Accessorizing your hair (wig)

Is it ok to put hair clips, and barretes in a wig? I got my first wig recently and want to accessorize like other girls do...

You should avoid the clips with metal "Alligator" teeth in them for the most part in synthetic wigs. Plastic banana clips should be used VERY carefully since the closing action can act like scissors at the pivot point. Smooth surface barrettes, bobby pin, and other plastic butterfly clips are pretty safe to use on synthetic and human hair wigs. Pony tail bands should be the ones with the ball and loop, and not overtightened. This is advice from my major wig experts who taught me about wigs. You can also use clip in hair extensions that have the little comb attachments. I put some dayglow pink and green extension into a couple of my longer wigs with no harm.

I use a plastic tipped plastic brush that is on a flexible backing like this one from Sally Beauty Supplies

Some folks will argue with me, but for synthetic pre-styled wigs they work very well. Be sure to use the wig brush on wigs only and not on your hair, untless it is an integrated hair piece where your own hair pulls through the wig.

I used to enjoy playing with a scarf, either making a loose tie in the back or as a band running from forehead to the lower back of the head. The colors and look can be very pretty and it keeps the hair back. Now that i'm wearing a short to medium length style it doesn't work as well.

Hint on the hair -- do not be afraid to brush it out very well. The pictures you have posted show it pretty flat which gives it a "wig" look. Take the wig in your hand by the front, (hairline) and start at the ends of the wig and work the brush up to the wefting to separate the fibers all the way up. When you have done that, grab the wig by the nape (neck side) and repeat the brushing out. Do not be afraid of being energetic in brushing or pulling out some fiber. Put the wig on a stand, and back-comb it near the top, and at the eartabs just a bit, then style the top hairs to the do that is set into the wig. This will fluff it up nicely and it will fit your face better.
