Troubled Belgian Transman Euthanized

This story has been carried in several online news outlets. I don't know for certain how much of it is accurate. If true, it is a horrible thing, and I can't believe a modern Western society tolerates this kind of euthanasia. The story has already been picked up by some conservative news outlets and bloggers as "proof" that we are all deranged. :(

A full reading of the article shows that this is basically an assisted suicide that is legally available in Belgium regardless of straight, gay or trans*.

I look at this as one more suicide, which the TG community suffers from frequently.

The problem here was that an M.D. and informed consent took a wrong turn. The practice is across the board though, and not limited to TG people. What's another suicide in our statistical population though? There was an ease of availability of the suicide assistance, but where was the same ease of getting psychiatric and social service help?

I wonder if this person was really transsexual in the first place. In the story he says was mistreated by his family because he was not a boy. Was he doing this for their acceptance? In any case this is a very sad story and those who oppose us will have a field day with it.

Yep, basically assisted suicide. While I don't agree in that, it is better than the inference that he was euthanized involuntarily for simply being trans.

Situations like this raise questions about legitimacy of treatment. Severe issues/regrets post-transition, post-surgery is not as rare as many in the community would like to believe.

It is entirely possible that this person wasn't a transsexual, but who is to decide? Maybe he was, but needed other aspects of treatment more.

Did this person have sufficient therapy? Was he screened properly? Did he have reasonable expectations or made the decisions to do all this based on some fantasy and wishful thinking.

I've noted a strong de-emphasis on therapy, more do it yourself transitions and more focus on transition rather than all the potential less extreme options, so it doesn't surprise me if there is an upward trajectory in bad outcomes compared to outcomes in the past which established gender role transition and surgeries as effective treatments.

The mother called the child ugly, was disappointed in having a girl and was not upset with the news of the death.

If this individual IDed as male, and a therapist questioned if perhaps they had issues with seeking acceptance from a disturbed mother, many in the community would say the therapist is out of line.

Anyway you look at it, it's a sad story.

Sadly this is also a cautionary tale about raising expectations among FTMs concerning surgery as well. I agree the therapist should have caught it or made sure he was prepared for the potential reaction. Nor do I agree with assisted suicide because someone is unhappy. Terminal illness with physical suffering yes-I have watched too many people die a slow and ugly death with no dignity left not to support that-but this type of suicide is altogether different.

Not that suicide is unusual among transmen. Some stats I have seen estimate as high as 80% by age 40. But impossible to know for sure. If he had not had legal means the results may still have been the same and hopefully some dialog about the pain and difficulties we face will also come from it rather than about our instability. I do know that with the changes in society that should be changing - especially with prospects on the horizon for dramatically improved surgical options for us. And we can learn to adjust to our realities and have good lives in time. It didn't have to be this way. Should not have been.

The system failed here because it allowed someone with mental rather than physical pain to chose a premature and final solution and the therapist as well as the surgeon failed to weed out a poor candidate for surgery. The realities of surgeries for us mean scars in every case. Mean probable complications and results many would find less than satisfactory and it is important that anyone who is contemplating surgery know that. If they then need to proceed then that is fine but obviously this poor guy was not prepared for the realities or was desperate enough to ignore them for what he wanted to hear and believe.

May he find the peace he sought though I do not support his action

Here's a response from a transwoman. I know that the old mantra is that we have to be responsible, that we have to not let others define us, but for many of us, having that support network, especially early on when coming to terms with our GID, whether we transition or not, is critical.

Nathan did not have that sort of support, especially from his mother. That's truly sad.

I too have trouble with the idea of assisted suicide for people with potentially solvable problems, but OTOH, if somebody isn't allowed an assisted suicide there is still 100% availability for suicide of the unassisted variety, which unfortunately too many trans people reach for in all countries.

Sad story no matter which way you cut it. Shame on the opportunists who use this as a way to not only "prove" that we're nuts but also create false links with "European socialism", etc.

