Some of you, are aware of my huge body image problem, I have. As part of my monitoring of my diabetes, I have a monthly weighing. Normally, I am leaving my nurse's office, filled with very negative and harmful thoughts, aimed directly at myself. Today, was a totally different story, in the past 19 days, i have lost 2.5 kg (5.5 lbs), bringing my current weight down to 164.4 lbs (just under 75 kg). Personally, I want to bring it down to 65 kg (143 lbs), but in the past, people have complained to me, I look totally unhealthy, at weight. I know, I need to lost some of my weight, for health reason. Sigh.

How tall are you?

If you are 6' 11" ....then 143 lbs is way to light for you....

but...shorter?

Hi Theresa,

There's a line between being thin and being gaunt. Because the majority have "super-sized" over the last few decades, it seems like people are uncomfortable with someone who's thin. If you can remain thin without being gaunt, then don't worry about what others say. It has to help your diabetes to take off pounds.

It sounds to me like your goal weight is pretty good - I'm at that weight and a bit taller. But I have a slight frame, so you may have to make allowances if you're larger-boned. But stop losing weight if your ribs or cheekbones start sticking out.

You can tell by how you feel when you have gone too far. And now and then our bodies just need a rest from changing so stopping for a bit and then continuing with weight loss will tend to keep you from looking gaunt and feeling better.

I have a real problem with body image myself being unable to recognize anything between fat and thin. Once I'm over a size 10-I'm 5'5" with heavy bones for the most part-I feel fat. And I don't care how fat I am after that. It's just fat. Right now I'm fat. Ugh. But working on it. Being fairly immobile complicates that

it is good that you are aware of your issues and seeking healthy ways to deal with them

      This is not uncommon.  I started out going to the therapist in androgynous clothing: from the women's department, but plausibly masculine.  What made it easier was when I started going to a trans peer support group.  Most of the people there were presenting fully feminine, so I looked out of place in my androgynous clothing.  The peer pressure made it easier to dress in skirts.   I started out changing in a gender-neutral bathroom near the meeting room.  But I soon started wearing skirts in the car to and from the meetings.   Yes, it was nerve-wracking at first, but I soon realized that no one was looking and no one cared.    You can do this.

      In my last session my therapist is starting to suggest that I need to start exploring my gender identity in a more tangible way through wearing feminine clothing at least during sessions.  I'm having a hard time wrapping my head around her seeing me actually en femme.   I love and trust her, but the thought of being visibly feminine is scaring (and thrilling) me.  Is this a common thing in gender therapy?  How do I get past the fear?  More importantly, what should I wear?

      I felt the urge to date and felt just like a teenager again. I have recorded my journal titled Ashley's Life From Start to Present. I was very moody and agitated and happy. I think it was my body's way of being in shock. After about two months it got better. Remember that you aren't the only one transitioning because your wife is too. Consider yourself lucky because I lost mine because of it and so have many others. Just enjoy the ride.
