Dress barn has a national policy of acceptance. That is a very safe and accepting place. Give them a try.

I agree with Charlie on Dress Barn, having had NO trouble with them over the years, even with an adult daughter referring to me as DAD when I was in a changing stall and she was outside shouting in.

For wigs, go to a regular local brick and mortar store. Call ahead and see it they will give you an appointment for a fitting room. They deal with medical patients who need wigs for a variety of medical reasons, and those folks like to be private. You have a medical / physiological problem and like your privacy too. They simply like to see wigs, and maybe you are in a play with a CDing character, such as the perennial little theater favorite Charley's Aunt, or a couple others.

I have found that dress barn is totally cool for cross dressers, the girls there are very helpful and awsome

Regarding "Dress Barn", my wife and I were shopping there for an outfit for her to wear to a wedding and reception. She was trying on an outfit and needed a different size, so I went and found it for her. As I was waiting for her to come out and get it, a sales lady asked me if I wanted to try the outfit on. I smiled and said. "Actually, it's for my wife who is in the dressing room." She then delivered the outfit to my wife, which we bought.

However, I believe that the sales lady was totally serious about letting me try the outfit on. If the store hadn't been so close to home ... who knows what would have transpired!

Several of the trans* groups in this area make trips after hours to Dress Barn where they are helped to find sizes that fit in an environment of acceptance. That can really help when on has never left the closet. I'm not surprised you were offered help. It is there company policy to provide a welcoming environment.
