Like orientation, gender identity is a spectrum. Many people really do identify as neither male nor female. This has gotten more attention as of the past few years. And indeed, the latest WPATH SoC discusses "Gender Non-Conforming" people and identities. At the 2011 WPATH Symposium there was quite a lot of talk about gender non-conforming people (also known as genderqueer and not in a bad way, some people use the term with pride).

I first gave a presentation on Genderqueer at a conference three years ago. A few attended. One year ago, the same conference (First Event) had several presentations on the subject.

I salute the university for recognizing that such people exist and allow them to identify as their true gender.
