Male or Female Therapist

Hi everyone,

I have yet to see a therapist but I hope to in the not too distant future. Based on your experiences, do you recommend a male or female therapist. This may seem trivial and I know it is about getting the right match for me, but I am curious to see what others have experienced either good or bad based on the therapist's gender. Or should it even be a factor in my consideration?

So many questions...LOL

I agree completely with Marcie on this. The ones to avoid are the ones that will try to "cure" you of being Tran*s or are otherwise affiliated with a religious institution.. Check with your local LBGBT center if you are not part of a health plan that has its own therapists. Your state does have competent therapists, but not as many as some other places.

I agree with my sisters above. i found my therapist by talking to a trans* woman who i had grown to know. She was great and i found it easy to open up to a woman. That can be the deciding point. it depends more upon what makes you comfortable and the reputation of the therapist.

Ask around at a local LGBT center.

For my regular therapist, I specifically chose a female therapist. Pretty much all of my doctors are femals be design. Personally, I just feel more comfortable with female doctors... more so since beginning transition.

However, even where I live out in Narnia, I did find a local therapist, who was male, to assist me with evaluation and second letter for a pending surgery.... and he was great.

I would just say go with however you are most comfortable. You still need to click with them... or it's nearly pointless.

I also recently started counseling therapy and selected a female therapist. I feel like it is easier for me to open up and remain honest with other women than it is with men. I know it's ridiculous, but I have this fear at the back of my mind that men who hear my story will be more judgmental.

Thanks again everyone. I set an appointment for a couple weeks from now with a female. Like you Saga, that was the reason I chose a female.
