Freethought

A good school of thought. But to be honest, I kinda cringe at the way it places science and logic above emotion, which is such an important part of being human. If we conducted ourselves only according to science and logic, without letting emotion influence us at all, I think we'd have a rather bland existence.

Emotions are fine for getting the full effect of human life even necessary. But dealing with the physical world they have no effect. Emotions are for living logic is for doing.

Rights and Liberty

Fortunately I live in a country with a bill of rights. However rights always have responsibilities attached. If you have the right to speak freely so does everyone else so the responsibility is to prevent harm. The right to vote is followed by the responsibility to vote. The Government is composed of leaders that the public chooses. Once they are in office for how ever number of years it is the responsibility of the citizens that disagree to write letters and other peaceable ways to let them know but in the end we have the responsibility to obey the laws till they are changed.

Liberty is the freedom to do what we want with out disobeying the laws. We can choose to do something or not without repercussion. We can eat what we like as long as it is not an illegal drug or we can choose to grow and eat or our own creations genetically altered or not. Liberty is both positive and negative in the fact that we can, or maybe we do not want to follow some practice.

Do animals have rights? Not according to the Constitution but there have been laws to stop specific mistreatment. There is also the liberty to give certain animals like dogs more freedom then say a pig but in return dogs accept the responsibility of protecting property and provide other tasks to help humans.

We do have the liberty to express compassion but no one has the right to demand it. This is because in our secular society no belief or religion is put above the physical plan of laws and rights. The liberty to practice your own beliefs stops with the rights of others and the laws.

Now Freethought might not be a philosophy everyone wants to embrace but it is a system which people can live their own happiness in a framework with everyone else.

As for myself I reserve compassion for those I think are deserving of it and do not superficially give it to all.

Kia Ora Lisa,

I guess by the looks of it, I ruffled your feathers somewhat and I truly apologise for doing so...I hope you will accept my humble apology...

I have long stopped burdening myself with resentment towards others...I can't see the point in carrying this uncomfortable, unpleasent burden that's just a catalyst for anger and hatred...

BTW if it's any help... I enjoyed your input and fisty debate...

I did post a thread on books in the general section. I use books as to verify facts because the authors are good writers unlike me and they have references to science and other books and institutions that will prove the facts that I mention. There is a Book called "Freethinkers" a fascinating read.

Kia Ora Lisa,

Re: ‘Freethinkers’

No I haven’t read the book only the excerpts…Which I thought others might also be interested in reading too…

 As of late I haven’t had time to sit down with a good book-too busy with my studies, but I do like reading and like yourself, non fiction, or on the odd occasion fact based fiction…

What are you studying? My past studies were Engineering Sciences, energy, electronics, with minors in Philosophy and Psychology. now a passing fancy is history, world issues, poets, and some new age metaphysics just for fun.

Kia Ora Lisa,

Well nothing as heavy as what you having been studying - it sounds like you are well knowledgable on a number of subjects, I’m not much of a academic as such, just the humble computer skills for employment at my local ‘adult education community centre’, of which I find quite interesting…

However I was a keen student of ‘life experience’ at the 'University of Life' and have a Ph.D. in experience, mind you I still attend university every day sometimes as a student other times as a lecturer…We live and learn! B)

I did have formal training in main frames in the punch card days but now that would be showing my age. The training these days only covers how to use the software.

