Hope

When all around is dark

and I listen for small sounds

there is only stillness

yet I listen and I hope.

Sight can not penetrate the darkness

sound falls short before my ears

I lay in the dark and cry

I lie very still and pray and hope.

When will this darkness end

and bring the light so that I may see

that I am not so all alone

I can only wait and hope.

As darkness fades the light has come

and slowly I rise to face the day

afraid to find that in the light I’m still alone

and yet even so still I hope.

The stark light of day brings with it sounds

the sounds of people working and laughing

the sounds of birds singing

no one speaks to me but still I hope.

The world seems cold as darkness nears

another night with all its fears

the biggest fear of being alone

the forever fear and still I hope.

There is more to life than fear

and pain is not the only feeling

somewhere there is love

and above it all is hope.

hope is a bother when in the middle of a good despair

you're right there's always hope

sometimes even hope is painful though

but it's still hope...

Why are our blackest thoughts in the darkest hours of the night - I mean - why aren't we asleep and in the hands of the dream makers?

And Sally - I know you feel so all alone sometimes - but we DO think of you and worry and love you - and you do write so well... and my goodness sweetheart... oh my goodness

because there is a property in darkness that cannot ever discounted. and that is darkness will always take what is right in front of us, and then hide it from our eyes.

think about it. when you are in your bedroom at night, and it is dark, your dresser, your closet door, your nightstand, your pictures, and everything else in your room is still there. but since you cannot see it, you begin to feel uneasy. we rely heavily on perception, and to not have any visual perception tends to throw us off balance. why do you think so many horror movies take place at night?

(and for the record, i am very much a little girl when it comes to sleeping in a dark room at night. i either have a night light or soft music in the background when i go to bed. without those two, i shiver and shudder under the covers. same thing goes for thunderstorms...)

but there is something that this poem reminded me of even more. and that is... even though we may not see or hear something in the darkness, it doesn't mean that it isn't there. and when it comes to hope, that is always the case! we may not see it or feel it, but do not automatically assume it isn't there. we just haven't found it yet!
