Hi everyone! This has been a serious problem for me for a while, so I have decided to ask you girls (and guys) about it. It's been 6 months since I started hormones; and so far the effects have been subtle but nice nonetheless. About a month ago, I decided it was time to start gaining some weight, since I've read everywhere that your body puts new fat on your hips/thighs/bootay. Starting at 117 and 5'6, I worked my way up (over one month) to 125 pounds, but it seems like all of the fat has gone to my love handles. My waist was 27 1/2 and now it's 29 or 29 1/2 and my hips are 34, but it seems like my butt also got a little fatter. My doctor said that 6 months is not long enough for the fat to be going in female places. He said it normally takes between 1-2 years to see a difference with body fat. Should I allow myself to continue gaining weight, or lose the weight and start over. What's your experience with HRT and body fat?

I think your doctor has it about right, hon. I suggest you check weight/height charts to see what the recommended range is for a woman

of your height, and aim for that. Then you can adjust up or down depending on how you like the results.

As with everything else involving HRT, YMMV, and what is right for me won't be right for you.

My experience is that the longer on hormones the harder it is to maintain weight. After losing muscle mass (thus burning less calories) if diet isnt' adjusted down to lower calories one will start to gain fat.

I think it is best to focus on maintaining a healthy weight. I have known people trying to do what you describe. Seeing their results I can't' say it really did much other than simply gaining weight.

Personally, I think the claims of fat redistibution tend to be over exaggerated. There is some, but most MTF just aren't going to suddenly have wide hips unless they had wide hips to begin with.

Over more than ten years of hearing people make the fat redistribution claim and being able to judge for myself by looking at them(as this was in my therapists support group), it is fairly evident that their belief about redistribution was much more than I could see as an outside observer.

Often the situation wasn't helped as many tended to get clothing in the smallest size that would fit. Often that clothing would compress the hips making their hips look even more narrow.

One thing that seemed to work well for me, was to get to a healthy weight. It doesn't sound like you are overweight, but if one is, losing weight, at some point it is likely one will have a natural waist. Wear the right clothing to accentuate the shape and particular the waist and your set. I personally find going not to the smallest that will fit, but a size larger can add some shape if worn properly.

I've lost weight. I'm 6'0'', and used to float around 155lbs, now more like 152. Everything's always backwards for me, though.

The men in my family have a tendency to bulk up easily, and every time I tried starting an exercise routine, I started to look too muscular and manly for my tastes. Now that my testosterone levels are near non-existent, I've started exercising regularly without fear. I'm stronger and more flexible than I ever was.

I've lost weight, but not where it counts. The little fat I had on my body was on my belly. Even though I'm losing weight, I'm gaining it on my butt. There's no question. But I had no butt to begin with.

I never had much of an appetite. My meals are tiny and I rarely snack, so now I'm taking these weight-gain shakes with most of my meals. I really do want to gain weight, as my bones jutt out everywhere!

As always, everyone's different. No predictions can be made about HRT. And I'm young. Etc.

      Nup. Not an option. You need to keep going and keep us all in the loop, and we need to keep seeing your beautiful smile!   Party, schmarty. I'm 61 and haven't had a birthday party since I was 30. Even that was just a crummy meal at the pub with a few friends who we have since lost contact with. Don't sweat it.

      On behalf of everyone reading your entries here @Sally Stone, THANK YOU for creating such an informative thread. But there is one thing you might have neglected to say at the end, and that is, "And they all lived happily ever after!" ❤️   Reno sounds like a pretty good place to call home. I understand the attraction of living in a place that is not too big but not too small.   I look forward to reading your subsequent posts about specific aspects of your journey.

      Hi and welcome. A few things...   1. You're right, you can't trust your friends w/r/t the question of passing. How would they even know if you pass or not? My sister used to do the same thing, telling me that no-one knew I was trans and that to her I just looked like a cis woman. I still don't know if she was serious or just trying to make me feel good, but I learned to not listen to her on that topic.   2. Buuuut, having said that, I thought I looked good, and I think that is all she was really trying to tell me, that she liked how I looked as a woman. Maybe this is obvious, but I feel it gets overlooked: passing and looking good are not the same thing, not even remotely. Your friends (I presume) are trying to tell you that you look good as you are.   3. Having said all that, I think non-passing transmascs have a harder time than us non-passing transfemmes. All I have to do to get gendered correctly 95% of the time is wear a dress and makeup and only a few seriously ignorant folks and diehard transphobes misgender me. For you, it's much harder to find signifiers powerful enough to send the same message.   So in short, I don't have any answers, except that you're right, it sucks, and I hope the situation improves over time. But passing isn't everything. Maybe you're right, and in a less conservative state it wouldn't happen so often, because you'd have more people like you surrounding you. I know that where I chose to live while transitioning has been a big part of making the process a positive experience. I'd hate to be in Texas atm.

      Thank you, ladies.   At the time I went from euphoric (my normal state) to not euphoric in an instant, and the lingering thought was one of self-doubt, manifesting itself with the unsolved question that maybe I never really felt like I had the soul of a woman, I just thought I did. I know I'm not the only one to ever feel this way. All part of the ride on this roller coaster I guess.   Yep, and yep. Makes sense now.

      @Ladypcnj, I found finding a doctor with a good understanding of "intersex" is quite challenging. My current doctor lectured me about the dangers of the testosterone treatments I underwent as a teenager, yet I had no choice in the matter as it was orchestrated by my parents and a sports doctor (I would have never done it in my own).    Having "extra parts" inside and their first suggestion is to remove them because they "might" become cancerous. I'm sorry, but no one is going to remove my uterus unless there is a clear reason to do so.    Then being referred to a psychiatrist to "treat" my gender dysphoria?   Other than a diagnosis of intersex, I find most doctors today are quite vague in understanding how to treat things. It's not something that need fixing, but rather understanding, and each individual case is special.    I know who and what I am, my current care team fails to grasp that.

I know the pain of misgendering, the best way to feel better is to work on yourself and self-acceptance as we still have the curse of the body not matching the brain and although we can make some physical changes we still have to work with what wee have.   I also agree that you are still young and you have not gone through all the changes yet your body will. So hang in there.

      At 22 your body will still be changing. You say you've been on T for 6 years. Some trans guys say they fully masculinise around the 10 yr mark. I have a cis bro who is soon to be 30. He's changed alot in 5 years, a full beard, deeper voice . Of course hes cis so it's different, but his body was still changing at that age. Sorry for what you're going through. I'm short too at just under 5"2.
