Prom Help?

Okay, so most of my friends know that I am trans, whether they believe me or not.

Our Prom is in March, I believe.

Well, obviously I don't want a dress. I haven't worn one since 8th grade (I am a junior in high school, now).

My problem is that I really want to wear a suit, minus the pants of a suit because I don't look good in them.

I was thinking my black skinnies, a white button up, a tie and my suit jacket that I have. I mean, guys still wear skinnies, too, so what's the problem with that? haha.

But I'm just not sure if that would be taking it too far in my school and that I should suck it up and wear a dress or what?

My guy friend is demanding I wear a dress and my friends that are girls say that I shouldn't care what others think and I should wear a suit like I want.

I don't know what to do. *shrug*

Any suggestions?

First off, I want to punch.....I mean...uh...lets change subject about that guy you're have troubles with. :banghead:

I would wear a suit. If I had the chance to wear one to mine I would have but my parents didn't allow it and they had the money.

don't go.

Okay, sorry, that was my answer before reading anything....

Alright, now that I've read it... whatever you do, don't "suck it up" and wear a dress. That's not going to help you at all and isn't going to make it a good night. Do what you want to with the pants or actually suck it up and wear suit pants. But don't wear a dress. If wearing what you want to is taking it too far at your school, then I wouldn't go.

I wouldn't wear skinnies with a suit. If you're going to wear suit, wear the whole thing: slacks and jacket. Skinnies won't look dressed up. But besides that, wear what you want.

Wear what you want. I lucked out in that I got to go to two proms in highschool, my own and my friend's. Mine I wore a dress to because I didn't have the testicles to be seen as a girl in a tux, but my friend's I wore a tux to and remember it better than my own prom. I'm sure no one would have cared if I did wear a tux to mine though. I just wasn't brave enough. Do what you want to do, you'll have a lot more fun that way.

And don't listen to Cody. He don't know what he's talking about. :P Haha, I literally laughed out loud when I read your first little statement.

I don't even know...

I mean, I really want to go cause I would miss so much with my friends and they mean the world to me.

But if I go as a girl in a suit, I would look like a butch (but the D-word) instead of a dude. I was thinking of having someone dare me to do it and then that would be my way to do it without looking weird to everyone.

Hmm...still deciding. Haha.

And Zabrak, just calm thyself. Stress does not do the body good, haha.

I have a friend who wears a suit to dances and other formal gatherings. Some people probably thinks she looks strange, but I don't think she gets any negative comments. But it might be different in your area. I would just go for it. As you said, stress is no good. Just do it. Or just wear the dress. Just pick and do it. Whatever you like.

hey, I have wonderful memories of my junior prom. The first of which being that I didn't go to it :D

I guess a dress could be better than not going... I'm just really competitive and wearing a dress seemed like letting that boy win :P. But yeah, do what you want to. Although my favorite bit of advice is still gonna be to not go ;)

I wore a dress to my prom, and really regretted it. I burned all the pictures later

I say wear whatever makes *YOU* comfortable

I understand where you're coming from. : ]

I just don't want to miss out on inside jokes. Our group of friends are fiends for those. : D

If it really comes down to any anxiety business on my end, I'll end up probably...see, I still don't know. I would get anxiety whether or not it would be a dress or a suit. But then I wouldn't live to hear the end of it if I didn't go, haha.

Personally, I should have not gone to mine. I wore pants and a shirt (no way in hell I was wearing a tux, I had the poverty excuse too heh). It was boring as heck, the food wasn't even edible, the dance was horrible, and the dresses made me jealous...so yeah, all in all, a really boring night I'd rather forget.

High School, College and numerous reunions for each, never went to a prom or reunion dance and never regretted for a minute not going.

It might have been different if I had transitioned back then and had been invited by a nice young man, but I hadn't nobody invited me and I went to movies, much btter and a lot cheaper!

Love ya,

Sally

I would wear whatever makes you happy.

But, way back when, I went to prom. And it wasn't worth it. Although, I was also sick with mono at the time. Still, I wouldn't have gone had I known it was going to be that boring.

