I have my first GT appointment on the 16th and am really nervous about it. I don't know what to expect, I just know I plan to be honest with everything that will be asked .... my biggest problem I have is hiding who i really am for the last 20 years I'm afraid that it may be hard for me to open up. Can anyone share their experiences with their first time?

Being nervous is perfectly normal and expected, Chrissy. A good therapist knows this and should put you at ease. They may ask you some questions, but they should also allow you to just say what's on your mind. Every therapist has a different approach. Just remember that they work for you, and if you have concerns or questions, or if you aren't satisfied with the way things are going, be sure and bring it up with them.

I was equally nervous on my first visit, and worried that they would look down on me for coming in male mode. But she was understanding about that. One of the first questions she asked me was, what name should she call me? OMG, telling her my preferred name made me blush terribly, but also made me feel soooo good. She gave me a personality test to take home, and also asked me to write out a brief biography that we talked about at a later session. She is an excellent therapist, and we are friendly and keep in touch to this day.

I wish you luck.

I found it to be very relieving. I really felt a lot better about myself after I left that first appointment.

One thing my GT did was to email me a bunch of essay questions to answer and send back before our first appointment. A lot of them had to do with my background and growing up. This seemed to help "break the ice" on that first meeting.

You have the right idea just to be open and honest with your GT. One of the things I found shortly into the session was I could drop my guard and just be me. Please let us know how it goes.

Most people feel exactly like you do before the appointment and then are immensely relieves to find they actually enjoy it, Therapists are trained to get you to relax and open up. it also helps that they aren't there to judge you just to guide you to what is best for you,

I think you'll find it will be a good experience. Just relax as much as you can and let the expert do thier job and guide you.
