Endocinologist Question

My GT has told me he will give me my letter, but he wants me to meet with an endo BEFORE he gives it to me. I searched my area and really didn't know what to look for. They don't advertise HRT experience. Anyway, my GT has told me he knows a few and will give me the names. Great, I'll have the name, but how do I know he will know what to do? What do I tell the Doc? I'm a guy that wants hormones? I can see it now.

Doc: Why are you here today?

Me: To get hormones.

D: What kind of hormones?

M: Girl hormones.

D: Girl hormones?

M: Yes, I need them to be a girl.

D: But your a guy.

M: Not for long.

D: Get out.

M: :-(

This whole process is incredibly hard for me. I like to have some control of "me" and I have none. I'm in this void between control and chaos. So I should just accept that the GT knows what he is doing and go see the endo? What questions should I ask? What should I expect?

And I'm a medical person, I should know this stuff. :-(

Shelly,

Relax a bit, you are getting way ahead of yourself. Your GT will give you a list of endos (if not there is a geographical list here at Laura's http://www.lauras-playground.com/transgender_endocrinologist_list.htm)that have experience in HRT and they will know the terminology so you can tell them that you are there for Male to Female HRT. The endo will probably not ask you much more about that because your GT has the job of confirming that you are gender varient not the endo. The endo is going to be interested in your medical history so they can assess any medicl problems that may influence the HRT regime and determine the correct dosing for you.

The questions I asked before I selected the endo that is supervising my HRT was simple "How much experience do you have with male to female HRT?"

If your gender therapist is giving you the name, presumeably the doc knows about transgender HRT as well as being able to help with any questions about hat you say to set up an appointment.

It's not just endos who can administer hormones. My GP gives me the scripts. Plus she has many trans people who go see her, about 2/3 of them are FtM. If you can find a GP who does this, your insurance might cover your hormone bloodwork. I know mine is covered.

Exactly......

If your GT knows them, they now what it's about....

Ask your GT to fax a short "Introductory" letter to the one you choose...

It's all so simple....ok?

This is why I love this place.

So they will know? That should be a very uncomfortable conversation. But one I guess I will have to have.

Thanks

Shelly, most G.T.'s have local contacts with knowledgeable and willing doctors of all types. My G.T. gave me a choice between a trans doctor at an LGBT clinic, or a gynecologist. She asked me which I would be more comfy seeing.

I really did laugh. The idea of me, in male mode, sitting in a room full of gg women, just made me cringe.

It took me about 3 seconds, after imagining that scenario, to choose the tranwoman doctor. It's worked out great.

So yeah, use the ones on your therapists list. You can;t go wrong.

HUGS
