Laser Hair Removal vs. Electrolysis?

So I don't really understand the difference between laser and electrolysis. Can anybody explain it? I've heard that people get really good, permanent results from electrolysis, but it's soooooooo expensive! By opting for the cheaper laser procedure, would I compromise the quality of the hair removal?

Personal experiences are greatly appreciated. Thanks!

In my opinion, laser works. It has worked well for me. Of course it don't get the red or blonde hairs. Those will have to be taken care of with electro. Thats basically the difference. If you can get laser to blast off all the dark ones and follow up with electro that will probably be the quickest route.

They say laser is for permanent hair reduction. Electro gets all of it.

Electro they use a small needle to insert it into each follicle and zap the hair. Laser is a big beam that can wipe out a lot at a time.

If a electro tech can get 250 hairs an/hr. Say the average face has between 10k and 30k hairs on it. Lets average 15k hairs.

Thats 60 hrs of electro at say 65 an hr. $3900 and you hope they get every one. Some may come back and have to be zapped again. Now lets add a 20% rate of failure on the 15,ooo hairs. So thats 3000 hairs that have to be had again. That comes to 12 more hours of electro. $780 for that. So a grand total of $4680...Thats just an average.

Some peoples face could have 30,ooo hairs. As much as 40,ooo. But since I used the averages it probably makes it a little more realistic. Point is you can see how expensive that COULD be. Not that it will, but the possibility of it being.

Now lets take a look at laser prices. They vary a lot from area to area. Lets take an average of 3,ooo to 5,ooo dollars. Lets say that gets us 85% reduction in hair. So 15,000 again...That leaves 2250 left. (Which depending on the color hair you have may go up or down, the effectiveness of their laser. etc.etc) So 2,250 thats left to electro would cost $585. So if the average cost was 4000 for laser and 585 for electro we end up at $4585 this route and all electro would be $4,680. See the price probably ain't much different.

Problem you run into is finding a good place to do either one. The better they are and equipment the faster the results. Electro is much slower. But the results are 100% permanent. Laser is not approved by the fda and all that to be permanent. They just say a reduction. I assume they say that because it doesn't get the light colored hairs.

Anyway hope I put it in perspective for ya, any questions just ask someone will be along shortly to answer them.

A combination probably works best.

I had my second session of laser yesterday. The first session got rid of a lot of the dark hairs (even I was able to see the difference!) so this second session will likely clean up even more. The plan is for at least eight sessions of laser spaced a month apart. These are interspersed with electrolysis on the grey and white hairs on which the laser doesn't work. I managed to get a good discount on the laser ($150 per session for a total of $1200). The total for electrolysis will be greater as I have a lot of white/grey hair and it will take much longer.

As too the procedures themselves I have found the laser more painful (a short, sharp burning sensation), although as I discovered yesterday the decrease in dark hairs from the first session resulted in a noticable lowering of the pain levels in the second session. The electro is less painful but the pain is more constant over a period of time.

Hope this helps

I've had 65 hours of electrolysis so far and I need about twice that much more to go....

But, my facial hairs are gray/white and Laser won't work on those....

So, I only do Electrolysis....

Even the people that have good laser results usually have to have some Electrolysis to finish up....

Also, Electrolysis is the only permanent hair removal process.....

Don't mean to hijack the thread but I am in the same boat.

I have already visited an electrolysis technician for a consultation I have gotten a picture from her.

All my facial hair is dark so I think I would be a good candidate for laser, but I have only heard that laser is a waste of money as it doesn't last and electrolysis is the only "real" solution.

So far I have (electrolysis):

130 for each 2 hour session

Need a session a week so:

130 x 4 = 520/month

or more accurately:

130 x 52(weeks in a year) = 6760 / year

So basically from what I was told it would be 13.520 for my facial hair removal through electrolysis.

For me as I assume as with many of us girls, cost is quite important as that is just taking away from money I am saving from surgery.

If I have to, I will spend the money, but if there is a cheaper/quicker solution even if it is more painful, I will gladly take it.

Advice?

Unfortunately....Laser is cheaper overall ....

It often needs to be repeated so the cost goes up.....

And, I'm with you.....I'd do it if it hurt more but was cheaper.....But, I don't know of anything.....

I've spent about $3500 so far with about another $7000 to go....So, it's in the ball park that you were quoted...

As long as they don't use some super powered laser that could cut metal to remove my hair I'll probably go the laser route.

Naw.......I'm pretty sure they don't use one that strong.....

