Wig Suggstions

Hi

I went through this 'hair forum' and found very little on wigs. I'm wondering if anyone would be willing to provide some education and brand suggestions.

My wife recently said 'it's time for a wig' and while I ordered an inexpensive wig for the mean-time, I'd like to buy a good quality wig for the long-run. I'm expecting in the $300 to $750 range. I've seen wigs from $15 to multi-thousands and there's just too much contradictory info by just using google.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. :)

Fiona,

I wear a wig from the time i get out of bed until i climb back in and have done so for over two years now. I must say that i really prefer what may be considered a cheap wig. It is artificial and that means i don't have to give it special treatment. It took a bit but i looked for and finally found a wig that works for me. I think that is different for everyone. I have mostly purchased wigs from Beauty Trends. Mine costs about $50 and i usually wait until it goes on sale. They last me for about a year unless i do something stupid like get too close to a fire. If i were to by a "high quality" wig i'd go to a store with a friend and patience. Styles and colors vary so much that it simply takes some experimentation.

I'm very happy at this point with a mid length (cooler in the summer). I love the color and highlights and often get comments on how nice my hair looks from other women. It's all I can do not to say: "I wish it were mine."

Hugs,

Charlize

I agree with Chalize, a lot can be gained woth buying a cheap wig. I have about 8 different ones yet only wear 2 of them now.

For me, it was quite a surprise when I put on a cheap wig, and saw "ME" in the mirror. This is a $15 wig I'm talking here. It wasn't about the quality, it was about the cut, and fit my personality. (most of my photos are in this wig).

I bought multiple wigs, in different styles and colors to see how they looked on me, none more than $23. Once I found a style I liked, I purchased a better quality one (still synthetic) for about $70, and I love it. I also recently purchased a shorter wig, super fun with red highlights. Everyone loves it, and it was only $24 or something.

With the all the costs associated with transition, I don't see that a super expensive wig as a benefit personally. I do plan to have some hair restoration, and grow ot long again in the near future, bit until then... Less expensive wigs... And a few different styles :)

If you buy an expensive wig right off, and find it doesn't work for you... Well darlin... It's totally gonna suck.

Good luck dear,

Kay

My first good wigs came from a couple of boutiques that also did make-overs for TG people, and were just a little over $100 each. Most of them are alive and well 10 years later, but I do not wear them as often as I used to. My gallery here has quite a number of my hair pieces in pictures there http://forum.lauras-playground.com/forums/index.php?app=gallery&album=1573 Wig brands I use, Jon Renau, Henry Margu, Louis Ferre, Revlon and a couple of others. Www.wigs.com and http://www.wilshirewigs.com are two online stores I have used, and the wigs that The Breast Form Store sells are all good quality that I would trust. Do NOT get a cheap human hair wig, they are terrible, but between $125 and $200 for a good synthetic wig is about right.

Thanx, everyone. I must say that I'm completely shocked that wigs in $15-$50 range don't turn out to be 'costume party' type wigs. I fully expected to do some looking around and buy a couple different styles of inexpensive wig before picking a style, but there is definitely merit to the idea of having a few styles depending on the mood and circumstances. And I absolutely planned to find a shop at some point although that will require some more courage building.

As for growing hair, I kept my hair about the middle to bottom of my butt for many years and then (if you'll excuse the pun) I got a wild hair up my butt and cut it. LOL I suppose it's moot at this point since my hair is seriously thinning in the front these days so there's not much point to growing it long again.

Thanx again :)

My hair right now in my avatar picture, and every other picture I've posted, is a wig. I simply love it besides the fact that it's not mine, and it's gotten me comments from three people at work - one of which was today and the first female. She asked me if it was my natural and I said yes, then I confessed that it wasn't my natural and she said "oh, you dyed it?". That put me on the spot and I want to remain in stealth at this job as much as possible, so I said yes I did. She told me that it does me well and looks good on me. The two ladies that know I'm trans commented on how real my wig looked.

I ordered this wig from the breast form store and I highly recommend them. The price went up by about 10$ I see, but here's the link http://www.thebreastformstore.com/wigs-incognito-star.aspx

God Bless

I've thought about growing my hair and then a top piece, which would be fine while I'm Fiona. However, when I'm Daniel, long hair in the back and bald in the front has that look like 'the guy just hsan't come to terms with the fact that it's time to give it up'. LOL!!! Not quite there yet, butit's seriously thinning.

I received my wig today. Still a bit excited/nervous about opening it up. Thats's silly, I know... In the last week we've got me cosmetics, that wig and a pair of pumps. It's a lot to take i, in a short period of time. I know I shoud be ripping them open... ohh, and it's been around 30 years since I've worn pumps. *giggle*

Thanx, Kayla. My wife and I were looking at wigs there the other night. I love that place. And based on the money I've spent there, I hope they love me too. LOL

I am wearing the pumps right now, trying to decide if I need another half size up :)

Thanx everyone. :)

So thanks for the budget recommendations, this real life feedback is great.

