Tomorrow I'm Quitting

So, I tried to quit smoking cold turkey for the first time a couple weeks ago, and I only lasted 22 hrs. before the headaches were too overpowering. But as of tomorrow, I'm trying again with a different approach. I currently smoke 6 cigarettes a day. Tomorrow I will only smoke 5. And I plan on decreasing by one every week until I'm done. I was talking with a friend who quit smoking last year and this was the method that she used. I just hope that I can do it with all of my friends (especially the ones in my LGBTQIA groups) that smoke.

Yes, this will take me over a month to do, but if it gets me to quit, then I'm fine that it'll take a bit longer.

For a long time I smoked 2 cigarettes a day....one one the way to work and one on the way home....

I quit....

You aren't in too deep...like one or two packs a day....

This is the time to stop, before it really gets you by the throat...

Besides, we cannot smoke on HRT...too much chance for stroke....

Now is the time, Hon....

I was never addicted myself-I'm so allergic I got pneumonia every time I smoked when I was young. But I have watched my daughter struggle to quit over the years.

I still have problems when I walk through the smoking crowd outside our TG support group - after 5+ years, it's so tempting!

And after 10 years, in my own experience. I even miss the smell of my Zippo lighter. But I don't miss smelling like a used ashtray and I wouldn't start smoking again for anything.

Wishing you all the luck in the world, Natalie. It's really tough to quit, whether you smoke 6 a day or 20. But it's worth it.

Thanks for the support everyone! It's hard to keep it at 5/day (which is the number I'm allowed for this week). But it's only hard. Not impossible. Coupled with the fact that I actually LIKE smoking (yeah, I know it's expensive and bad, but it feels SOOOOO good) this addiction is a pregnant dog. The only reason I'm able to keep this up is because I know that I need hormones. Hopefully the need for hormones, and knowledge that I won't be able to get them, will keep me from relapsing.

Be firm. Stay focused and know that it is the best thing for you to do. Don't break your word to yourself that this is what you need. I started smoking when I was 15 and smoked 1-2 packs a day until just before I turned 30. I turned 40 this year, so I've been nicotine-free for over a decade now. You need to quit. Remind yourself daily and believe it.

You can do this.
