For free? where are the doctors going to get their money? from the government? I didn't know that the purpose of the government was to raise taxes and pay for everyone's bills. The free part sounds nice, but it is unrealistic.

The doctors would be paid from either insurance companies or the government. Every government raises taxes and pays for things that the government deems important. In the ancient world that was for armies and the state religion--such as pyramids for the pharoahs. In recent times that mandate has been expanded to include such things as a space program, highways, basic retirement funds, and health care for the elderly and the disadvantaged. Are we in the TG community not disadvantaged? Our situation (of being TG) was not one of our own choosing. And wandering around through our growing-up years--and often through young adulthood--trying to figure out how to fit in with our peers, IS a very real disadvantage. This country is in the midst of a debate on health insurance. Shouldn't we add our voices to the debate? Plus, many TG people feel forced into the sex trade to pay for the expense of correcting their bodies. If we, as a country, desire to assist these TG people in leaving that dangerous profession--and is much more dangerous for the TG than the general public--we neeed to address this need.

Hi, all.....

Some steps have been taken in this country to level the playing field, but, we have a LONG way to go. Women's rights have come far, but, it is only in the last 30 years and still there is huge differences in male-female pay for the same job. Gay rights such as the marriage bill (prop 8)

is hit and miss at best. We've all talked about TG and TS "Hate" type crimes and the bigotry it involves. Yes, a long way to go for basic human rights. The government can mandate and make laws that help to some degree, but, it is in people's hearts and minds that need to change. It won't be easy or happen overnight, but, it is happening. For instance...20 years ago a black man would never have been elected as president of the USA! Politics aside, it is an awesome milestone and it shows that attitudes and predjudice can change.

I am sitting on a leagel fence myself....my wife and I have been married 29 years. She loves and supports me 100%. We intend on staying together AND staying married. All well and good as long as long as the "M" doesn't change to "F" on my birth certificate. Our marriage would be instantly annulled as it then would be a "same sex" marriage. Catch 22. That just won't do! So, unless something changes before I go all the way, I'm a in very objectionable position.

So, while things ARE moving ahead, there's much to be done yet. If you are concerned as I am for social change, do as I do, write your congress person, senator, newspaper or whoever you can. Encourage them to vote with an open mind and maybe, like turning the Queen Mary around, it CAN be done...it's just not easy or quick.

I still do not think the "free" idea is a good one. How many more taxes do we need? People don't need to pay for everyone's bills. If it's not our fault, is it their fault? No. Why should they have to pay? Insurance companies could pay if they want to.

And yes, Donna Jean, it is really what the people think and what the people want. Who cares about the law. People break it 1000 times a day. Even though a lot of people here act like the whole world hates the LGBT community, most people don't. There is a difference between hating and not supporting.

The catch 22 [ re; remaining married] also applies to the UK GRA…If a married trans woman wants to apply for a new birth certificate they must dissolve their marriage, however they can have legal recognition by having a ‘civil union’ commitment, which is legal in the UK…

Yes, I believe all people in the US should have the same rights, but we mustn't go overboard when defining what is a right and what isn't a right. Free healthcare for everyone would be nice, but unrealistic, and therefore it shouldn't be a right given by the government.

Where do you think insurance companies get the money? It comes from the citizens that pay premiums. What national health care is everyone pays the premiums by taxes or other means. The more they pay out the higher the premiums are.

I would be in favor of such a law. I was lucky and got my drivers license changed to female with my name change but now, thanks to the True Identity Act, you only get an F on your dl after surgery. Seems like we here in the states are going backwards.

April, would you be in favour of such a law? So far you seem quite reluctant to give your opinion on such a matter…Just a reminder of the question… If a gender recognition act/bill like the one in the UK was put forward in the US would you support it?

Bearing in mind there are quite a number of trans-people who through medical, financial reasons can’t have genital surgery or other reasons [example not wanting to have their genitals altered in any way] …

For all you know you could be amongst those who can't…So would you support such a bill? If not why not?

I'm not sure about it. If sex is supposed to refer to your physical components, then if those parts are unchanged, why should your sex be changed? I'm not trying to be the evil one here, but if you haven't had the surgery, physically your sex has not changed. Gender is gender, but here we are talking about sex, not gender right? Birth certificates show your sex if I have that right.