I'm fairly conservative, but very libertarian, but people assume that being trans means I'm automatically some sort of left-wing nutjob who worships Chairman Mao and sacrifices babies or something. Pretty insulting, really, to assume that as a trans person I have no individuality :(

At 22 your body will still be changing. You say you've been on T for 6 years. Some trans guys say they fully masculinise around the 10 yr mark. I have a cis bro who is soon to be 30. He's changed alot in 5 years, a full beard, deeper voice . Of course hes cis so it's different, but his body was still changing at that age. Sorry for what you're going through. I'm short too at just under 5"2.

Dump that doctor!   A doctor is a HIRED SERVICE PROFESSIONAL.  No more "holy" than a mechanic, a plumber, or anybody else in the trades.  Just like anybody else you hire, if they have a bad attitude or do crap quality work, get rid of them ASAP.  It amazes me how in the USA we don't have clear prices related to medical services, and how people will put up with crap from a doctor that they wouldn't from anybody else.  And it seems that doctors give bad service at approximately the same rate as other tradespeople.  Good help is hard to find!   Your body is more important than your car or your bathtub. Don't be afraid to assert yourself.

I can't do that for myself...my partners do that for me. I guess I'm damaged goods.  I think part of me never totally grew up, because I'm not able to do adulting on my own.  There's no "wise parent" part of me because I didn't get here on my own.    I was stuck in my parents' house until GF rescued me.  Before age 26, my parents made all my decisions.  After age 26, I maybe decide some things, but mostly GF or my husband take care of it.  I need my partners around to remember even the basic stuff, like sleeping and eating at reasonable times.  Solo, I'm totally lost.

Now that I think about it, part of why I enjoy my noisy family so much is because I don't have to have much of an inner life.  I don't really like being left to my own thoughts....all that mess in my brain.  Maybe better to have an active outer life than an inner one?

Sometimes we are faced with situations where the only response possible is grief.  Things will never be as we want them; people die, we lose things we cherish, we do not obtain what we earnestly desire.  I see some of those situations here; there are tools available to help you through the grieving process.  It's not easy.

I would be happy to just have 4 disabilities. I take 27 different medications and it does little. I tried working when I got out of the military but couldn't maintain one. I have a lot of mental disorders myself. It would be neat to learn about each other's background. I do understand just wanting to be normal. My job is a stay-at-home parent which is exactly tougher than a regular job especially being a single parent.

Rich as in happy? Far from it. I'm happy about my kids but I shouldn't put all my happiness on them. I take care of myself and do the best I can. I'm happy and content that I have a house and car but nothing that can't be taken away from me like in an instant. I completely lack motivation and don't even want to do my walks anymore. I can't get a membership somewhere because I have kids that are mostly with me. I put myself out there for hoping something to come up and be good, but it's has always been like getting hit in the back of the head.

Oh I'm wearing a blessed girl t shirt and blue capris. Nothing special today. It was just doing nothing day and feel guilty about it.

Hi, I don't think I have enough posts to PM yet I don't think (I think it's 5?). I'm poor myself since I can't work, but my parents are luckily helping me get surgery covered by insurance since I am still on their insurance and they have flexible spending each year. I live far away from them, halfway across the country, but I'm glad I have their support.   On the day to day... having a disability sucks. I wish I could just work like everyone else and have a normal life, but my mental disorders prevent me from doing most things.   I'm glad someone else understands at least.

Very pretty y'all. 4" heels is the max I can handle and not for long period of time. I don't see how women wear 5" and above. I love my feet. I sure don't want to punish them.

Well just been doing a lot of self reflection and a lot of gender dysphoria that has caused me to break down. The realization has been that I'm a trial period for men and women don't even consider me. It's getting dim. I have put myself out there by force even when I didn't want to. I have one friend but still haven't seen her IRL yet. We talk on Sundays and it's always me that starts it. Another person only talks to me when they want something. It's never been hey how are you doing. It's almost a month to my birthday and it's all just my mom, sister, nephew that are coming. So much for a 40th birthday party. I hate these posts. I want to be optimistic, positive and cheerful but I haven't seen anything go my way. I'm making it by the skin of my teeth. I wished I could just go into a coma for a year or just not wake up.
