This doesn't suprise me at all. I was hopeing that Trump would continue to embrace LBGT and especially TS who want to serve. http://www.foxnews.com/politics/2017/01/11/trump-pentagon-likely-to-abandon-social-experiments-for-core-mission-under-mattis-say-experts.html            Guess we'll have to wait a little bit.Mike

Mattis is just one example of a Trump cabinet stacked with anti LGBT players.  Not only will Trump repeal policies that allow trans servicemembers to serve, but I strongly suspect a return to DADT and renewed persecution of LGBT servicemembers.  I can only hope that we won't see too much hostility with VA policies.

No LGBT Ally Would Appoint This Cabinet

Trump’s cabinet almost uniformly hostile toward LGBT rights

I do know the log cabin republicans are talking to the administration to prevent this. Let's hope they listen.

Hhmmm....I have mixed feelings re: this topic.  Thoughts & feelings, which are my own.

First, I read the linked article in addition to the posts (i.e., I don't just respond on the basis of a thread's title & the subsequent posts)....

Certainly there were cases where "don't ask, don't tell" did not work for some individuals, but did it work that badly overall, through several wars?  [I understand that there were cases where suspected GLB individuals were subject to harassment/assault at the hands of their comrades, but I would argue that the military could not protect an openly GLB individual any better.]

I am sympathetic to the notion of women serving in combat, through either a volunteer or conscription process.  After all, equal rights should entail equal responsibility.  However, the physical conditioning issue in mixed-combat units (i.e., male & female) is a  very real concern that cannot be ignored.  Perhaps, it the USA were to follow the example of the Kurds and establish an all-female combat battalion/combat-group, this concern would not be as significant.

W/ re: to ts/tg individuals in the military (serving in combat or otherwise), it could be very complicated in so many ways (e.g., housing, training/conditioning, medical care, et. al).  Perhaps it could be made to work, but I am not smart enough to figure out how that could be done in such a way that would not compromise the military's primary mission.

I do agree that the military's primary mission is war.  War, for the purpose of defending this country and its interests....War, to take the fight to the enemy....Experimentation, whether it be sociological in nature or otherwise, should not be implemented w/o some expectation that it might be efficacious to the military's primary mission.

My last thought, is to express concern for those in the military who have been encouraged to publicly declare their sexual orientation &/or gender identity.  I would hope that the military could find it possible to allow those individuals to continue to serve.

[Just as an aside, I'm wondering if perhaps many of the jobs currently being performed by civilian-contractors could not be resumed by military personnel, personnel who might not be deemed physically-suitable (or otherwise prepared) for certain military occupations/specialties.  Perhaps....]

Honestly DADT and kicking out transgender people costs the government money. It costs about $70,000 to train a soldier, and that is just basic training. MOS training is more. All told after the first two years. the US government probably spends over $100,000 training troops. If they are special forces, that training costs even more ($300,000 to $500,000). So to kick someone out over something that does not affect their abilities in the field is just dumb.

Also, it is a small minority of older soldiers and a small number of homophobic/transphobic young ones that have a problem with it.  So to accommodate those people you waste millions in training? It is just dumb.

There is a quote I love by James Webb, and for those of you who have not heard of him...

Jim Webb

Former United States Senator
James Henry "Jim" Webb, Jr. is an American politician and author. He has served as a United States Senator from Virginia, Secretary of the Navy, Assistant Secretary of Defense for Reserve Affairs, Counsel for the United States House Committee on Veterans' Affairs and Marine Corps officer.
And I quote:

"I and my fellow combat veterans stand on one side of a great impassable divide, with the rest of the world on the other."

"There's a great Marine Corps saying, If you were there, I don't need to explain it to you, and if you weren't there, I can't explain it to you.' That's the divide."

I served in Vietnam, we had soldiers of every creed, color, religion, and sexual orientation (we knew, and didn't care), and some of us were like me...gender confused as I liked to call it back when...and when it came to the fight, none of that mattered....none of it! We did our job!

We did not cut and run, back then if we would have had cis-gender females serving next to us, it wouldn't have mattered. If you don't understand that then please read the quote above again!!

LesleyAnne:

Combat gunner, Vietnam end of 1969,all of 70, and 71  154 combat missions. DFC to the 4th oak leaf cluster with the V device, and The Air Medal to the 6th oak leaf cluster. I mention only to say I know what I'm talking about!

And I'm a girl thru, and thru!

Oh yeah, I forgot,    @awkward-yet-sweetwhen your husband finally breaks down and decides to replace the stoves I agree a single professional stove even out of a defunct restaurant might well be the way to go when cooking for all those kids and adults. Certainly better that the situation you describe.  Or maybe from a used restaurant supply where they have professionally cleaned and refurbished it.

