hey everyone i have started T on augest 25, 2008

and i will be going on a interview for a job and i will be working with kids do i tell the people im interviewed by and what do i say, i will have my name change either feb or march dont know really and i will be getting a letter for the DMV for the change of gender on my ID and permit but im have the interview friday so im at a lost i did it at another job and it didnt work out so good

and theres me and acting like a goof and u can see a little mushstash lol

Ok, its just a fact that whenever kids are involved people act 60,000 times more cautiously than any other. They get nervous about ANYthing that is a hairs breath outside "the norm" as they see it. For that reason, I say either tell em upfront cuz it'll be much messier if you're on T and start "looking different" OR if you can live with making whatever money you've made till that time, wait it out. On the other side, if they hired you with the mohawk maybe they aren't so uptight? I've been finding that a lot of "old ways" in jobs are a lot different lately. I went to the mall not too long ago and the salesperson -a very masculine lesbian maybe? or maybe even ftm, who knows actually- had on a short sleeved Tshirt with tattoos -large ones- up both arms. "In my time" (which really isn't all that long ago, lets say the 90's?) you would never have seen that (at least where I live) it was "unacceptable". Male, female, it didn't matter. NO one was allowed to show tattoos during working. I know many an overheated male coworker in the height of the warm season who suffered endlessly because of not being able to wear a short sleeved shirt due to tatts. So times have changed some places. You have to weigh it out.

This is only my opinion.

I'd be up front with them and tell them at the beginning. A potential employer would (I would expect) respect this a lot more than if you were not up front and they would find out later. I know when I had to talk to my director and then later to everyone, I choose to talk to everyone before I started T. Now I didn't change jobs either.

Back in my time too, things were not so relaxed. So let that work for you.

At the end of the day your medical situation is nobody's business if it doesn't effect your work, which being transsexual doesn't. And when people do find out about it because of a name change, or you looking different then they can't fire you or treat you any differently because that would be discrimination and you could sue them for that. The only people who are stopped from working with children are people with criminal backgrounds. Be strong, and remember the word "discrimination" I find it a very useful word when you go out into the working world. Remind people of it often! x

      April, Thank you for the shout out. It is difficult. Sometimes I wish I was just like everyone else (whatever that is). I haven't figured out how to present it to the kids (not sure I'm ready, or want to). I'd imagine  everyone on this forum has felt this at one time or another.

      Thank You, I tried to balance the rooms decor with equal feminine, artsy, and a bit of 90's grunge/alternative influence.  Unfortunately, the camera I used didn't show the drawings well. I may decide to make a separate thread for the drawings/arts/crafts.   Hugs

      When one signs up to and posts onto an online space, it's usually to the agreement of a set of terms and conditions. Basically, you're already signing yourself off to these rules, so you can't get upset if you did legitimately break the space's rules and got your post deleted/hidden/etc. Whether people abuse their power in being admins in some spaces and stretch the rules to seem like something is disobeying them in some way when, in reality, they just disagree with the post... well, that's another story. Freedom of Speech is only to say that the government can't restrict what you say, not ye average citizen, so online platforms completely have the right to remove or censor posts in that regard. The morality of that is pretty often under question, but it technically doesn't interfere with Freedom of Speech since online spaces are run by the public and not the government. Moderation of posts is essentially the same as if you put a whiteboard outside your house and said people could write messages on, you saw a message you found offensive that someone wrote, and then you erased it.
