VA Directive... Do I qualify and How to get started?

Ok, heres the skinny of my situation...

I was enlisted in Active Duty Army from Oct.2008 to April.2009 as a 35M. I completed my BCT, and went onto AIT, where I was injured during a training exercise and subsequently discharged on an EPTS (Exsisting Prior to Service. It is considered an Honorable but not Medical Discharge). Because the injury was a pinched nerve and nerve damage in my lower back/legs and because I have minor Scoliosis, they insisted that this directly lead to my injury. They were quite emphatic that I could no longer serve with this injury, so I tried and tried to get them to discharge me medically so I could recieve disability if the injury gave me future issues (which it does), but they wouldnt budge and ultimately discharged me as EPTS. I realize now that the Army physicians were merely trying to look out for themselves and not me, but at the time I was hurt, naive, and ready to just be done with the whole ordeal so I gave in and agreed (stupid move, I know).

When I was discharged, they told me to bring my DD-214 to the VA and register, but because I 1) heard the horror stories associated with VA treatment and didnt want to subject myself to it, and 2) felt (and still feel) that there are so many other veterans that need the care much more than I do, and I didnt (dont) want to take away from their care or further tax the already stretched-thin system, I have yet to even set foot in a VA, much less register.

Today for the first time, I learned (by way of this forum...thank you) that as transgender veterans, we are entitled to treatment by the VA and since my GT has yet to find a local Endo that can/will prescribe HRT to me even with her letter (me, having no medical insurance and very limited income), this would be a gigantic help to my situation. Im not sure where to begin, however, or if I even qualify as my time of service was so brief. I also read that the VA Directive expires next month, so I imagine its probably too late, as Im sure it takes many months to get enrolled into the VA system. I feel so stupid for waiting this long and I just need to know if Ive missed my opportunity to take advantage of the Directive or not.

Also, I live in Augusta, GA (a not-so-trans-friendly town), so Im not sure if the local VA would even have the proper resources that would be familiar with all of this.

Any information, advice, or other help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance,

Julie M.<3

Julie, I'm responding to this mainly to keep it on page 1 so more folks will see it. I can't really answer your question, but I do wonder if your information on the directive regarding care for TS vets is accurate. I see no reason why something like that would have an expiration date on it.

As to the bennies, your best bet may be to talk to the intake/eligibility folks at the VA, or groups like the DAV, who are experts on the VA eligibility rules. I used to work for them many moons ago, and those rule books are thicker than the phone book, and 5 times as complicated. I wish you luck.

Carolyn;

That VA Directive does in fact expire Nov. 30th. It has never been voted on and accpeted. However, after the directive expires the adminstration will be abel to reiusse a new directive.

I found this out the other day while doing some online research for a new training presentation about the Transgender Community. Specifically on the requirements for Transgender employees of the Federal Government. The new changes made by the Federal Government to protect its Transgender Employees within the last 4 years.

Julie and Valerie, I've verified that you are correct; the Directive expires 11-30-12. However, the practical effect of that expiration or why it exists isn't clear. As I noted above, I would check with your local VA facility's Patient Advocate, the DAV, or either of these two organizations for more information:

Transgender American Veterans Association www.tavausa.org

Servicemembers Legal Defense Network www.sldn.org

I still tend to doubt that the V.A. would simply end its provision of TG services after agreeing to provide them, and training their staff on them. My guess is that such Directives require annual renewal.

Thank you both for your thorough research, and willingness to help me on this front.

After re-reading the directive and seeing this:

1. PURPOSE: This Veterans Health Administration (VHA) Directive establishes policy regarding the respectful delivery of health care to transgender and intersex Veterans who are enrolled in the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) health care system or are otherwise eligible for VA care.

I have decided to "bite-the-bullet" (so to speak) and just go to the local VA with all my discharge documents tomorrow morning. I know it will be an experience that will test my resolve, but that is what growing is all about.

Now, my question is, what additional documents (if any) should I bring (ie: a letter from my GT, etc) that will help facilitate a speedy admission?

If I encounter issues while there, I will indeed call these numbers (also listed in the Directive):

6. FOLLOW-UP RESPONSIBILITY. The Office of Patient Care Services (10P4) is responsible for the contents of this Directive. Questions related to medical care may be referred to Specialty Care Services (10P4E) at (202) 461-7120. Questions related to mental health care may be referred to the Office of Mental Health Services (10P4M) at (202) 461-7310.

and/or contact the two organizations listed by Carolyn (Thank you).

Well, I had an appointment with my primary care provider in the VA system today and asked about getting put in contact with a gender therapist. They asked a few questions, and put in a consult to actually visit one of the local therapist. So that was actually far easier than I thought it owuld have been.

It's also networking.  Sometimes jobs come along because someone knows someone else - these older people might know someone.  "Hey, Ashley," someone might say,"My nephew is looking for love. He likes tall women. Whatcha think? Can he call you?"   Don't discount their ability to match make.  It is about networking.

He is simply doing to get more votes. He held a Trump for trans during his first run and found out the majority of his voters were against us so he simply followed the crowd.

