April 23rd is St Georges Day...yes the patron saint of England might be a good be quieter than his noisy Irish cousin but I for one always take the time to celebrate our day with a traditional English toast with a traditional English drink (a large single malt)...I was thinking of qouting a poem by Thomas Hardy....and had thought of qouting a couple of verses of Jerusalem but personally I dont think his feet did walk in Englands pastures green cos there is no mention of trenchfoot, swamp fever or frostbite in the New Testiment....so I am going for a anonymous scribe who I believe may have originated in my beloved Pennine Hills....

I went down to Margate, which for those who dont know England is on the kent coast, yesterday, one of the lst sunny days this year so far, roof down on the car, being the nearest Sunday to St Georges (& Shakespeares) day, all the local kids were out in their scout/cadet troupes, was good to see, had a super English lunch (well you got to being St Georges day), so roast beef and yorkshire pudding, with a naughty chocolate tart for afters. We went to the new Turner gallery and walked along the sea front, good day...............

Glad you had a good day Jaques but why is it always the South that gets the good weather.......they were going on about the great weather they are having in the South on the radio too....waxing lyrical about going to the beach etc..........well all I can say Jaques is try that up here in the Pennines hun..you,ll be in intensive care with frostbite before you can say " I think my nose just fell off ".......not that I,m jealous mind

....Well Emma, my surname is Alston, my family come from the town of Alston in Northumberland, a very sparsley populated (mostly farmers and sheep), cold place way up north near the scottish borders, beautiful but give me the sunshine any day - i grew up mainly in Manchester, again way up north, so I appreciate the more sunny weather - having said that, yesterday was a mildly sunny day, not hot, i spent several hrs painting my garden walls and it wasnt until the evening that i realised i had mild sun stroke - my hair is thinning and the sun had got to the back of my neck as i was leaning over the walls, so now I have sore skin - which wasnt so bad, since the missus has been rubbing cream in, so theres always the upside..................i do the second coat today, its very misty now and frost threatened for the weekend - ive just planted salad!!!

You might understand why I get slightly annoyed then Jaques...when people from the South keep asking if I,m making the most of the great weather and we have (it seems) permanent Tundra.....would,nt change places with you though...cos when and if I get some decent weather this to me is the best place on the planet .....I,ve been trying to start salad crops indoors cos its too cold out....but its not even warm or sunny enough for that to have worked very well

Weve had may day on lst with all the dancing in the dawn on west hill, nr the castle in hastings, pagans and all, its Jack in the green this week, al kinds of events, a rites of spring thing, culminating on monday with a procession of thousands of people, morris dancers, drumming bands etc, all ending up at the castle grounds for a concert and picnic, then the slaying of the Jack where they tear all the leaves off him - if you get one, you keep it all year for good luck - well thats the theory, but a very enjoyable day.

Sounds interesting Jaques I love tradition and our old festivals....however anything involving Morris men in these parts seems to involve them consuming vast quantities of alcohol

I was wondering if any would mention Mayday. Its like Haloween a crosdressing feast! I understand not common at most public festivals. Unless you count the Morris Dancers with skirts. Though places like Conrnwall and Scotland and the North Counties enjoy getting as traditional as they can. Hobby Horses and all that. Soho and such are the places to be.

Hastings is best known for its Giant Festival. Theses are 20 foot tall puppets that date back to ancient times. i have a mate in London who is part of a giant group and that is the event of the year.

Um, does anyone know the formula for C-F? I'm in the US and I tend to use SAE measurements so I was just wondering what temperature 22 C was in F.

Its 72 Mara a good bit more than my 54.....ya know the US is prolly the the only place on the planet still using Fahrenheiht...personally..I was sorry we stopped using it...it always seemed warmer
