Transmen With Pcos

I don't know if anybody on here has this or knows about it but I'm really in need of some advice.

I have poly cystic ovarian syndrome, or PCOS. (Yeah I know, like it wasn't bad enough being born with ovaries, I had to have problems with mine, but whatever xP) basically its different for every person. But its a hormone disorder and my problem was that my insulin was too high. Like over ten times too high the normal, healthy rate. So I've been taking Metformin, the diabetic medicine for a couple of months now and that has brought my insulin pretty much back to a normal level. But what I found out is that insulin is directly related to testosterone. And I had a lot of testing done and it ended up showing that I was born with a completely female body, but a male endocrine system. So it turns out I had too much T in my body to begin with, and now it was gone way down because of the meds.

So my question is whether or not taking T will mess with my insulin and if it does, how badly? I've gone to my endocrinologist about it but she is only a pediatrician endo and doesn't have a lot of experience with this particular issue(being trans not PCOS). And it looks like there isn't a doctor that specializes in this under my issuance policy. So I'm caught between two dilemmas, my finial abilities and my need to know whether or not I can take T and how far I can physically transition. There's like a million issues on top of that but I just wanted to see if anyone out there had any general knowledge or experience with this? Anything you could offer would really mean a lot. Even if its just about finding the right endo, please let me know.

I have PCOS and have been on Metformin for many years. Not sure what my T count was prior to starting treatment.I guess I can't really offer any input on your specific situation, other than to say I have seen mentioned that the ratio of trans men with pcos seems to be higher than the ratio of cis women with it, which is interesting. I just wish I remember where I read it so I could offer a source.

Oh btw, I have PCOS, hypothyroidsm, and a prolactinoma, none of which presented a problem in my case, when it came to starting T.

I know someone who has the same problem as you but don't know much about insulin and T levels. In my friend's case, they gave her other medication to regulate her hormone levels (some kind of birth control). I've definitely heard with insulin resistance being an issue with PCOS, but that's all the information I have.

My standard blood work (get it about every 6 months) includes a metabolic panel that gives my fasting glucose level, so maybe there is some relationship between hormone levels and blood sugar. Can you ask your doctor/endocrinologist for more information?

If it helps, my friend was allowed to take T but eventually decided to stop taking it (not for medical reasons, wasn't comfortable with the changes or how fast they were happening).

yeah, I have PCOS. And I've heard that too, about the rate being higher in transmen. I'm not so sure about the insulin thing but I have never heard of it being a contraindication per se...

I am supposed to be on a birth control to help with just the regular balancing of hormones but due to my own personal issues I've opted not to take it. It more for regulating your period and the hormone cycles that go along with it rather then the insulin stuff I deal with. I've asked my endo about it but she is not very knowledgeable on the subject. that's why I'm looking for another specialist so that I can really get all the answers i need...

yeah, that's probably a good idea. And personally, I would be staying away from BC pills too. If anything they feminize you even more and that's the last thing we want. PCOS is usually treated with birth control but in our case, that's kinda pointless if we are looking at starting T anyways, which shuts down the ovaries, which were producing too much T for a biofemale, altogether. It is even sometimes said that a lot of ftm's when starting T experience some of the symptoms associated with PCOS.

But definitely ask about that insulin thing. Sorry I can't help you more lol.

I figured this would be the outcome.  Trial was held in New York.  For anybody who thought a Republican would EVER be found not guilty in that state....I've got some oceanfront property in Kansas.  This was no surprise, and jailing him won't be a surprise either.  This is entirely political, and Trump was "USDA A-Grade Stupid" not to see this way ahead of time.  If he was smart, he should have taken his money and his wife to a nice non-extradition country immediately after the inauguration in 2021.  Its what happens in banana republics when one dictator gets swapped for another.

Nice to meet you @Mwm684 and Welcome! Congratulations on your decision to finally start living as your True Self.  It also took me (and others here too) many years to finally make that same commitment.  I am also happy you have support of your spouse and those around you.  That's very important. I am sure you will feel the positive effects of HRT once you are able to start (it can sometimes take a couple of months to really 'feel it' though).  I think you will find this Forum and Community very beneficial in your Journey.  Wishing you all the best!   Deep breaths ... One step at a time

It's Justice served ... but unfortunately in the Politics of America nowadays justice has also become politicized.  But still Happy with the verdict.

California comes through again..  Proud to be a native.  But even here there is an undertone of intolerance that is both just under the surface or geographically prevalent.  We just need to stay on guard ... and stay Visible.

Welcome @Nonexistent! Glad you're here (I'm a bit late on the welcoming committee, ladies are allowed to be fashionably late right?).   Not presenting as the gender in my head & having others validate that when they misgender me sucks. But a fact I had to face a few months ago & am working on today is I'm a transgender woman, not cis. The chances of me passing all the time every time are slim. Sometimes it happen & feels really good when it does. I appreciate those people who acknowledge my femininity whether they're just being nice, or they see the woman inside.     Everyday now & as often as needed throughout the day I say to myself, "I'm a transgender woman, I didn't make me this way, today I will love & embrace myself just as I am, I will not be ashamed." I find it helps me be comfortable with who I am, just as I am. I'm still working on me, becoming the best transgender woman I can. I'm finding it easier to let go of what others might think.    I'm not sure about Texas I haven't been there since beginning my transition, but I was living in Florida since I began just over three years ago & politically it's not much different. I've been here in RI about a month & I honestly don't see a big difference in how people see, treat, or gender me here to how they did in FL.    I hope you find the wonderful advice, support, & acceptance here as I have.   Hugs! I was fairly surprised that the verdict came so quickly, but I guess the evidence was much more persuasive and overwhelming than we were led to believe.  What's disheartening, but not unexpected, is how fast some "leaders" have rushed to discredit the jury and everyone involved in the process.  The jurors, who spent 5 weeks of their time sitting in that courtroom, deserved better than that.  But those "leaders" I mentioned are just following the lead of their "Fearless Leader" in discrediting everything that doesn't go their way.   Carolyn Marie

Welcome! Glad you're here! So happy for you having your wife's support as well as her family & at work! You might look for a transgender support group or PFLAG in your area. I found them very helpful, especially as I began my social transition & going out into the world.   Hugs! Delcina

Welcome to Tran Pulse, @Mwm684.  It would be helpful, but not required, if you could give us a name of some kind that is less awkward than what we currently have.   Glad to hear that things at home and at work are going well for you.  I hope that continues.  Please let us know how we may be of service.   HUGS   Carolyn Marie

Happy Birthday Charlize! You know having met in person I think you may be stretching the truth a bit just to get senior discounts. I would have to say not more than a day over 29. Thank you for sharing this, our journeys intertwine in such a wonderfully delightful way.   Hugs! Delcina