I have heard that electrology is the only permanent hair removale, and laser is only permanent hair reduction, but I don't know, there are some very good laser people that swear it's permanent. I think I'm more going over to the laser side of things. Hey I think it might just work as good as they claim it does.

For me, with my former therapist, it was almost more like a frog in a pot slowly coming to a boil - I don't think either of us realized the scope of what we were dealing with until fairly recently. And she helped me find my new practitioner, which was incredibly helpful too <3 It feels very strange and new - I've framed this, whatever this is, as 'being bad at being female' for literal decades, since puberty really, and the idea that maybe it's not my fault, that I've never done anything 'wrong,' is a little overwhelming.

I had fun doing this a few weeks ago.  This is how I got rid of -money:     This music player code of mine is really working out nice.  My music collection is all mp3 files.  I put them on my server and then code things like that to play them and loop them.  And then I coded an app while I was in the mental hospital in 2009 that I use to transcribe my music with.  It's a Windows app and you can browse to an mp3 or use a URL to an mp3.  Once it is in the program, it looks like a normal music software timeline and there are sliders to slow it down and speed it up by octaves, semitones and cents, so you have complete control over what key the music is in.  And you can create loops in it and I added a feature a few years ago where it remembers all the settings so when you open it again, you still have the same loop set with the pitch settings.  I've been putting my favorite recordings in it lately, setting the funkiest loop I can find and then slow it down an octave or more.  Then I play drums to it and piano stuff, or pennywhistle.  I like playing drums on the floor.  Even though I got rid of money and well, I should have done that decades ago, I had a good time the other day hitting my bin of GO stones with my drumstick.   I don't know if I'll get flagged for self promotion here or not.  You know, I'm a musician and I'm just sharing ideas for how to listen to and enjoy learning to play music.  I'm not the only one who has made tools like this.  I'm really geeking out on my roommates drumset.  I learned to play in the 90's, but I haven't had a set since then.  I've been playing 5 gallon plastic water bottles as hand drums for 30 years.  They are relatively inexpensive and common and they sound great.  Very fun to play along to your favorite music.  And if you can slow the music down, it can make it easier to play to for some songs.  As advanced as I get as musician, I still enjoy just meditating on playing some simple pattern over and over.  Lately I've been playing an Emin7 chord going to an Fmaj7 chord on the piano.  It's all white keys.  You just play an E and then skip a key etc...  Every other key for 4 notes and then just move that all up one key for the Fmaj7 chord.  I just like the droning quality of it.

During COVID lockdowns without any place to go, some neighborhood buddies and I would play Life for hours (imagine a bunch of middle aged men playing that game, it was a hoot - all sorts of 'house rules')... anyways, as much as I could get away with it, I would choose a pink peg to represent myself... sometimes even had a female name to go with it... this was before I even really pondered whether or not I was trans ...   I was very determined to do this ... so interesting to look back and see all the threads pointing me to where I am now, though it has come as such a surprise as well...   Easy

Thank you all for the helpful responses... I realize some of HRT is for mental health -- like I said above I really am enjoying the ride so far in that regard!   Guess there is a part of me that wants to have my cake and eat it too. I want to have a nice feminine shape within reason for my age (fat distribution - you can kick in whenever you want!!). Yet, I am still not out to family, so I want it to be subtle enough as I go along that I can cover tracks when necessary ... Not the ideal situation but it is what it is ... maybe when family realizes that this is not making me into a monster, they will come around to some of it. I can hope, right?   More and more, I just want to look in the mirror and see a female body staring back at me ... I want female clothing that I put on to look like it fits me to a T... (and by T, I don't mean testosterone, lol)...    EasyE

Good afternoon M.A.   Welcome to Transgender Pulse Forums, I think you'll find that there are a lot of us who had their first therapist reconsidering our story and recommended us to gender or LGBTQIA specific therapist. I made my first therapist cry after asking me what was my worst experience or memory. She was not prepared for the can of worms I brought to the couch. My second therapist is a gem, she's my age and knows how to work with my thoughts.    My two kids were also involved in the arts programs in school one in theater, the other combined art and modern music.   Best wishes, stay positive, and motivated,    Mindy🌈🐛🏳️‍⚧️🦋

That's very common in internet forums and it is hard not to take it personally sometimes.   You might post "bump" with a smiley face to bring it to the top of the stack, or you might use the @ feature if there are certain people you would really like to have comment on it, and say something like Dear Abby, I would really like your input on this.  Please take a minute and respond.  Thanks!!!
