I have to hand it to the Veterans Administration at Audie Murphy Hospital

in San Antonio.Even though my Medicare card has Male in bold black letters,

from the time I entered into the system I have been addressed as she,her,

miss,ma'am and by my full name.Only once was I called a male by one of my

surgeons,whom my attending nurse made a point of correcting immediately,

forcing him to correct himself.(you know that gave me a smile)

After I was discharged and had/have almost daily appointments which brings

me into contact with the nurses and doctors who only saw me daily without makeup,

in hospital gowns,hair lank and yucky,with the beginings of a shadow darkening

my face,then to see me daily,hair styled,well dressed,full makeup,brings them to

a stop.The most common remark is,"Wow you look great,you are doing so well."

I take being the face of the transgender community serious,and take pleasure in presenting

myself as a well put together woman.Unless you know I am trans,I am just another woman

patient walking the halls of the VA hospital.But it is the doctors,nurses, and other

professionals whom do know my past that I am the most pleased at their reponse when

they see me.I open eyes to the truth of who we are.That it doesn't matter your birth

sex,the gender of the mind,and the presentation we represent to the world so well,lets

them see the truth of who we are with their own eyes,and it opens hearts and minds.

That is just wonderful of your doctors and nurses to treat you this way. They didn't have to but shows what kind of people they really are. I am glad you have them on your side. I wish you didn't have to find that out though.
