Insomnia

Hi all,

As usual I can't sleep. I have an exam tomorrow so I went to bed at 9pm. It's now 2am, and I was lying in bed for hours in complete darkness. I've tried everything except sleeping tablets (which I don't want to take). I've never slept well since I was born and recently have been wondering if perhaps it's down to being trans. It sounds a bit far-fetched to begin with, but when you consider that essentially gender dysphoria arises from brain chemistry, could they be linked? As everyone knows, stress can cause insomnia and being trans is pretty stressful quite often. Has anyone else experienced this level of insomnia? I looked it up but couldn't find any studies on it. It would be good to know because perhaps my insomnia will be alleviated during transition. Anyway, it was just a thought I had.

I'm sorry, Zac, I haven't heard of any links, or studies regarding such a link. People can have insomnia for a whole host of reasons, most having nothing to do with being trans. Have you discussed this with a doctor, or been to a sleep clinic? Of course, there is a certain percentage of the populations who simply don't need as much sleep as most. But your best bet is to talk to an M.D.

Hi Zac. I'm sorry you're not sleeping well. I go through periods of insomnia, my mind just won't stop and let me sleep. I don't feel it is because of trans related with me but it certainly could be with other persons. I think it's just too much on my plate, stress, workload. If I can't sleep a cap of that generic sleep aid, (nyquil makes it) and a melatonin works most the time.

There is a very cool sleep app for smart phones. Google "sleep time" app, by anunzio. Free, works well. Set your alarm for when you wish to wake or earlier then after you stop the alarm you can view a chart your sleep for the night. Rem, light sleep and awake. They are also averaged out for a "sleep efficiency" figure. Viewing my chart and efficiency I realize I usually sleep better than I thought I did.

Good luck with the exams. Destiny Lynn

Hi Zac,

I don't know if there is any study linking gender dysphoria and insomnia, but here is a bit of personal experience:

I've had serious trouble to sleep for as long as I can remember. Over the last decade or so it had been quite intense and consistent: almost every night it took me at least one or two hours to fall asleep, even if I was already sleepy and/or tired by the time I got to bed. Sometimes (about once or twice a week) even more. Quite often, during weekends, I'd spend a sleepless night to force my sleeping cycle back into something reasonable. The only few exceptions over that entire period where extreme cases of exhaustion and / or drugs. But for the last 53 nights in a row I've had great sleep, falling asleep within few minutes of getting into my bed. That change happened just some hours after starting HRT. The correlation here and the magnitude of the change are rather extreme.

Of course, we can't extrapolate reliable conclusions from a sample of one, but we can make some healthy speculation:

It is obvious that, by relieving the dysphoria, some of the stress and anxiety has been dealt with. But I'd be willing to bet that, at least on my case, there is some chemical effect involved. Also, now that the exam season approaches, some of the stress and anxiety are temporarily back, and it doesn't seem to have any substantial impact on my sleeping patterns. Also, I recently quit smoking (which means a lot of anxiety during withdrawal) and have been sleeping ok. So there has to be something more than stress and anxiety to this.

Hey, Zachary

I've always had insomia, as well. Our minds just run at top speed at night, often with anxiety and sorts of jazz. So, yeah. Maybe transitioning will help you sleep alittle better at night- that can be a solution to some of your stress and therefore you might find yourself sleeping better. Not toooo far fetched!

Something I've started to promote sleep is yoga specifically designed for a good night's rest. It alleviated so much of my physical pain and insomnia, I suggest it. Maybe it'll help you too

Good luck!

I tend to visit Laura's when I can't sleep. It's not a cure, but it has helped. I see some posts here even say that insomnia has increased for some after HRT. It's complex, like everything, it seems.

Godspeed you on your own journey,

Love :) Raz

Remember your teenage years and being a night owl and staying up all the time? Might have to do with going through a second puberty. I myself can't last past midnight though, so it could be something completely else.

Talk to your doctor. There are non habit forming supplements and medications that might be helpful. It sounds like you are already doing things like limiting evening screens. Which is what I should be doing right now!

Day was fine at work.  The District Manager was there.  She actually likes me so everything was fine.  Since I was the lowest level person there she had to ask me the questions they ask every time they come.  Then apologized for having to ask me. (Yes I answered them correctly). After she left I learned that there was a meeting scheduled with her for May 23rd for the entire management team (4 of us). I’m not certain what that’s about.  No sense speculating it’s probably just getting ready for the summer crush.   good night 3 am comes early tomorrow.   Willow

Thank you. It seemed to me when I was driving home that I had a bit more bounce in the rear end over bumps so I'm wondering if the frame was bent. I will have them check it tomorrow morning when the do the appraisal.