The sad part is I'm the third oldest member. One is in their 60's and the other is past 70's. I'm even older than the president lol. It's a younger crowd that's for sure. I like to come here to feel young again lol.

Ashley, I think searching for relationships are a lot like searching for jobs, they tend to come along when you aren't actually looking.  Perhaps you could step back from actively searching, at least for a little while, and instead, concentrate on just being out and about as yourself.  Like Mae and Abby have already mentioned, just keep up your volunteering, but don't focus on a need to find someone.  Maybe, just maybe, changing your tactics will result in someone finding you.    I do wish only the best for you, and I hope someone comes along who connects with you.

First off, you can't regret being honest. You may not be changing the relationship, but it sounds like it still exists!   As for meeting people, what about through the volunteering you're doing? Maybe you can do more of that and meet people. Let some relationships grow and if they blossom into something more than friendship, great! If not, you've got more friends!

Hi Giz, welcome. There's so many different ways to be trans and you're so welcome here. I wish you luck in achieving your goal of being more androgynous. There's forums in here that might suit you and your goals. I look forward to hearing more from you. I go by he/they pronouns at the mo.

Hello @JenniferB!  Was kind of in the same boat with this.  I spent massive amounts of energy over several decades to try to control my drinking and drug use.  Because I'm highly disciplined, I was ultimately successful.  I felt I could have gone on with controlled drinking for the rest of my life without problems, but it got to the point where I realized that it wasn't worth all the energy I was putting into it.  At that point I found surrender.  I got a sponsor, attended almost daily meetings for a year, worked the steps to the best of my ability, tried my best to socialize with people even though I am an introvert, I made a mess for myself at the meetings and felt a little rejected.  And then I continued on doing a little service work.   After a few months away from it, I'm in a good spot.  I accidentally ate one of my roommates edibles a couple months ago.  I have only smoked a half ounce of weed in the last 20 years.  After it kicked in, I realized that it was a marijuana high.  Then I noticed something miraculous.  I just told myself that there is nothing I can do about it and then got on with the business of the evening like I normally would.  It was like the high just ended right then and there.   Controlled drinking like I was doing was just very risky behavior and not worth the effort for me.  In any case, I'm very happy that I spent my life fighting it all instead of just giving into it.  I think that whatever you put into something, you eventually get back out.   Meetings are cool.  People generally get equal time to share.  Seeing people who are struggling reminds me of the way I was and why I want to remain sober.  And by being there, I have the potential of helping someone else.  The stuff I don't identify with I just do my best to not let bother me.  And if it gets bad there, I don't have to go back.  I can find another meeting or even just read the literature.  The literature helped me a lot.

Happiness to me is when I reached a turning point in my life, that I stop worrying what others think about me, and start living my life.

Very, very true.  The number of murders committed by strangers in 2022 was only about 10 percent, per the FBI.   Carolyn Marie

Good afternoon everyone,   I often wondered why @April Marie and @Willowgot up so early in spite of being retired. Now that I have my own puppy as a house pet I get it. We haven't had dogs since before my oldest granddaughter was born 22 years ago this September. I've always had working hunting dogs, and it was important they became acclimated to the current weather conditions. While the kennels had large outdoor runways, they also had pet passes into the somewhat temperature controlled garage. Yes, they were allowed in the house but only for short periods of time. Fast forward to present time, and I'm potty training a puppy as well as crate training. The first night Parker Von Schwinegruber, slept from 10:30 until 05:30. Last night we went to bed and 10:30 and he started making noise at 05:00. Since I don't want to test his ability to hold his business, we got up and went outside. He took care of business and we went back to sleep. This time he had a dental chew bar and I filled his water bowl. We cat napped until 08:00 and then got up for the day taking him immediately outside. He took care of business, and we played fetch and tug of war with his now favorite puffball. We came in and I put him back in the crate positioned so he could see me cook breakfast. Did he NO HE WENT TO SLEEP! We ate breakfast, did the dishes, and finished off the pot of coffee I brewed at 08:00. Once he woke up we stared at one another for about 20 minutes, because he seemed content to be in the crate. I got up and we worked on some obedience training as well as getting into and out of the crate with permission. We don't want him to crash the gate or any doors we will be going through.   Hugs,   Mindy🌈🐛🏳️‍⚧️🦋

I have not heard about it here in California, but then again we have events of various sorts going on very often, and not just in the June Pride Month.  We have Trans Fashion Week going on at a hotel complex over in West Los Angeles for the next three nights featuring shows by Trans fashion designers and modeled by Trans and NB people on the runways there.  I missed a chance for some free tickets and while I know and love many of the participants I do not want to pay for the tickets which will be in the $50 to $75 range, and which at those prices are nearly sold out.  (Not to mention $25 valet parking each night at the venue complex.).  There will be actual high end fashion buyers there though and it is an area where we are gaining some good footing.  I also admit that NONE of the fashions are going to be anything at all that would fit my basic personal style but look fine if not crazy on my much younger Trans siblings who will model them. (Ok everyone else keep on @Mirrabooka's topic.)
