Hey all!

So I was off to my laser tech yesterday for a higher dose of focused light designed to cause me pain and belated pleasure (pain from being shot like Greedo over and over on the face..pleasure from having less and less dark matter blotching up said face). When she was finishing up, she kind of laughed and said:

"So, is this what you wear when you teach?" I had just come from work.

"uh-huh"

"And people think you look like a man? I don't get it."

She went on to point out the difference in my facial structure and body shape. When I stood up, I tried to put on my best teacher voice and act like I do at school, but part of the problem for me is that when I am getting lasered, I am totally in girl mode and it is REALLY hard for me to think about being a man. It takes the bulk of the drive home for me to re-affect a little of the male persona that my wife still needs.

So I put on what I thought was the male persona (including my "manly" glasses - which are actually kind of gender neutral when I think about it) and she laughed at me and said:

"You look like a woman trying to be a man."

All I can think is that here is someone I have been out to all the time and she has seen me every month and seen the changes and really noticed them for what they are and, most of all, sees me how I want to be seen. I project woman at her so she sees woman (and, being intersexed, she is very open to our community).

So what I am saying is, much as everyone who wants to see me as male studiously avoids all the tell-tale signs of female and focuses on the tell-tale signs of male, it is the opposite for others.

A Rufus Wainwright says, "Oh what a world we live in..."

.

Exactly!

People see what they want/expect to see!

I really don't do much "male mode' anymore...

People that I work with somehow still see him despite the evidence...

Same for you, Gin...

Rufus was right....lol

Reading this really gives me hope for my future and how I project myself to others. Its so interesting how different people see different sides of you and have entirely alternate perceptions. Its awesome to think that people like her can see and appreciate the real you.

People don't generally pay enough attention to other people in the world to know if they could even possibly be trans. They glance and if you have feminine hair and a general feminine appearance they just assume you are female by birth. Someone being transgendered is the furthest thing on most peoples minds.
