...and then DorkLiz showed up.

This afternoon I woke up still in Caddo Mills TX and after some internet surfing, decided that before I would hit the road, I should probably get a shower while there's hopefully nobody in line waiting for one. So I gathered up my things, figured out what I wanted to wear and went inside. I looked up at the shower monitor screen: Available showers: 0. Ugh. 2 people waiting in line. Ugh. Well, I'm already here, may as well get in line as well so I went up to the cashier and gave her my reward card so she could deduct one of my free showers and I went over to the nearby game room to wait.

While waiting, there was another driver who was playing a table top video game. I didn't pay much attention. A few minutes later, his number was called for a shower so he got up and said to me that he still has a few games left on that machine if I wanted to try it. Hey what the heck, why not, I'll give it a try. The video game was a 4-player PacMan game where you play against up to 4 other people (or the computer) and the winner of each round is whoever can eat the bigger power pellets, which makes all the other enemies turn blue, and then you're able to "gobble them up" and they're out of the game for that round.

...and then DorkLiz showed up.

Years of growing up playing Atari video games, including Ms. PacMan all came flooding back to me. I grabbed that controller like I was back in the 80s and with my lightning quick reflexes managed to move my little PacMan guy all around the board, dodging enemy ghosts, gobbling up power pellets and taking down the mean old computer.

I noticed but didn't really pay much attention to the driver who had left for his shower was back just a minute later (I didn't really look up because I was in...."the zone"). Well he was watching me play and after a few rounds commented "..you're pretty good at this." I smiled and told him I've had practice playing this as a kid growing up. I think he was expecting me to be bad at it but oh no, not when DorkLiz shows up and takes over.

Eventually the game ended and DorkLiz was victorious. That's when I slinked back to my normal humble self and flashed a blushing smile because someone just noticed this prissy high maintenance girl is actually kinda good at video games.

I try not to switch to DorkLiz mode if someone's playing video games and asks me to join in. Some games I'm kinda good at and it would be a big blow to the ego (the guy's, not mine) if people watching just saw some guy lose in a video game to a girl. Sure I could play dumb and be like "omg this is so tough!" but eventually DorkLiz will show up......

Lizzie, I have always said to just be yourself and if DorkLiz is who you feel like when playing video games - just go with the flow.

As for the guys, well sooner or later everybody needs to learn that you cannot be number one all of the time.

Love ya,

Sally

PS Did you ever get around to taking that shower or did the siren song of the video games entrance you?

This is going to sound terribly male of me, which is hilarious, but; chicks who are good at video games are HOT! This is an irrefutable fact. In fact I'm counting on it! Wait until they get a load of me!

Hugs!

I almost had a guy propose to me after I did something really awesome in Grand Theft Auto: Vice City.

Sally: yes I did get my shower, the video game was only 5 rounds so shortly after the game was over, my number was called. :)

You know even when I thought I was in girl mode all those years I always beat the pants off any guy I could at anything I could. I'm a phenomenal natural shot-could beat my police academy trained ex with his 357 magnum within half an hour of learning to shoot a handgun -a passionate and gifted fisherman and not bad at pool and such, Had a lot of first and last dates that way but it just seemed so unnatural to let someone else win just because they were wearing pants.

:D Goes to show the guy or the girl we really are will come out because you already know what I could never learn Lizzy

Glad you had fun and got your shower.

I don't know yet. I'm sure there is going to be a big crowd. I also would have to keep up with the kids and probably won't enjoy myself mostly.

I can understand that. My Keurig is used for hot water mostly and when my mom comes. I mostly use a regular coffee maker. I have had that for 5 years now. I had a Bunn but it didn't last long. I also have a French press and rarely use that. I would love to get a cappuccino maker but that is for later on. Starbucks is getting expensive. My kids favorite thing there is the cake pops. I found out that Walmart Neighborhood Market has them. Typical me getting off topic. lol

Well, welcome M.A. Several of my now grown kids were involved in theater in school.  And one is now a graphic designer.

Wow what a busy day today.  Clearly the summer crowd is coming into town.  Doesn’t hurt that we have a PGA event here.  It is limited to 100 players. But the spectators is where the crowd is.   i alone more than doubled my usual sales.     we keep hearing thunderstorms however they are staying just west of us for now. The storms in western Tennessee right now are supposed to be here in the morning.

Edit: Latest album is called "Drumless". My bad. The name of their tour is Drummer.

My gen z cousin & her gf were visiting the last few days. We are a very, very small contingent of queer members of our family & we stick together. She and her gf introduced me to G Flip. They recently attended a concert and said it was the best concert ever. They were playing G Flip in the car and I was impressed by the vocals, the lyrics, the influences, and the percussion (G is also a drummer). I love a nonbinary vocalist (not that we get to hear so many...yet...) because the freedom from gender performance shines forth. I could hear influences from many styles of music I loved in the 90s, but all blended together in a joyfully percussive way. G Flip is rad! I would post a link to some tracks or an album, but there are explicit lyrics which would go against community rules - you can easily search youtube yourself if you're interested; their latest album is called "Drummer". But here is a picture of G who is serving us gorgeous nonbinary vintage Axl Rose!

Welcome, @MAN8791. I relate to this so much. I'm roughly the same age as you, afab & nonbinary. For decades, I beat myself up for being a "broken" girl/woman. And I tried my darndest for many of those years to perform woman successfully. While outwardly I may have seemed "a success", inwardly the effort and dysphoria caused me so much anxiety, panic, and depression that it eventually became unsustainable. For me, the first step was letting go of identifying as "broken". Next, I allowed myself to be however I am. And very rapidly I felt better - in fact, initially I felt ecstatic. The door was open for me to really learn about self-love and therefore love itself.

Well, the counter space in the kitchenette is pretty Limited. But also cost, and usefulness. I guess she is mostly right, and it isn't really important.

Wasn't sure whether to post this in the "uplifting news" or "news" forum. This bill is pro-LGBTQ+, albeit 30 some odd years too late with 100s of thousands of lives lost throughout the AIDS crisis. The upshot is that ol' Ron has actually done some good for the community. That's really...something...although I doubt he sees it that way. And most importantly, greater access to screening and care will save many lives.   https://ncpa.org/newsroom/qam/2024/05/01/floridas-governor-signs-bill-expand-hiv-care

Both of my parents were raised in WASP-ish families. What was or wasn't appropriate, with an emphasise on superficial appropriateness (conformity) was verbally beaten into me the second I hit puberty.   Which is really sad as I think back, and was bewildering at the time. I remember being really free to be expressive how I wanted to and then once I started puberty, all of that freedom disappeared and I didn't understand, at all.