Wow, yesterday was a very active day.     @Birdie I hope they figure out where that’s coming from and get you heeled quickly. That it’s nothing serious.  Maybe going to the day care with a purewick will finally convince them to change their attitude.   @MaeBe  especially if you believe you are about to loose your job anyway, what’s to keep you in Minnesota ?  This could be a wonderful thing for all of you Washington State can be wet but it’s really not as bad as it’s made out to be.  If you are west of the cascades it is relatively mild not like MN in the winter time.  And east of the cascades it’s rather desert like around Yakima.     New car shopping can be fun but it can be very stressful too.  We talked about it over lunch yesterday. Strange thing is she kept coming back to the old Ford.  My response was instead of two car payments there woul only be one although I would expect it to be a little higher, but not nearly what two would add up .  Plus I wouldn’t have to continue working as long with only one as when I get the other things paid off I know we can live without me working.  Unless of course, the congress decides to mess with social security.  Right now I have three vehicles I want to look at two are at one dealer and the third at another.  All three are GMs two are newer with lower mileage but are also lower end on the GM line.  The third which is the one that most interests me is a Cadillac.  Let’s see there is a song from way back about a Cadillac and a Hot Rod Lincoln comes to mind.  Anyway it is an XT-5. I get my room and comfort, she gets her nice appointments and the ford hopefully will hang on as a spare for those occasions when we need a second car for me to go to work and for her to do ??  The downside is it has just under 80,000 miles and is a 2020 so in that regard we are slipping backwards from a 2022 with 25000  but going from a sub-compact to a mid-size.  The other two are a compact and a Midsize but neither would provide the expected comfort and features of the Cadillac.  The biggest of which are the pedals that would adjust and the seat adjustments. (My wife is 4’ 10” and I am 5’8” since my spine has shrunk.  The Caddy also has the lane safety as well as front and rear collision warning.  The mileage will go down and the engine requires higher octane gas but that won’t be too much of a drag since we can go to Murphy USA where I work or to Costco which isn’t that far away. 10 miles.  And it’s better than the Ford!   I guess we will see how this plays out later.   Willow

Two things amaze me, One how fast short haired dogs dry. Two how did you keep from loosing your glasses? I'm glad you wear a life jacket while kayaking even on smooth waters such as ponds or lakes. I'm guessing you learned a few things about landing and exiting the kayak.    Hugs,   Mindy🌈🐛🏳️‍⚧️🦋

Aside from the X-Files, Gilmore Girls is easily my favorite TV show. I originally watched the original airing in the commuter lounge at my college starting in 2000 because I was embarrassed to watch it at home when I living as a man. Now that I am out and transitioned, I watch it openly and wear Gilmore Girls t-shirts at work on days that I wear a skirt. For Valentine’s Day, my wife bought me the DVD’s. Yesterday I had to stay at work late because of an IT problem (I am not IT so I just had to make sure the pump stations telemetry was functioning properly before I could leave, IT did the actual work) and so I watched it on Netflix. Lorelai Gilmore inspired me to change my name to Lorelei. Yes, I picked a more traditional spelling on the name. The mother daughter interaction between them is heartwarming and sometimes hilarious. Last week I just started rewatching it again. Ironically I relate most to Luke, very rare as I almost always relate to a female character. Anyone else here love the show?

Good morning everyone,   @Birdie continued prayers for you as they figure thing out. I'm glad you're being properly cared for.   @April Marie I love the pageantry of the Kentucky Derby the bright dresses, and fascinating hats worn by the ladies. As for the mint juleps... I'll pass, they're just to aromatic for me.  We'll be watching "The Fastest Two Minutes in Sports" as well.   @Adrianna Danielle & @awkward-yet-sweet it is amazing how a new stove seems to cook food better. Cooking for 36 people is a phenomenal task, and if you're doing it on anything less than a professional cook stove. You're preforming miracles, and I wish you the best.   My yard work is done for the day, because I don't have to wait until Saturday to do it. I'm getting use to this mostly retired situation. The windows and doors have been open since I first got up and the yard is full of bird songs. I have the best neighbors because they don't start their noisy yard work until very late morning or early afternoon.   Hugs,   Mindy🌈🐛🏳️‍⚧️🦋

I took an involuntary swim wearing my quick dry hiking pants and shirt. Lifejacket not shown but present on the rock I am sitting on. Watson is dry now but I am still soaked. I capsized my kayak 5 feet from the shore trying to land on an island. Water in the pond was surprisingly warm considering it is early may in upstate New York.

@Birdie best of luck to you, my friend.   @MaeBe, nothing ventured, nothing gained! Good luck!

Oh I will. He loves to just sleep on the couch and sleep. Not very active at all which I'm mixed about. Less to do but also want him to do more too.

We had a German Shepheard/Lab cross! It was actually our son's dog but when he moved out, Axel stayed here. ❤️ He was soooo awesome! Totally goofy, but really smart, and a million percent lovable. Unfortunately, he didn't even get to see his fifth birthday. 😢 He did both hind knees in quick succession, which were repaired, but he re-injured one and it wasn't repairable. The grief we went through after we made that horrible decision was far worse than anything we have ever experienced before or after.    @Ashley0616, please be gentle with his joints until he is all grown up!   This pic is when he was still a puppy.