Ha ha ha I was one who helped organize our prom, found the site and helped set it up and didn't go!!! I was too shy and was afraid to ask a boy and too shy to ask a girl so didn't ask anyone. :)

Wear what you want. Wear what YOU are comfortable wearing, not what you think other people will be comfortable with you wearing. Within tasteful limits, of course. Don't you DARE match stripes with plaid!

If you wear a tuxedo make sure it's a real bow tie that you tie yourself, not one of those pre-tied monstrosities, and only black. Colored bow ties are not allowed with tuxedos unless you are at a tasteless wedding and are in the party and thus are forced to match your tie with the bridesmaid's gowns, which are usually of a color not found in nature. A white shirt. Extra credit if it has a wing collar. If you do wear one, the wings on the collar go between the bows on the tie. Black pumps, not tennis shoes, not wingtips, etc. etc. etc. Knock 'em dead, buddy!!!!

Have a great time!!!

well, my prom wasn't too bad ...i guess that makes me an anomaly

i wore a suit and just went with my best female friend.....although i was transitioned relatively well at that point....so maybe i don't count in the realm of trans-prom stories

personally, i say that you should just wear the suit....you want to have prom pictures that you can look back on and not be cringing more than is normal. the dress would most likely make a trans-guy cringe.

although if you don't like the look of suit pants i think that they sell some that are quite a bit slimmer... they're not skinnies, but they're slim while still staying formal.... maybe something to consider?

anyways, i hope it works out for you :)

Dang.

What's up with all these boring proms? Haha.

I'd say its the reverse, prom is way more hyped than its actually worth.

Much like a wedding ceremony is made to be THE thing, and what do you know, 50% of couples divorce, and most within 7 years even. So yeah, throw a big party putting you 10k+ under debt so it comes to haunt you later :P

I'd rather have a small wedding (not Vegas 5 minutes still) myself, as long as I get to wear a pretty dress and eat cake I don't care really hehe.

Same for prom, its considered a rite of passage, meh, overrated. It's just a reason to get drunk and have sex for many.

so i'm a junior too. i could tell you my experience. i really hate going to prom or formals or dances that include dressing up and always avoided them. but ever since i came out it has been easier on me. i just had a formal last month. I wore a tux. i put it together myself. i didn't have to pay a thing. one because my brother practically had stuff when he was about my size and they fit me well. I don't think it will go too far if you wear what you want to wear. since you said that practically most people know who you are. and plus i don't think anyone would care what you wore. yeah maybe they might say stuff but it doesnt really matter. i went in proud and no one said anything except "you look real good" or "you look pretty sexy" depended on who it was lol. but yeah kids these days could either be understanding or don't really care as long as you don't mess with them. so yeah.

When I went to my friend's prom, I went as her "date". That way all of the people who knew me just thought I was doing it to be funny, and the people who didn't know me thought I was a biological guy. Trust me, there is nothing more insulting to me than being called a lesbian. I've heard so many purposely insulting things, but when someone calls me a lesbian, insulting or not, my blood boils. Looking back on it, though, I think I would have preferred to either wear a tux or not have gone to my prom at all. What makes the evening special is you, not anyone else. So if you're having fun, fun stuff will follow, like friends and such. Don't just rely on them for your good time.

Thanks everyone. I think I am going to wear a tux. Find a cool, edgy suit that goes with my lip rings. XD

You put it better than I did, haha.

To me, being called a lesbian makes my skin boil, too. I consider myself a gay male, not a lesbian girl, or even a straight girl. It makes me want to punch them. >_<

I'm figuring it all out this weekend, trying stuff on. : ]

I'm glad that you figured it out and concluded to wear what you like :) I think that plays a big part in some of us oldies not liking the memories from that time period :( It really doesn't count and doesn nothing for you to "go as someone else."

Make sure you get the suit taylored. :) You could also own a pair for real cheap by buying suits at thrift shops. It's slightly ghetto, but no one but you would need to know that you bought it at a thrift shop X-D

Don't forget handkerchiefs for your chest pockets. That way you can look snazzy. :)

Today I had a dr appt. When I checked in, I was asked my surname, which I gave. Apparently there were two patients with appointments at that time with that same surname. The receptionist asked, "Are you (my legal name which is feminine) or Paul?" I got such a kick out of it not being assumed I had the feminine name.