Ordered my first wigs today, went with black on one, dark chestnut on the other, because that's what my natural hair was; I heard wigs work best with your natural hair color due to eyebrows. Anyone want to share an opinion about color? (Seems kinda boring to stay the same)

My gallery has several colors of wig in it as well as two of my fun color wigs. There are also shots of my natural hair, as natural as I am gonna show it, because I would rather dye than go gray!!! You eyelashes are not a color thing, and eyebrows can be helped with make up. My gray stuff looks good covered with a MAC eyebrow tint that looks great with my bottle red color that will be refreshed in 12 hours from now by my colorist. I have surfer blond wigs and off black with red highlights and a number of highlighted blond wigs. that all look good on me. A little change in your makeup and you adapt to your hair color. That is part of Trans* fun. http://forum.lauras-playground.com/forums/index.php?app=gallery&album=1207

I've seen this on a lot of forums tbh. That's how a lot of content ends up on internet archives. You've got loads of bots scanning the site at all times and archiving it. Forums are actually nice (in comparison to social media) in that the guest count gives you a pretty good idea of how actively the site's content is being archived. Basically just don't post anything you don't want archived.

Kids are resiliant with therapy and strong support ;-)    They were all elementary age when their dad died and are teens now, and how they've grown and developed as young people, already, takes my breath away.   I'm working on communicating changes clearly and without shame, which is difficult basically all the time because of feeling guilty over doing gender "wrong" for so long. Working on that myself! <3

Allow me to add that people should think twice about posting pictures of themselves, with the facial recognition software that is out there.  Those in stealth or who are not fully out may discover they are suddenly and unwillingly fully out in ways they wish had not happened.

Funny how when i read the topic name i thought you were asking about the study of plants and animals.  I'm a bit into that as a farmer at va time when a cell phone makes plant  for insect identification easier than it has ever been.    Now on to your topic.  I don't farm in the nude.  I have wondered at whether i would skinny dip as i did as a kid without thought of how my body might affect others.  The effects of hormones makes me different from the average person and perhaps i'm "neither fish nor fowl".  I would certainly depend on who my fellow passengers on that cruise would be.   Hugs,   Charlize

This is also a relatively small forum and it can take a long time, seemingly, for someone to get around to replying to a post.

I am also pretty sure that several of them are folks who are "trans curious".  Sometimes folks who are trying to find their own identity, are attracted to trans folks or who are simply interested in the trans community.   There may also be some who wish to do us harm which is why ......... I've just learned to smile figuring "i'm on candid camera".   I'm sure many of our younger members never experienced that show so my age is showing.   Hugs,   Charlize

Most of those "guests" are web bots from China, Indonesia, France etc. looking us over. They are mostly benign.  All they can see or gain access to are the general forums.  Members should be careful not to post anything that could readily identify themselves such as real names, addresses, phone numbers, etc. They do not have access to our gallery, blogs or private messenger. They seem to haunt all forums. Not just us. I should add that they can make us known across the internet. That's how prospective members find us. Google would be a good example.

Heck I didn't even know they could go up that high! I just have a four burner and one to keep stuff warm. What kind of pies did you make?

That's all the matters.   Well me and the wife rode to Perkins for breakfast. As we were waiting for our food. Being it is Sunday There are a few gentleman in suits, my guess from church. I think to myself. I hope I never have to wear one of those monkey suits ever again. Now a nice dress maybe.   Hugs,   Kymmie

From time to time I've looked at 'Who Is Online" and I have consistently noticed that members are ALWAYS outnumbered by Guests by a wide margin, sometimes, like a minute ago, by more than a 10:1 margin.  I have never seen that before on an internet forum.  It can be explained partly by the nature of what this is, that it draws the curious and they are certainly welcome to read here, and to join, but it leaves me with a feeling of being in a fishbowl.  I wonder who ARE these people?  Donald Trump, is that you? Biden? Sinwar? Putin?  We can only guess.

So from time to time my brain gets a hold of information and puts it together with other information in weird way that get me thinking. I was reading about a nudes cruise that they are running out if Miami. It got me thinking that a transgendered person who is also a naturalist, has to be one of the most unlucky people alive. How does one manage that and does that ever come up? Not trying to make fun here, just genuinely curious. Things that make you go hmmmm....

No luck there, really. She's getting a signing bonus plus a little extra that I don't think would cover much in the way of the move, but it is something!   Oh my! I am glad to hear you're not passing anymore blood. I hope they figure it out soon! How distressing!   @April Marie @KymmieL @Mirrabooka @Willow @Justine76, thank you for the kind words and thoughts! We told our best friends last night. There were many tears. Now it's all about the work: selling the house (my wife's friend's son said he may want to buy it direct!), a job (a former employee of mine wants to bring me over to his company--and they're based outside of Tacoma!), and moving (just started going through what we don't want bring and donating things). So things have kicked off.   I'm not so sure of the job, it would be good to work with my former employee (he's great) but I fear the culture may not be super welcoming to someone like me--and the guy doesn't know I'm trans in any way. But I'll give it a shot as my authentic self and see what happens!
