I went to Church today

Hi everyone,

About 20 years ago, I was a fairly active member of my church. After awhile, I had trouble with the exclusion being preached by so called Christian leaders, like focus on the family. Because of my hidden gender issues, I more or less concluded that I was not welcome in the Christian Church. I suppressed my gender and got on with my life, but, without the church.

Fast forward twenty years. Today I attended Church in slacks & heels (hair and makeup nicely done, thank you). The experience brought me to tears as I thought about how I was made to feel about myself so long ago. Today, my values were validated.

I think we can toss the ugly, separatist and bigoted interpretations of the bible into the trash heap.

The Church I attended was one of the Metropolitan Community Churches. MCC is a worldwide association and they are an LGBT inclusive Church.

Hugs,

Shari

We hold our Louisiana Trans Advocacy meetings at the MCC.in Baton Rouge. We three ladies are members of the CCUU (Community Church Uniterian Universalist) in New Orleans area. We have two sister churches in the same area. We also have about five other mainstream churches (First Grace Methodist and St. Marks Christian come to mind) here in new Orleans that are LGBT friendly,

BUT when a Trans person shows up, it still is a rarity. I think we are a very small minority within a full size LGB minority, worldwide. Interesting - it gives us a chance to teach by example to just be good people and fit in with the world.

Very wonderful to hear, I have had relations with MCC a few years ago and still think highly of them, but for now, my own parish in another church who has watched me transition in their midst over the past 6 months has my attendance. We fully belong in all Christian denominations and have so much to offer to all of them. We have given up very close to what Jesus himself gave up, a life built on the demands and dreams of others in order to be the REAL true lives we were made to have, by a creator who did not make junk, who did make us as expressions of the Creators will and power, and leads us to THE CREATOR's own purpose.

Hi Lizzy and Vicki,

I'm not 100% sure, but I may have been the only Transwoman in attendance. I don't have that trans-radar Thing-a-ma-jig that others seem to have, LOL.

After the service the Pastor hugged me, asked my name and invited me back.

Sharii, I am so glad you had this experience. My church has been the most affirming and wonderful group of people imaginable. They even use the right pronouns all the time. I know it's hard for some of them but they go out of their way to make sure I feel loved and accepted.

They even arranged a scholarship for my granddaughter to a residential camp AD put on a fundraiser dinner for what was not covered by the scholarship. All those people there cooking and working for us and being so kind at the same time.

They also never preach at people-they believe in living their religion. All of them up to and including the minister.

And they are a mainstream church. Methodist actually.

It is an amazing experience and validation and I am so happy for you that you have found it too.

Hugs

Nice post Shari.

I happen to be in a time of life where I am becoming more and more authentic with old friends and new ones. It makes me want to simply be me as part of an accepting community, even though most of my spiritual needs are taken care of through another group, I happen to have a friend who attends MMU locally with his boyfriend. Hmm... Maybe its time to take another chance in life, lol! :)

Hi Johhny,

Thanks. It was a very moving experience for me after all these years.

I'm putting my new life together one piece at a time. I never would have admitted it before now, but for me anyway, A Church-life is an important part of making me whole.

I like that your church members don't preach and instead live their religion. It sounds like they've played an important role in your life.

Hugs,

Shari

It's nice to see we are being accepted more and more into church Shari. I attend a Reconciling United Methodist Church where they welcome LGBT members.

Hi Jenny, Hi Michelle.

This morning I had a choice between having brunch with my friends or going to church. I have no idea why but I decided to go to church. I'm happy with the choice I made.

We are working with the membership on a Relationship Covenant (internal - treatment of each other). I have talked with Rev Jim and we are going to use it to possibly work toward an open church. Right now by default (word of mouth and friendships) we have about 120 members, say 40 of us very very active. Of that Sally, Dee Jay, a transwoman named Charlotte (10 years post op) and I, plus a transgenderist Lyla (will not seek to transition) are attending. We have Charlotte's partner who identifies lesbian. I have no idea if we have any other LGBT and I really don't worry much about it.

But an open church would be an offering to the LGBT community, migratory Latino, Native American, and other people who are often disenfranchised. (All churches in N.O. tend to have African Americans and that is a non issue) We also have a few expatriates including those from Brazil, Honduras, Mexico and Ukraine. So we are pretty diverse already.

I LOVE this church!

