To answer your original questions in order - my sex life hasn't changed at all - still nonexistent and no I have never used viagra.

So, I have been no help at all.

there are lots of trans women still using their stuff. I have been on HRT for over two years and mine still works. it takes a little longer but it works. I was in a support group where this subject came up and was shocked at how many women there were still using their stuff. I can say that your O 's are generally much better. Thats what everyone in the group had agreed on. I have no interest in men.

I have, so they do exist.

I know someone who went on HRT in her early teens, never living a day as an adult male, and still has and enjoys a fully functional one.

Personally on an emotional level, I can't stop getting erections soon enough. And shrinkage? I asked for extra George Costanza in my hormones.

(below not directed at quote)

We're all on a very personal journey. And if we're true to ourselves, we don't purposefully try to hurt someone else, and we come out the other side happy, more that likely I will try to support your decision and not judge.

Bernii, I am nearly a year into HRT and although things have shrunk, I can still get an erection though its a bit too small to do much with and there are days when it actually hurts to have one. One thing I have found is that the glans responds more like a clitoris durring sex and OMG has it given some wonderful O's. Viagra and HRT, an odd combo amd probly not a good one;

YMMV: As you progress in HRT and start thinking of yourself as a woman rather than a transwoman its amazing the rewiring tricks the brain can pull.

i have not taken viagra , but know some what how it works , to achieve erections there must be healthy blood flow to the penis, blood flows into it, but dosnt come back out as easy , and that's what viagra does , it blocks a chemical that allows blood to leave the penis ,thus being able to maintain a firmer longer lasting erection .

the problem i see for you though is it will prolly kill your desire for sex long before it kills your ability to become construct. HRT is a long drawn out process . but the first thing it will impact and hard will be your mind and those effects come relatively fast and happen long be for any physical changes happen. the first thing it hits is your sex drive . the male sex drive is most dependant on testosterone and visual stimulation . mostly testosterone. after that's gone and months turn into years. your opinions of sex change your feelings about it and the reason why you want it switch from being how a man thinks about sex to how a woman thinks about sex .

i have been on HRT for 11 years. i started when i was a young teen. my equipment hasn't worked correctly in i don't know how long . i enjoy sex but being 11 years removed from a substantial source of testosteron. i don't have the need to get off. or more correctly its not about getting off . i desire closeness intimacy, and it starts long before im even touched . i have to work up to being turned on . it doesn't just happen, well sometimes it does but its on rare occasion . normally my bf has to do almost everything right all day long to even have a chance at getting what hes after later. my biggest and most important sex organ is between my ears not between my legs .

eh i'm starting to ramble and get off topic . you should ask your doctor and make it perfectly clear to him/her that you plan to start HRT

for the main reason most all T blockers . directly affect your blood pressure by lowering it and viagra affects it by raising it. could be all kinds of drug interactions that could be dangerouse. and also ask your endocrinologist that is prescribing has he/she will prolly have a better idea of what will happen over the average GP

I'm surprised at how many people attacked this person.

I mean, I've been on hormones for three years. I'm 20 now. While I would be rather devastated if I had one of those spontaneous erections; I have no problem using my "thing" during sex. I feel comfortable enough with both my identity and body that if I were to react in a male way during intercourse, I wouldn't mind much. Now, with that said, I'm not going to go out of my way to top a guy (that wouldn't happen anyway though, since I only date straight men). But, if a guy is comfortable enough with my body, and wants to touch, rub, or do other things to this stupid dangling appendage, it would simply not bother me.

Thank you Cris. This was very well stated and something that needed said. We all have the same problem (trans) and there isn't one solution. I am in the same boat as you and was actually very interested how some others here might have made this work. I too am trying to keep my marriage and that is something that my wife happens to like. I have used viagra pre anti-androgen and could manage the headache somewhat by taking it with food.

Well I have been absent recently due to my new hobby of computer gaming. I have worked on a collection of NES, SNES, N64, Sega and now revamping up my PlayStation 1 and 2 collection and then will get Xbox original. My computer isn't powerful enough to run Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 games. It's fun to see the old games that I grew up with.

