"Should raise some red flags"

About a week ago my AP Economics teacher brought up a current event.

It was about how there is a movement to add SRS to surgeries and procedures that are covered by medicare (or was it medicaid?) in our state.

First, he called it a more general term, which is just fine- sex-changing surgeries.

Everybody laughs at such a ridiculous notion as changing your sex.

He says something like "Obviously our government has added a lot of semi-questionable things to what is covered, but this one should definitely raise some red flags"

One student- "Is plastic surgery covered by it? Those things are basically the same so if not then they shouldn't add that either"

sigh. My teacher is ultra conservative, but other than that I mostly like him. What people don't seem to realize is that transsexuals don't just wake up one day and say "Hey I think I want to be a woman for the rest of my life! Sounds like fun!"

Given people like this, I seriously wonder how our state passed a vote to legalize gay marriage.

Tread carefully with this professor as hard as it may seem. I have had ultraconservative professors and was not smart enough to keep my mouth shut - I found consistently they were vindictive in grading and school policy protected them. Be careful - that's all. It really could mean the difference between passing and failing the course.

I've had him for 3 years, three different classes, and he encourages open discussion on issues. But I do appreciate the advice!

There are people who still think being gay is a choice, there are even some who think trans people are just gay and all the treatment is just elective.

Its sad but thats is just the way some people are. Some will change their mind if challenged correctly, some will refuse and some wont even listen.

My AP bio teacher mentioned hermaphrodites, his word, be cause we were talking about meiosis and division errors. Well that got some girls talking about the "other" option some sites have for sexual preference. I mentioned asexuality, and they were like "I think they are just being stuck up" and the like. Anyway, even if you do introduce the discussion, some people won't believe you.
