Cost of HRT and advice

I was hoping that someone here could provide me with information on HRT(MTF). What is the costs of spirolactone and what is the cost of estradiol individually per month? Also what are the prices for other things such as meeting with doctors etc? I'm going to begin looking into these things soon. Also I'm not sure whether or not my insurance will cover it.(Fidelis) Also should I go to a psychologist first or a general practioner? Also there are no gender therapists in my area, so that is not an option.

Hi, there. Your questions are very hard to answer, because costs can vary hugely, for a variety of reasons.  Those include which drugs, which dosage, whether shots, pills or patches, whether covered by insurance or subsidized, etc. etc.

That said, in many places the cost of pill form of spiro and estradiol shouldn't be that much.  When I was paying cash, I could get a month's supply of both for $20 or so.

The initial cost for doctor visits can be steep, because of the blood tests usually ordered and the need for an initial office visit and follow-up.  It can run around $100 per visit (cash).   But once you have your treatment regimen established, you might not need to see the doctor more often than once ever 4-6 months.

But there are ways to save money, too.  Doctors associated with non-profit service providers, like LGBT centers, universities or family planning centers may offer reduced cost treatment.  You should shop around for the best drug prices, too, as they vary widely even within the same town.

Thanks for the advice. I've posted this else where. So far there has been some variation in the prices, but the HRT seems to be relatively cheap based upon peoples personal experiences.

I believe I read that Walmart's drug program has both Spiro and Estrogen/Estradiol for very reasonable prices.   My TG healthcare provider is in Boston at Fenway Health which is outside my HMO plan area so I self pay for my care.  I go to the pharmacy there as well.  I use patches for E with Spiro tablets and at the increased levels I'm on its about $40 a month.   As Carolyn suggests there are places to get reduced cost medication and care.

$20 for both E and Spiro with my insurance, but I've got good insurance. $25 copay for my old therapist back in NC, $35 copay for my Doctor back in NC. I don't know what any of that will be in the future here in CO.

Thanks for your answers. They have all been much lower than what I expected. The one thing I really need to know is should I go to a general practioner or psychologist to start this process?

That also depends on your provider. Some doctors will start HRT based on informed consent, while others will, based on the WPATH standards, want to see a letter from a gender therapist first. A GP may also be comfortable starting and managing your HRT, or prefer to refer you to a specialist such as an endocrinologist or a GP who focuses on care for the trans community.

Thanks. I understand that not everyone is comfortable doing it and that I might be referred to someone else, but who should I go to first? GP or psychologist because I seriously do not have a clue who I should contact in this area.

You can find a list of gender therapists here: http://www.lauras-playground.com/gender-therapists

For doctors, it can't hurt to start with your established GP, if you have one. If not, try checking radremedy.org, or ask around to any local GLBT center or trans support group. Local word of mouth can be the best way to find good providers.

There were no gender therapists in my area and even if there were, I do not own a vehicle. So I asked for help here on LP and what I found was a therapist that offers online therapy or 'eTherapy', via Skype webcam. She follows the WPATH Guidelines and was able to write me a letter to begin HRT.

After seeing her for a bit, she gave me my letter and I searched for an Endocrinologist that was pro-LGBT to begin HRT treatment.

The answer of which Dr. to see first really all depends on the individual doctors. If you can find a GP or endocrinologist that you know works on informed consent, then you can go there without seeing a therapist first. However if they don't, you will need to see a therapist first. The easiest way to make sure you don't have any "wasted" trips to doctors is to see a therapist and get the hrt referral letter first.

So, I am curious. Is the Governor going to mandate vaginal or penile recognition photos before one enters the restroom? Considering the Governor has no balls to do the right thing, will he have to pee against a tree outside? Inquiring minds would like to know. I love it when the job recruiters contact me about the wonderful jobs available in Oklahoma. It is so much fun telling them there is no way I will ever go to Oklahoma. When there are no workers, then they can shutter the place.

Ngl, probably Sonic the Hedgehog, the Beatles, or the Monkees. Those are the three subjects I know the most about so I could drop hours of info on them.

Thank you! I'm out of coffee so I have been drinking hot tea instead. Looking forward to the 1st. It's crazy that we are almost in May. This year has flown by really quick! Good to hear that y'all got to sleep in. Hope you have a good weekend too!

It's nice to care about others but you need to live your life as you please. No one be your only source of happiness. Love yourself and don't look back. I lost over 40 family members it hurts but apparently, they didn't truly love me. True love will always be there through the thick and thin. I can honestly say that HRT has made me think in ways that I never thought I would. I get myself some shoes or clothes every month because retail therapy not only helps but it is a reward to myself to show love. I have over 100 dresses. I have a whole walk-in-closet full of clothes and 67 pairs of shoes. I love who I am. I was born in 84 so not all people in the 80's think that way. As far as the name just take your time and be happy with it. I knew I loved the name Ashley. Take care and welcome!

WOW @Ashley0616 it’s good that you have skills to treat traumatic injuries, as well as the ability to remain calm while managing others needs to get yourself and the boys ready to go to the hospital. Proud mama bear skills. I’m glad that he’s doing well.    Meanwhile back at the ranch, we slept in and I’m just now finishing my 3rd cup of coffee.    Hope everyone has a wonderful weekend.   Mindy🌈🐛🏳️‍⚧️🦋

Well yesterday was not fun. I was getting ready to make dinner and I hear screaming and crying. I look over and my son put his foot through glass. He gashed near his Achilles tendon. Thankfully that is intact. I didn't freeze for a second. All of my military training came into play. I doctored him up and got Jett ready and myself and we headed to the ER. He is doing ok today. He says he is in pain but doesn't need Tylenol. He is a tough cookie!

Hi,   It's seems today is my trans birthday.  I'm beyond excited. Just picked up my testogel from the pharmacy. Although I naturally have doubts as I'm sure do we all, they are rapidly disappearing. Yesterday I was so nervous I kept claiming I'm not trans, despite grinning like a fool knowing I can pick up my prescription the next day. I'm shaking and on the verge of happy tears. I will put on my first sachet this eve. Thanks so much to this forum and kind words from people. This is the first forum I found when I began seriously questioning.

While the Soviet Union did not end up being the source of all evil, I believe that history has shown that Joe McCarthy generally was right. There ARE all kinds of Marxists slithering around. And if that had been dealt with firmly 75 years ago (or more) the nation wouldn't be in the shape that it's in now.    And while I generally oppose the idea of intervening in foreign affairs, the world probably would have been better off if we had taken care of issues in Russia and defeated the Bolshevik Menace back in 1919. God bless the memory of Admiral Kolchak.   Getting back to project 2025, my belief is that Republican efforts are inappropriately focused on trans folks. A minority of a minority does not wreck a nation. But it is easier to focus on trans folks because they can look like they're doing something. They don't have to address the real problems, and really they don't want to address them because they would have to address themselves.  They would also need to admit that the 50 State version of the USA cannot be saved.