There is just a feeling that this is normal when I wear f clothes.  As a biological male I am supposed to, I suppose, experience dysphoria in f clothes. Instead it is reversed.  Sometimes there is euphoria about being a girl, but it is because my self-perception is lining up with my self-expression. Clothing is actually secondary.  Or third.  Secondary is what my body looks like.  I am a girl regardless of what I look like. I just am one.  As I get used to this I will probably stop talking about it.  Most women do not go around announcing they are women all the time.  They talk about themselves but the presupposition is that they are women.  Never a matter of debate.

Do you feel euphoria when wearing feminine clothes? I'm curious about why you think you are supposed to feel dysphoria in fem clothes. I totally get why you would feel dysphoria with masc clothes. For me what urged my transition forwards was the amount of gender euphoria I got from dressing like a guy , and my dysphoria from wearing anything remotely fem got worse and worse until i get rid of evey fem article in my wardrobe and all my makeup, so I could concentrate on just being me and chasing the euphoria. Dysphoria didn't go away though, because I've been misgendered constantly and it hurts more when dressed in my man clothes . However now I'm on T, my doubts and dysphoria have massively lifted and I'm excited to see the masc changes to my body happening. I do have to learn patience though lol.

You're still cool to this Catholic... no worries... ;-)

Well that's no way to start off a birthday. Be sure to look at your frame just behind your rear axle to make sure it wasn't bent. When I was rear ended... At first look it appeared that my bumper was folded down, however the frame was bent which also bent the floor of the bed. I'm glad everyone is okay    Happy Birthday,   Mindy🌈🐛🏳️‍⚧️🦋

Well, I am a veteran.  I did manage to get an honorable discharge - just barely.  I was drafted to start with, and I wasn't wild about it.  But I figured it was my duty as a citizen, so there's that.  TBH I find it hard to stomach people who dodged the draft, going on and on about being such "patriots" and all, and literally hugging the flag. My egg hadn't cracked yet when I was serving, so I don't think being trans directly affected my time in uniform.  But there was most likely some subconscious stuff. Sorry, I don't think this is much use to you.

That was just one reference that came up.  I originally saw it somewhere else.  Technically, he did call for the eradication of "transgenderism".  But it would be hard to get rid of that (whatever it is) with us still here.     Yeah, later, when he got called out on it.   I don't really see how you can say this.  Sure he doesn't know what he's talking about, but the damage is real.   I will bend over backwards to give someone the benefit of the doubt.  But at some point…. I'm just not as limber any more.   They can say what they want, but actions speak louder than words, and when I see what is happening in red states it is obvious.  They do want to get rid of us.  I'm tired of pretending they don't.

For a time I would get an anxiety attack when I had to dress in male mode.  Haven't tried it in a while.

Indeed! Most happiest of Birthdays to you!

      Happy birthday @April Marie!

Thank for the birthday wishes, everyone!!!   It started great...and then I was rear-ended at a highway construction site this morning. I'm OK. The woman who hit me was shaken - was going fast enough to deploy her air bags. I was at dead stop. Her car had to be towed away. My truck too a hit to the tailgate and the bumper. It seems OK otherwise but I'll know tomorrow when they do the appraisal.   UGH!   Happy Birthday to Me!! :-)

"How did it go yesterday? Any trouble in Millville?" He shook his head. "Your biscuits and gravy are great." "Mama's recipe. She taught this girl to COOK." "Uh-huh.  Well, it rained the whole time.  We did the ground breaking in pouring rain.  Your friend, the former head of manufacturing, is now on the Board.  It looks like sunshine down there, he told me, with the missile plant starting up and they re-hired all the people they fired.  Millville Products is as it was.  And the Chinese money is still coming.  That was just an ugly rumor.  Gibson quit, but you knew that." "Missile plant, huh.  Yeah.  Gibson and I may go into business.  But I have been thinking-" "Yeah.  It's been declassified.  I can tell you they made missiles for Navy ships and planes during World War 2. It was shut down after Vietnam.  Several other supporting companies are moving in - paint, electronics assembly, a few others - that support missile production." "Okay."

That is, it's a great document in that it seems to clearly define things, not that I'm in agreement with it.

https://www.digitaltransgenderarchive.net/col/cj82k733h   I am now dissatisfied with the thread title because it seems to exclude Catholics and maybe others .  I am not sure what to change it to, so I will fuss over THAT now.