Shari, thank you for sharing this. I attend Fort Washington Collegiate Church here in New York. We are forming an LGBTQI ministry which will kick off in June. All the pastors and some of the congregant know that I'm trans. I haven't gone to the church dress because of my wife's feeling. that will change when pride kicks off next month.

I've seen this on a lot of forums tbh. That's how a lot of content ends up on internet archives. You've got loads of bots scanning the site at all times and archiving it. Forums are actually nice (in comparison to social media) in that the guest count gives you a pretty good idea of how actively the site's content is being archived. Basically just don't post anything you don't want archived.

Kids are resiliant with therapy and strong support ;-)    They were all elementary age when their dad died and are teens now, and how they've grown and developed as young people, already, takes my breath away.   I'm working on communicating changes clearly and without shame, which is difficult basically all the time because of feeling guilty over doing gender "wrong" for so long. Working on that myself! <3

Allow me to add that people should think twice about posting pictures of themselves, with the facial recognition software that is out there.  Those in stealth or who are not fully out may discover they are suddenly and unwillingly fully out in ways they wish had not happened.

Funny how when i read the topic name i thought you were asking about the study of plants and animals.  I'm a bit into that as a farmer at va time when a cell phone makes plant  for insect identification easier than it has ever been.    Now on to your topic.  I don't farm in the nude.  I have wondered at whether i would skinny dip as i did as a kid without thought of how my body might affect others.  The effects of hormones makes me different from the average person and perhaps i'm "neither fish nor fowl".  I would certainly depend on who my fellow passengers on that cruise would be.   Hugs,   Charlize

This is also a relatively small forum and it can take a long time, seemingly, for someone to get around to replying to a post.

I am also pretty sure that several of them are folks who are "trans curious".  Sometimes folks who are trying to find their own identity, are attracted to trans folks or who are simply interested in the trans community.   There may also be some who wish to do us harm which is why ......... I've just learned to smile figuring "i'm on candid camera".   I'm sure many of our younger members never experienced that show so my age is showing.   Hugs,   Charlize

Most of those "guests" are web bots from China, Indonesia, France etc. looking us over. They are mostly benign.  All they can see or gain access to are the general forums.  Members should be careful not to post anything that could readily identify themselves such as real names, addresses, phone numbers, etc. They do not have access to our gallery, blogs or private messenger. They seem to haunt all forums. Not just us. I should add that they can make us known across the internet. That's how prospective members find us. Google would be a good example.

I hope he gets what he deserves.

Heck I didn't even know they could go up that high! I just have a four burner and one to keep stuff warm. What kind of pies did you make?

That's all the matters.   Well me and the wife rode to Perkins for breakfast. As we were waiting for our food. Being it is Sunday There are a few gentleman in suits, my guess from church. I think to myself. I hope I never have to wear one of those monkey suits ever again. Now a nice dress maybe.   Hugs,   Kymmie

From time to time I've looked at 'Who Is Online" and I have consistently noticed that members are ALWAYS outnumbered by Guests by a wide margin, sometimes, like a minute ago, by more than a 10:1 margin.  I have never seen that before on an internet forum.  It can be explained partly by the nature of what this is, that it draws the curious and they are certainly welcome to read here, and to join, but it leaves me with a feeling of being in a fishbowl.  I wonder who ARE these people?  Donald Trump, is that you? Biden? Sinwar? Putin?  We can only guess.

So from time to time my brain gets a hold of information and puts it together with other information in weird way that get me thinking. I was reading about a nudes cruise that they are running out if Miami. It got me thinking that a transgendered person who is also a naturalist, has to be one of the most unlucky people alive. How does one manage that and does that ever come up? Not trying to make fun here, just genuinely curious. Things that make you go hmmmm....

No luck there, really. She's getting a signing bonus plus a little extra that I don't think would cover much in the way of the move, but it is something!   Oh my! I am glad to hear you're not passing anymore blood. I hope they figure it out soon! How distressing!   @April Marie @KymmieL @Mirrabooka @Willow @Justine76, thank you for the kind words and thoughts! We told our best friends last night. There were many tears. Now it's all about the work: selling the house (my wife's friend's son said he may want to buy it direct!), a job (a former employee of mine wants to bring me over to his company--and they're based outside of Tacoma!), and moving (just started going through what we don't want bring and donating things). So things have kicked off.   I'm not so sure of the job, it would be good to work with my former employee (he's great) but I fear the culture may not be super welcoming to someone like me--and the guy doesn't know I'm trans in any way. But I'll give it a shot as my authentic self and see what happens!