That must have felt affirming, albeit perhaps weirdly so. However, I'd construe that more broadly (no pun intended) as sexism rather than misogyny where the latter would imply contempt. Also, incidentally, I've heard chivalry referred to as "benevolent sexism".

My boss is in a panic. His business is a couple straws away from breaking a camel in half. He's just handling the stress very poorly.   My dad, though. He's handling things pretty well, as long as I continue to don't get massively offended by being called: son, boy, etc. His eldest is leaving the State and looks so different than he's been used to over the years. I haven't told him I'm on HRT, but to be fair the changes haven't been massive. I've always had boobs, more so after COVID weight gain and made more obvious with its loss, but now I'm not hiding them--and obviously wearing a bra. The estrogen has done some work, but nothing major (sadly). I think the biggest HRT changes have been my skin and a mild amount of fat redistribution.   Today I'm wearing my cheater, I almost have cleavage! :D I need to get another t-shirt bra to keep a good rotation. I only have two, one push-up, and the rest are unlined (great for Summer, but not great for my Summer wardrobe ).

I eat a ketogenic diet and have had no problems. I don't know about your case but I suspect it is the estrogen. Research the types of ways to take estrogen. Pay close attention to the bloodwork results. If they are not satisfactory, bring it up with your doctor. I take injectables, which are fully covered by insurance. It may not be the route for you, but something to consider. I emphasize to do your research and good luck. You can solve this. Be persistent.    Jennifer

This is my opinion, so take it for that. Fatigue is based more on what you eat. Eat a more healthy diet, and stay away from ultra-processed foods and that should help. Think of eating the way we did a couple hundred years ago before the industrial revolution. It's just a thought.   Jennifer

I like the fact that you found support and have close members of your life. That is very important. No matter where you are on your journey, you have to have the support. Or you drift, and you question yourself.    Looking forward to your progress,   Jennifer

The source of estrogen can matter. I started HRT at age 50. My avatar was the result. I started on pills, and moved to estradiol valerate injectables. However, there was a shortage, and I had to use a compounding pharmacy. The estradiol would evaporate in the vial, and couldn't get 5 doses out of it. I eventually move to the patch.    Over time I realized the patch wasn't working properly. And, the last time I visited my doctor he told me my estrogen levels were low. He asked me if I wanted to change to estradiol valerate. I jumped for joy. So I started my script for estradiol valerate. My prescription was ready, but I didn't receive my script for needles for a couple of weeks. So I bought my own (legal). I started with intramuscular injections. This requires a longer needle, and the estrogen is released into the muscles. It has a powerful effect right away but isn't stable. So by the time I took my next injection 2 weeks later, the estradiol in my bloodstream was almost gone. When I finally received my script for my needles, the needle was shorter. So the injection was subcutaneous. What is different with this type of injection as that the estrogen released is more even over 2 weeks (before the next injection). Interesting the syringe/needles my doctor prescribed are so much higher in quality. I am going to follow his path. My breasts are now perky again. And I will let my doctor guide me.    I wish you success on your journey. Let us know how things are proceeding. I am happy for you.   Jennifer

Patches are the HRT method of least risk. Be aware of your estrogen levels with bloodwork. My doctor took me off patches because my estrogen levels were low. And put me on estradiol valerate injections. I have to say that made a big difference. Be aware of the changes. I don't know your age, or circumstances, but I would research available options of administering hormones.    There are other methods of taking estrogen, and you should research all of them. When my doctor changed my prescription to estradiol valerate amazing things happened. He was slow to prescribe the needles so I ordered them online. I have used injectables before. Getting the nerve to poke myself with the needle was a great hurdle to overcome.   As far as a rollercoaster feeling, I never felt that as much as the excitement of finally starting HRT. That overrode everything. I couldn't focus on how my emotions changed, for excitement trumped all emotions. Let the emotions of starting HRT settle, then make the decisions you feel will best benefit you.    Good luck with your journey,   Jennifer
