A day at the university

I joined a GLBTQ+ group that is made up to advise my university on how to involve alumni and hopefully improve the universities work with students. Yesterday we presented our work and heard a great deal of information from both students, faculty and the folks who run the GLBTQ+ center on campus.

The conference took place in a large lecture room but i was the only trans* person that came to the presentation other than a wonderful graduate student who did speak. I found it a great opportunity to see how the university helps with the special needs that trans* students as well as graduates face. The university is finally offering HRT and has adequate therapy as well. By attending these events and being openly out (as well as noisy) i find that the gay community has come around to a greater understanding of our issues. I have also learned a lot more than i did about what they face.

The event was broadcast to any alumni who wished to watch. There are over 90,000 of us at this point. That made me remember how hard it was for me to out as myself. Perhaps my simply being there could help others. I was amazed that others applauded when i shared that the University had provided me with a diploma and transcript that used my new identity within weeks of my request. That simple act can help many younger grads who transition after graduation and are applying for jobs.

it was gratifying to hear about the expansion of academic work on GLBTQ issues. I was also great to see how students were able to attend conferences around the country with the help of funding from our group. Princeton has good support for trans* students now and it sounds like the Ivy league is really changing. The force of 'out" alumni certainly helps.

Overall it was a satisfying experience. It made me remember the protests and conversations during the Viet Nam era. I was a bit of an activist then. I guess that hasn't changed too much with age and transition. Well maybe i'm a little quieter.

Hugs,

Charlize

That's such a great thing you've been doing, Charlize. I don't think that anyone should be surprised that academia needs to catch up with what's been happening in our community, and addressing our needs, just as much as any other business group or industry. Even those in the medical field need, perhaps even more so, to understand us better.

I applaud your activism and willingness to get involved and make a difference. We need more folks like you out in the world. Every step taken is a step forward.

HUGS

Carolyn Marie

p.s. sorry for the bad grammar. Haven't had my coffee yet. :P

Thank you Charlize

It makes me think (as you show) to how we can well be helping others just by being ourselves and describing our experiences. Maybe not even standing out, but just being there as an example of how life can go on.

Even with the court ruling, the problem is that many of the insurance companies continue to have exclusions for everything unrelated to a vaginoplasty. For folks who are transgender females, we still get no protections to ensure we can get electrolysis (other than for genital preparation prior to vaginoplasty), voice/speech therapy or surgery, facial feminization procedures, or body contouring. There are many components that go along with managing our dysphoria. When the government mandates all of these measures, then I will say it was a victory.   I am still worried that all of the progress will be eradicated if the election goes poorly in November.

I have gotten compliments almost always from women. It feels nice.

I feel like some things are supposed to happen, but not everything is like that. You have those events that are (at least similar to) fate, but what you do from there determines a lot as well

I always picked the female character and was mad when there wasn't a choice.

I came up with a new strategy.  Replace the good 2 year old car we bought used with something that suits me. New or used but has to suit me this time and I’ll hang on to the old ford as long as it starts and runs for going to work when wife needs @ car.  Oh and yes she could drive the ford too, she’s done it many times in the past.  Movable pedals and seat combine to get here where she needs to be.  Now I just have to sell her on that idea.     now starts the search all over again but I can double my top range!

A frequent adage heard in 12 Step recovery circles -- Shit Happens!!  A little rougher version of FATE!!!

Sup singly, a superintendent prevented a student within the transgender community from changing current name, to the new name in which the student identifies with, I don't know how far back this story goes, but if you Google it under Oklahoma along with "student name change" the article should pop up. I'm not transgender, but I can relate to the process of legally getting a name change done, it's a lot of paperwork from court, a lot of traveling, and expenses depending on the laws from each state.

No one seemed to pay attention to me other than a young woman who complimented me on my skirt and an older gentleman who smiled at me as we passed each other.

Wow, I guess it’s the dat to be in trouble.  I’ve been hit twice by the ASM today and it’s my day off.  Why didn’t you, followed latter with a where is the.  Made me realize that I do t want to continue working long enough to pay for it. I guess I’ll just to have to stick with my 20 year old car for now.   I suppose sooner or later only one of us won’t be able to drive anymore.  Since I am older you might think it would be me but at this time i am the one that does all the driving except when she goes to church or the store when I’m at work.  She hasn’t driven anywhere since February and hasn’t driven more than 10 miles in perhaps a year.  Yet the “good” car was purchased for her not for me because she couldn’t drive the Jeep which we bought strictly for her because she wanted it.  But it turned out I was the one that really liked it.  Can’t win.

Had one like that one time that would bite you on occasion.  Got rid of that thing quickly.