I'm currently on the ballot for an open US Representative seat in Portland Oregon.  Here are some of the news stories on me:   Rachel Lydia Rand on Ballotpedia: https://ballotpedia.org/Rachel_Rand#Campaign_themes KATU 2 (ABC) Know Your Candidates 2024: Rachel Lydia Rand https://www.katu.com/news/know-your-candidates/rachel-lydia-rand-d-congress-district-3 League of Women Voters Candidate Forum for US Representative https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OOoS39CTEOw KOIN 6 Written Interview | top issues, what's going right https://www.koin.com/news/politics/rachel-rand-on-running-for-district-3-top-issues-whats-going-right/ League of Women Voter's Interview with Rachel Lydia Rand https://youtu.be/V5o9RKE3WVo     This is my third time running for US Rep.  Campaigning is very challenging for me because I only have two family members still alive and I've spent less than 2 weeks with them in my life and I have virtually no social network to start with and I don't belong to any social media sites.  I haven't even been able to post here and on sites like it because of rules about self-promotion.   I'm boldly saying in these videos that I want to be appointed to vice-president in the next 5 years.  My platform is about addressing climate change and everything that comes with it.  Population decline is the number one proposal I have and it is very, very scary and controversial for most people.  The way I see it is that oil is more than a fuel we burn in our cars, it's a substance we pave our roads with.  And it will run out, so at some point in the future, most of these roads are going to go away and we'll have a much harder time distributing food.  I play chromatic pennywhistle and I'm this iconic whistleblower politician saying that we will not be able to support 10 billion people at the end of the century on wind and solar power.  Even solar panels are made with oil and there isn't much difference between a wind turbine and a dam.  If we can build skyscrapers and nuclear power, then you'd think we'd be able to figure out how to make a wind turbine 100 years ago.  It's simply not as efficient.  The numbers I've crunched say that if we have one child for every two women for the next 40 years and then go back to normal replacement rate, we'll get our population down to 2 billion by 2099 which is where the world was at in 1950.  If we don't do that and stay on this current path for the projected 10 billion by 2100, then when oil runs out and climate change raises sea levels and floods coastal cities, humanity is going to be in a very uncivil situation.   I'm sorry that I'm not making a huge issue of transgender rights.  Of course I'm here to support our community.  I'd be highly visible on our national and international scene as a transwoman.  I tend to focus on engineering realities rather than these social issues.  It upsets me that people take engineering for granted.  People tend to just get in their cars and think that there will be some space age technical solution that will make it all OK.   OK, that's my rant for the day :-)  Coffee is on.  4:26am.  The ABC station is interviewing me again in a few hours and people can vote for me today.  Please consider spreading the word.  I'm only one person and it takes an incredible amount of effort to keep my political thinking and platform going.   Sincerely, Rachel Lydia Rand Jazz Musician | Software Engineer

"Exstatic" is an adjective that means feeling great rapture or delight. For example, "His wife gave birth to their first child, and he was ecstatic about it". Synonyms of "ecstatic" include rapturous, entranced, enthusiastic, and frenzied.

Absolutely. Being able to encourage, to help, others is so empowering. I've been helped by so many people over the years, I love being able to pay it forward.

Good morning, everyone!!   A busy day ahead for me - need to cut the grass and then pick up the clippings. The grass grows so quickly this time of year. I cut almost 7 acres so that will take up most of my day. At least I can get some sun on my legs and arms!!   Time for another cup of coffee as I catch up here.   Enjoy this beautiful day we've been given.

I started shaving my legs years ago - I started getting an occasional mild contact rash on my shins. That became my excuse to shave them for both me and my wife. Over time, the rash didn't expand...but my shaving did. Full legs....groin......chest......and finally my arms. Keeping the rash at bay was my excuse until I came out to my wife. Now I typically do a full shave on Sunday mornings. The hair is lighter but I just feel better with it gone - it helps with the dysphoria and dysmorphia. I will also typically do a chest touch-up mid week since I notice the growth more there.   I wish someone would invent a pill that would stop hair growth everywhere except on your head.

Good morning.   im not sure where the time went.  I had a decent nights sleep,  didn’t  tell Alexa to let me sleep another 5 minutes,  I didn’t do anything extra but it’s almost time to leave and I just got here.  Definitely only a one cup morning.    I have the overhead console out of the Ford. It needed some repairs with toothpicks and glue.  Been sitting all night t for the glue to harden. I’m always to impatient with glue but not this time.  I want it to hold. Ok the next owner won’t be able to change the lightbulbs however in my defense, the are led so they will likely still work when the car goes to the salvage yard.   gotta go. Not as much on my plate at work today but it’s always busy.   Willow

Yes, my programmer friends and I think that antivirus software is a virus.  It's constantly searching your system and slowing it down.  If you install your own OS and software on your machine, and you make backups of your personal files, then you can recover from viruses in an hour or two.  My computer is 10+ years old and is working as good as the first day I had it.   As long as my computer is doing what I want it to do, I don't care if someone is spying on my system.
