There’s a new study out from the Netherlands examining the prevalence of breast cancer in transgender people. Gooren et al found that trans women and trans men who have had hormone therapy may be at the same level of risk for breast cancer as cis men.

That's really amazing. I do hope that their study stands the test of time, because it does put us in a much smaller risk category, roughly 30 to 50 times less risk than a cis-woman, and only slightly higher than a cis-male would have.

I have yet to have that first mammogram, and have been thinking that I'm due. I'm not sure whether to trust the study - will probably go ahead with the mammo anyway.

Thank you for the info, Liz!

Love, Megan

This is one of those studies that's kinda like many PCs. Almost obsolete when it hits the streets.

Studying people for 20 years is great, but it won't account for the advances in HRT and the younger transitioners who have their puberty stalled. Does anyone believe these girls will have the same risk of breast cancer as gender typical males?

Aside from that, I ain't buying what it's selling in a few spots. According to this study, a MtF should be treated under the 'Male breast cancer guidelines'. So ask your docs how often they recommend the guys get mammograms next time they try to sched you.

I posted about my breast cancer screening last April. Scary but turned out fine! As far as my health plan is concerned, for that type of stuff I am in the computer as being post menopausal female which is basically true. I will have the computer send me a notice when the next Mgram is due if I live that long. It is nice to know we are now able to be studied for the scope of this test period. Somebody gives a damn about us!!

I have had 5 Mammograms already even though my sex is still listed as "M" on my insurance card, in addition to physical breast exam yearly.

I was also taught how to do self breast exams monthly.

Slightly discomforting, but very comforting to know that I have no problems.

My medical plan has been very good about my medical care.

Hugs,

Carla
