i am a crossdresser, i love wearing make-up eye-shadow, nail polish, etc... my problem is; my wife does not. do i buy my own? i live in a town of 20 thousand...can i go into a dollar store and purchase what i need...the thought of it makes me really want to. let me know..alene

I don't know about the town you live in, but I have found out the stores where I shop for my makeup (like Walgrens, Walmart, Kroger) really don't care, as long as they see the color of your money. Self-conscious that I am, I usually pick up what I need while I purchase something else, even though that probably shouldn't worry me. Depending on my mood, I may have an excuse ready like "My wife asked me to pick this up," or I may feel like saying, "It's for me" if pressed. But so far nobody has ever asked.

On monday I took the day off from work and had a wonderful makeover day in preparation for my debut as me. Went to a local spa for a brow treatment, manicure, cut, and style. Then I mustered up my courage, went home, changed into cloths that better fit my new look, and went to Nordstroms, which I assumed would be fairly uncrowded, I was wrong... it was packed! I later found out that there was an anniversary sale going on... Somehow I made it to the make-up counter without throwing up ( a minor miracle)...

I had always been extremely dissatisfied with my own efforts at presentable make-up using discount products, so I was resolved to go to the experts and get some help... I was extremely lucky... the woman behind the counter was amazingly awesome and worked with me for 2 hours and made me look beautiful giving me hope that I can do it! At first I was getting a LOT of stares... by the time she was done, I was getting virtually no attention...

perfect!

the moral of this is:

Expert help in discovering your best colors is far better than years of fiddling with whatever I could get the courage to put in my cart while shopping.

Wow, I wish I could be that strong. Maybe one day....

That would make a perfect job, an esthetician that deals specifically helping TS. There probably is already and I can guarantee nowhere near where I live.

hi alene, how nice to meet you. i am a transwoman so there may be a marked difference in what we want out of appearance but i'll offer this as food for thought. when i've done my makeup right, it doesn't look as if i'm wearing any. i rarely achieve this perfectly but it's always a goal. i'm not sure of exactly how different are our approaches to attention but i live by this simple philosophy: attention = scrutiny. i don't need scrutiny from the masses, it just places unwarranted stress on my self esteem, so i try not to attact any. but, then i do this all day every day, so i can imagine how different the approach is when one is doing it for an occassion.

i have had a lot of luck with some of the cheap stuff from the dollar store, but for most of my foundations i'll stick with the brandnames. covergirl works awfully well for me. avon also makes some very good products and if buying is of some concern, there you just have to deal with one person, and she is definately into sales so her veiw of you is likely to be very green indeed. be comfortable with yourself, that's the best advice i can give. there is nothing wrong with you or what you want to do, lose the shame and guilt. you are a very unique gift from a loving God to His creation. lotsa love and hope, pj

One aspect of modern shopping that I love is the self-check-out at the grocery store - we have a nice upscale Harris Teeter with 4 self-check-out aisles, and I've found it so comfortable to pick up a few items in the makeup aisle (downside = expen$ive at the grocery!) and check myself out so I get no scrutiny whatsoever at the checkout. Being that I am a professional in my day job, I don't want to deal with stares or looks from a grocery clerk if I'm in the store after work buying stockings, lipstick, mascara, etc. I haven't been brave enough to go to the makeup counter at the department store but I'll bet that was a wonderful feeling, and felt so natural - all the best sweetie!

On my recent splurge of make up and clothes, etc. They didn't seem to care. Like someone said they just assume you are buying it for someone else. I actually found the whole experience fun and relaxing.

The cashiers at the stores could care less who is buying what, as long as there is money leaving your hand and going into their register.

And Jenny, for you sweety, you are stronger and braver than you think sweety. Have some faith in you girl. Hell , I do.

If you have a supporting significant other, I don't see any reason why you couldn't go shopping together for your own personal supply of "girly things." She should be able to help you with colors that will go with your natural skin tone.

Have you thought of coming out to your wife?

I came out to mine over a year ago, it wasn't too rosy at first but she has come around.

It is so much better when you have the support of your SO - no more sneaking around and she can help you with your makeup etc.

Some big stores like Kroger have self checkout machines where you can scan your own items.

SharleahLynn is absolutetly correct. I've bought makeup items at Target along with other stuff and the cashier couldn't have

cared less. I also went to the cosmetics section of J.C. Penney, told the staff person I needed a "kit" as a present for my

S/O, and he was very helpful. Whether he guessed the real reason or not, he didn't let on and I didn't care. It was FUN!