It's truly bizarre, the changes that have happened over the years. Larger houses on smaller blocks of land which means less trees because there's no room for them, so less shading and the resultant need to run air-con harder, which adds to suburban heat sink, which results in higher local ambient temperatures, which results in increased air-con use. Vicious circle.
    • Ivy
I don't have "air" here, so I pretty much live with what Mother Nature gives me.  Fortunately, there are trees in my yard which helps in the NC summer.  Windows and doors open all summer - closed up in winter. I do have fans, ceiling and windows. When you think about it, everyone used to live this way.

I cannot say that I have. As much as we hope that love, compassion, and therapy help, sometimes opening ourselves up to individuals who later to out to disingenuous, results in worsening of the original trauma. In addition, it may provide a secondary trauma. I have experienced this first hand, and it has left me hardened more than diamond or titanium. There is an emptiness that grabs you when you have been betrayed for innocently opening ourselves up, only to find someone who has went behind your back, and tried to destroy your life.    As for therapy, well, for some of us it works I suppose, until we either run out of money. Insurance is often not useful. There are many "counselors" who will not accept the insurance payments, but will willingly charge much more. When my counselor unilaterally decided to increase charges from 130/session to 180/session, I said enough is enough. I survive, sometimes despite myself. I have paid a fortune out of pocket for everything, and have no illusions about it. If I did not pay what I paid, I would not have received the services including the counseling. Transactional? Yes. I already knew I was transgender. That little gift will exist until my last heartbeat occurs. I will endure because I want to, and because my job/profession benefit others.    It was hard enough coming out later in life. I knew it would be hard. If I had a choice, would I choose to be transgender? No. If I had it to do over again, I would never tell a soul. I would take everything to the grave with me.

Good question, when it comes to love, the trauma from past makes it hard for me to know wither someone really loves me or not. My therapist suggested that I embrace my femininity more, due to my past trauma held me back from doing so and forgive those who mistreated me.

Hi MaeBe, good question about the T fighting back.. things to keep in mind for some of us who are on the E, levels may respond differently which requires a treating doctor to monitor both the T and E levels, there might be other test work to be done as well. I don't know what my T levels are, except I have a hormone imbalance. Oh yeah, I use the oral type of E not the shots, my treating doctor plans for me to use the patch form of E later on.

Good morning everyone,    Just when I think the crate and potty training is going well. Parker has decided that the laundry room is a good place to do his business. He rings the sleigh bells at the back door to go outside to potty, has not made the connection to needing to do his business. He is only 10 weeks old and still very much a young puppy.    On another note the rest of my world is going well, and off schedule. The only way I know what day of the week it is by looking at my phone. @Willowand @awkward-yet-sweet my wife and I keep our house on the cool side holding the thermostat on 69° F year round. We also have ceiling fans moving the air in each room. She even sleeps with an additional isolating fan in her bedroom. I think that one is more about white noise than cooling. I’m glad central Indiana is in a moderate temperature zone allowing us to experience distinctly different seasons.    Hug,   Mindy🌈🐛🏳️‍⚧️🦋

Well I've been surviving at least that is something. Heading to visit the oldest and family tonight. Haven't seen them since before xmas. I just wish they would come visit us. None of them have seen the inside of the new house. We are going on 2 yrs. I know it is an embarrassment for my son to come visit his parents. Until they moved back to WY our 4 yr old granddaughter has never stepped foot into WY.   Since the wife left early for work. The puppy thinks he needs up early too, so up about half hour earlier than normal. Which maybe good as I (and maybe our youngest) am heading to a cars and coffee in Cheyenne this am. Even taking the wagon, which I was able to get the transmission fluid changed yesterday. god what a PITA that was.   Well off to see the wizard shortly. TOTO, where did I leave my gingham dress?   Hugs, Kymmie

Good morning    @awkward-yet-sweet you’d be plenty warm at my den. Wife keeps the temp between 76 and 78.  If I turn on a ceiling fan I get “do you need that fan on?”  I sleep best in a cool room snuggled up.   have a great day. Hot here!  Oh I went all the way in the pool yesterday it was nice.   Willow
