I own a good bit of true 80's to early 90's clothing myself. I so love many of the styles from that era. And it is so nice to see so many of the styles from that era coming back into the stores again..

I'm looking for an authentic Victorian era ball gown my self, but they are hard to find. All I ever see is cheap low class gown knockoffs, and none of them look authentic.

Hi all,

Is it me? but then again I see kindred Em also likes the 50's styles I think it was referred to as the 'New Look'.

I have just watched an episode of Miss Marple and drooled over the dress the central heroine wore basically white with a 'Lacey design pattern in broad bands strapless torso hugging down to the waist and then flaired out in pleats to just above the top of the calf, complete with the proper petticoats and the shoes.... sorry I've got a weakness for shoes! the hat and jacket! oh my... envy, envy!.

Does any of you kindred out there remember a comedienne called Joyce Grenfell? she specialised in monologues and she used to wear those sort of very full dresses and I always remember her in a beautiful dark green dress at the time (very young I was by the way!) I thought she was an angel and how I would love to grow up to be like her and wear such lovely clothes. Probably a thing best not said in an unguarded moment to Daddy! Daddy by the way wanted a blokey bloke doing macho stuff and what he got was deep sensitive thoughtful me! ah well..... pity fashions change tho..... what goes around comes around so maybe.... one day ...... that look will return then you lot better stand clear ...... Michelle will have lost time to make up for!!!! though during the 70's My actual best decade for 'passing' - I believe that's the term - is long gone would have been better, but no matter any time now would be good! just look for a decrepit old f art in an absolutely fabulous green dress!!!!!!!

Hi Mara,

I used to have several genuine day and evening dresses in pure silk; authentic early Victorian, one in peach and another in gold and one in if I remember correctly a sort of emerald green.

Had the bonnets to match and of course the hoops and petticoats etc. They were part of the theatrical clothing our group had and I'd come by them via the King's Theatre Edinburgh, they had had them given from some old lady's estate. Unfortunately as often happens when one loans stuff out, they came back ruined - they let the silk get damp and didn't dry it out properly and they rotted .... I wept! they were too small for me to actually wear fully but a girl can dream can't she?!! Still got a genuine Victorian night dress in white Indian cotton and lace trims and a beautiful black velvet cape and bonnet to match with a muff (sort of furry roll one kept hanging round neck to put one's hands in to keep warm) and no you can't!

codicil to my last:

Of course one does not wear a black velvet cape and matching bonnet and muff with a Victorian nightgown ... well not in public anyhow!

.... and no I don't!

I do know who Joyce Grenfell is Michelle and I know exactly which dark green dress to which you refer..now Joyce was a wonderful lady..but you could hardly describe her as a beauty..but she had to my mind a wonderful taste in dresses..and that one in particular was a stunner and it epitamises exactly my personal taste...I just love the dresses from that era...I dont spend my Saturdays watching old Cary Grant films on BBC2 for the plots dontchaknow.....sorry Mara dont get the Victorian look myself, which is odd cos my Mother was obsessed..thats obsessed with crinolene ladies..perhaps thats why

Ah, Joyce Grenfell may not have been a pretty woman but she had that ability to be beautiful if one pays attention to some of her photo's one can see the shine from within. Of course as the man said tho ... it is in the eye of the beholder. Gosh I feel a new topic coming on! mmmmm.

Mind you I think most of what my little young mind saw was mainly the dress! and the sunshine from her smile!

A few months ago I started looking for 80's lingerie after running across some looking for normal modern stuff. I really want to start up a collection of 80's stuff as well as from the 20's-50's....sooo many classics with such good taste..

Talking of Victorian clothes, I love the older full dresses myself. I recently bought a cheap 'ball gown' from Cherlone via E-Bay. OK, it's a cheap modern string-together but at £30 can I complain that I have a magnificent satin blue gown that fits beautifully and falls to the floor in a voluminous wide skirts? I can't. I love it! There is also another UK E-bay seller that sells satin Victorian 'Governess' blouses that cover arms, and right up to the neck, including the neck, and have lace collars and cuffs. I have two of her creations. The assembly is cheap and cheerful but you would not know it to see them on.

So, OK. What I've bought is 'cheap rubbish', but I don't get the chance to wear them often so they won't get worn out quickly. And they look magnificent on! Even if a seam is a bit rough, lace a bit scratchy, they look the part and give me a real boost to see them on! I do like Victorian dresses - they make me feel like a true lady.

I loved the white tights that were in fashion in the 80's. I had a couple of pairs myself that I wore with a pair of high heels.

I love the fashions in 1940's Hollywood films. Oh how I would love to look like a gal in those films with lovely long hair.

The net has definitely been a huge benefit to our community !! We can shop with no worries and have it shipped to our door. Though going out shopping is much more fun, web shopping is far safer for many in our position.

April, that is def good advice. I have had some really bad experiences with a therapist in the past. She way violated my trust. That caused a massive amount of damage to every corner of my life. Truthfully, because of that i have alot of deep seeded trust issues. I'm not sure i could ever go back to therapy. You are of coarse right, therapy would help, suppose its a matter of finding the right one and learning how to trust again.

I look for purses with a shoulder strop that goes across the body. I also like many pockets. But one purse is not enough. I like purses that are artistic and make a statement about my personality. It doesn't have to be flamboyant, but matches my character. I also need a purse when I want to blend in and not be noticed so easily. One that won't draw attention to me when I don't desire it.

What if a social media platform giant, (we all know its name) on devices we own, is held responsible for creating rules to intentionally target our community? for political reasons?

Well just got back back from a visit to our oldest and family. It was nice having my granddaughter snuggle up to me on the couch. Gave me a big hug when we went over yesterday. Spent all day yesterday with them.  I envy my granddaughter, being able to grow up a girl. Something I wish I got to do.    Hugs, Kymmie

I hope our members from the Mid-South are doing OK today.  A lot of places had a real disaster overnight.  Tornadoes dropped all over, through Texas, Oklahoma, Missouri, Arkansas, and Tennessee.  Lots of damage, and many people missing.  Pray for those involved, and that there won't be another wave of it tonight.   My county was spared almost all of it, but a neighboring county was hit hard.  Our Defense personnel were mobilized this morning to assist with access control, because all their local LEOs are needed for search and rescue.  No idea of how many are injured and missing, but there have been several deaths.  We may not know for weeks.  Rural areas here have a lot of shacks and trailer houses, and most people were asleep because it hit at the worst time - early morning on a Sunday during a holiday weekend.  Tornado hit a retirement home, and lots of elderly folks were hurt bad.  There was no forecast for this, and little if any warning.      Electrical outage is widespread, and it has been followed by a really hot, humid day.  Heat index is around 115 - it's killer heat.  I went out with my husband this morning, since everybody with a CDL was needed for a convoy.  I'm back home now, since I only got a couple of hours of sleep last night.  He'll probably be there overnight, and GF is there also helping with mechanical issues.  They've converted a big Baptist church into a community shelter for people who have lost their homes, and set up a generator and AC.  I'll probably go back tomorrow to help some more, as they're working on setting up a kitchen...nobody wants to eat MRE's forever.    They're getting no help from the state at all yet.  Governor didn't bother to declare an emergency until this afternoon!   The National Guard hasn't been activated either.  If it wasn't for Defense personnel, there'd be gawkers and looters. Its ridiculous, like only the cities matter.  Two rural towns literally no longer exist - its like a bulldozer a half-mile wide went through.  I've seen tornado damage before, but this is the worst.  Its just heartbreaking to look at it.
