Finding A Cosplay For A Convention

Guest Wonder

Recommended Posts

As you can see i'm figuring out a cosplay outfit for an anime convention next month. Even though i am in my identity transitional period, i get embarressed about myself.

I wanted to cosplay as Lightning from FF from top to bottum, but i'm getting the akward feeling in my brain telling me not to. Anyways since the convention is next month during my birthday, ima use my birthday money to buy the costume. I've collected many info n stuff on what im buying heres the links

Boots

Overall

Hairstyle

I know i might make the situation akward and akwardness will spread when my friends mom drives us to the convention but anyways look at the bright side i'm going to spend 240 dollars worth of birthday money on something i like :P

Anyways tell me if this set is all right i spent 2 days finding the right character and the right parts to buy, Don't hesitate to criticize my decision. Although i'm very worried on what my friend will react like when i tell her i'm going to cosplay as this, even though she knows my identity she might catch the akwardness

Wow you rock! those are some awesome clothes. Big anime/gaming fan here. Maybe i'll pull something like that off one day, that would be sweet. Best of luck with it

I goto an annual otaku convention myself with my friends and siblings, but I've only cosplayed once and only for one day since it requiered facepaint. I was a hollow and my sister was Orihime from Bleach ;p Anyway I think that's awsome! I see so many outfits and many people who crossdress and appear completelly comfortable with it. Or somtimes it's an outfit depicting the opposite gender version of a given character. One girl won the award for best cosplay even though her character was a male. I wish I was further into my transition so I could more comfortably dress in the kinds of outfits I want to, certain anatomy can make that difficult for some costumes ;p but your choice doesn't look like one of those, I think it's great! ;)

When it comes to cosplaying, don't worry too much if it doesn't come out perfect. A lot of people go to cons with halfassed costumes with 0 effort and it shows. Even if you don't look perfect, as long as you put effort into it, it will show. Even more so when it comes to crafted weaponry. You're not a model, you're a fan in a costume. Just remember to try to at least stay in character every now and then. It really makes a difference. I'm actually going to try cosplaying for the first time this year and I'm looking into "crossplay" (calling it that since I'm still physically male and still have 0 idea where I am at in the spectrum). Still fishing for ideas at the moment so I might hi-jack the thread in a bit to fish for some more advice. Especially since the cosplay.com "who do i look like" topic seems to have skipped over me entirely.

I derped and couldn't see an edit button (It's been a while since I've been active on here) so hopefully posting this (since I'm technically hijacking this thread) and double posting is OK.

As I mentioned in my previous post, I'm looking to "crossplay" (places in quotes since I'm using the term based on my physical sex) and I'm still fishing for ideas. Looking for something I can get done before the end of july for Otakon. To the anime and video game savvy, based on these photos, any suggestions for a good character I might be able to fit as?

@Oasis

The "who do i look like" thread at cosplay.com isn't that helpful sometimes P:

First do you have any favorite series?

Otakon is pretty close...are you planning on making this or ordering it?

I think that is an AWESOME cosplay and that there is absolutely nothing for you to be embarrassed about :) You saved up that money fair and square to dress as someone you love in a costume that is totally rad. I say: Go for it!

When I was in Tokyo we ran into this guy who explained to us that he made his whole costume and that he was cosplaying as a girl from a famous anime in Japan (I have no idea which one). He even made the headset (out of wood and wires, if you can imagine) so I totally believe that you can do whatever you put your mind to and whatever makes you happy :)

I think all of the pieces your picked out look fantastic. I'm a cosplayer myself (I've done Beyond Birthday from Death Note and my next task is Yoyo from JSRF) and have been lucky enough to stumble across different websites that offer lovely tips on how to make a convention experience a good one. The material in the costume itself looks nice and doesn't seem glossy. The main concern with cheap fabric is that once you get to the con and have your picture taken, inexpensive materials will make an awful glare in the photos.

Remember to practice posing in front of a mirror as your character. People will ask for photos out of nowhere, so you never want to miss a good photo op. :)

@Monte

I'd have to say that guy is dressed up as a Vocaloid. I'm not big into the whole thing, but if you Google it, you might be able to find which one he was.

      hi vidanjali !! i know exactly what you mean, i do have a few trans and otherwise queer friends nearby me but currently i present as 'cis' for obvious reasons so it's not all that easy for me to reach out and find that kind of community (though i do love my irls!!)   but yeah, i get this weird paranoia that if i come out to too many people it'll end up tracing back to my folks (not everyone knows my family is homophobic and being outed is a big fear of mine)   but im sooo happy to know that that feeling was just dysphoria !! i thought i was going crazy for a minute !!.   thanks so much for welcoming me, and you have a great day too !!

      hi susan!! thats very much how i feel !! i have no issue explaining my gender or educating other people on transness but it feels like im talking to a brick wall of misinformation even if they are well-meaning and accepting people ! but thank you anyways for welcoming me here !!

      This is a fairly long video by Philosophy Tube,  (Abigail Thorne)  Discussing some of Judith Buttler's work and related stuff.   I wasn't sure where to post it, so if there is a better place, move it.

      I have a fantastic therapist. She is so caring she has helped me open up so much. Unfortunately, She is ending her internship. Do to a hiring freeze at the VA she isn't going just go right into a position there.  My Endo is out of the Denver VA hospital. I haven't talked with her in probably 2 yrs. I am  looking to transfer providers and get back to seeing a GYN at the Cheyenne VA.

      Shopping at the mall today and helping out at Torrid I excused myself to the restroom. The manager told me the restroom at JC Penny was much closer (I normally use the family restroom in the food court).   Upon arrival I discovered that JC Penny doesn't have a family restroom, it's either or.   The men's room was occupied with customers, and me going in with large breasts, long hair, and makeup was going to cause a stir, so I opted for the woman's room instead. I was the only one in the woman's room.    Texas state law does state that your must use the restroom that matches your chromosomes, and it's a misdemeanor to not do so, but it seemed to be the best choice (I really needed to go!)

      My avatar is from a T-shirt that I am just dying to buy.  Maybe soon....

      I had some guy grab my butt on the ship.  I don't know how "real" it was, but I did not enjoy that at all.  Also did not enjoy the hazing I saw other people going through.  One person can only do so much to stop that when there are 10 people doing it.

      Here is a legible copy (hopefully):

      I pulled this out of a stack of old military mementos yesterday.  I guess I didn't realize how cool this one was because I did so much of this kind of thing back then.

      This internet video thing is pretty amazing.  I'd call it Zoom, but there are other platforms out there.  I prefer Zoom over Teams because Zoom puts me and everyone else in the same picture.  I like seeing the whole group in one shot.  Teams of course is about having so many people that you can't get them in the shot, or is it?   Just saying that I have never met any of my counselors in person.  Doctors, of course I have and I am lucky there.  They are 3.5 miles from my house as is the main transgender surgery place in town.  I've been doing virtual visits with the medical doctors lately though.  It feels like once I became steady state, they don't need to interact with me physically that much.  I have enjoyed going into their office in my nice clothing.
