New to HRT

Hello All:

I am going to be new to this HRT and I am looking forward to it.  Wanting to know what HRT does to individuals and hearing stories?  For myself, I am looking forward to having softer and smother skin with starting to develop and getting the shape as well.  Does HRT help with all that?

Hope to hear back

Here are a few in no particular order because we are all affected individually and my body's response would not predict yours.  Some of these you may recognize soon and some later, and some will sneak up on you.

A reduction in GID

A feeling of calmness in your demeanor

Breast growth (and pain at first)

Change in body odor

Less perspiration

Softer skin

Change in Complexion

Weight gain

The need to go to bathroom frequently (Spiro related since you need to stay well hydrated)

Jani's list is pretty comprehensive.  I would only add to that the slow down in the growth of body hair, and hair also becoming finer.  That often takes 6 months or more before you start showing significant changes, and as always, it varies from one person to another.  HRT will almost certainly not help with male pattern baldness, unless you are taking Finesteride, nor will it likely cause facial hair to decrease.

Your muscle mass will slowly decrease, body fat may redistribute in a more feminine pattern, the penis and scrotum may decrease in size, and spontaneous erections may slow in frequency and duration or even stop completely.

For more information on the effects of HRT, you can read this:  https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hormone_replacement_therapy_(male-to-female)#Estrogens

Welcome to the club, Amy.  Have a seat, strap yourself in, keep your hands and feet inside the car at all times, and enjoy the ride!

Thank you both for your help.  My therapist in PHX also said the same thing.  Including the group members in the group that my therapist leads all said that HRT will effect everyone different.

Right now, I am really hoping for softer skin and breast development.  Been wearing my breast forms more and more and I am at the point where I hate taking them off when I go to work.

I look forward to sharing my experience once I start

Thanks

I think the salient point is what Carolyn points out that it could take up to 6 months for changes for manifest.  Remember that puberty takes many years, whether you start at 13, 33, or 63!   Just enjoy the ride.

You most likely may see complexion changes later to more clear and opaque tone.  My ruddy appearance, like being in the wind all day is gone.  Just remember that you're pushing your body through a second puberty.  The first one took years to accomplish what it did.  Be patient with yourself!   And enjoy life's journey!

I am only about 6 weeks on hrt.

First I felt really week but got slowly then at about 3 weeks I was about the same as before.

second about 3 weeks breast pain tolerable.

Third I seem to be less upset and less anger. I seem to be happier and in a better mood.

Congratulations on starting hrt.

Sex drive anyone???  Before HRT, my sex drive was causing me extreme angst.  I self medicated with herbals for a year and saw some reduction sex drive but it really tanked when I went on prescription HRT.  I don't remember how long it took to drop to nothing but I'd guess it was about 6 months.  Good ridden!!!!  ...Loss of "function" wasn't far behind.

It's interesting to hear everyone's experience.  Many similarities, but even with those there's differences in intensity and effect.  One thing I'll say about sex drive.   For some, it just changes from that pleasure-driven "I gotta satisfy a bad itch" to more of a softer kind of emotional "loving" experience.  Perhaps more of a feeling of romance and emotional connection vs. caveman driven pleasure and creation.

Regarding body odor changes, that's generally related to less sweating due to estrogen levels vs. testosterone levels.  Higher levels of testosterone cause more sweating in both men and women.  When your body's natural bacteria break down the sweat, it causes odor.   More sweat - more odor in general.  Estrogen tends to reduce the amount of sweat we produce.  In turn, body odors tend to be less - "different".  Ask a woman going through menopause about those sweating changes.  As a side note, women have more sweat glands than men.

Anyway, enjoy!

Hey All:

I like hearing everyone's experience.  I know that everyone's experience is different, but glad to hear about the effects as well.   Before I start HRT, my therapist likes to send individuals to take the MMPI-2 test to make certain since this is a big decision and after the 6 month mark according to my therapist is when you cannot go back.  So this test helps to make certain and it's a personality test.  I go to take the test on Monday Sept. 25th and then get to go over the test and then get to be referred to a doctor.

Thanks

happy trans birthday! I can't speak personally on the subject, but I hope hormones bring you the changes you're looking for <3

That’s super healthy, to see that something that becomes common has less effect on you and that you are able to decipher these feelings.   Sadly, this trend tends to only deaden good feelings as we tend not to let bad feelings attenuate the same way.   I have noticed less euphoria, but still feel the dysphorias that I have. Sometimes the good sneaks in and reminds me, but often time it’s just me seeing myself in the mirror and being comfortable about what I see when embracing my realized self. I may not get the same buzz I once did, but I don’t feel incongruous when looking at a more “drab” reflection.    Wishing you strength, you are amazing!

Congratulations! and Happy Trans Birthday @LittleSam! That is such a BIG milestone.  I can still remember walking out of my clinic with my first HRT presciption.  I was on Cloud-9.  Wishing you all the best in the start of your new Journey!

maebe thank you I try to be. I thank God for blessings, try to share them, beg forgiveness for my shortcomings n vow to try to do better...2 priests have said no, God doesn't condemn you just for being trans...but apparently evangelicals do   I shall vtry dear thank you

Meet him at the being good to others part of Christianity. At the heart of it, there are excellent tenets of the faith. Those that condemn are judging, Jesus would have us be selfless; stone casting and all that. Are you a good person? Are you putting good into the world? If your gender is an issue for God, let God judge. In the mortal realm, let your actions be heard.

and just fi sweeten it..I'm catholic n he hasn't been for years..he's evangelical..whatever that is

Let’s stick to cite-able fact. Most of my posts have been directly in relation to LGBTQ+ rights as it pertains to P2025 and I have drawn direct links between people, their quotes, and their agenda. I have made reference to the cronyism that P2025 would entail as well, by gutting, not cutting, broad swathes of government and replacing it with “conservative warriors” (I can get you the direct quote, but rest assured it’s a quote). All this does is constantly force the cogs to be refitted, not their movement. To say that agencies have directly defied a President is a bit much, the EPA did what Trump told them to do at the direct harm to the environment, the department of agriculture did the same by enacting the administrations forced move to KC which decimated the USDA.      How about Betsy DeVoss for Education? Or Bannon for anything? What about the revolving Chief of Staff position that Trump couldn’t stay filled? Or the Postmaster General, who did much to make the USPS worse?   Let’s not mix politics with racism, sexism, or any other ism. Because Trump made mainly white, male, appointments—many of them not, arguably, people fit for service—or unwilling to commit to term. I can argue this because, again, he’s up for election and will do what he did before (and more of the same, his words).   Please delineate how the selected diversity appointments have negatively affected the US, other than being black, women, or queer? Representation matters and America benefits when its people are inspired and empowered.

When I first started figuring things out, I got a lot more euphoria. Every time a friend would use he/they pronouns for me, I'd get this bubbly feeling, and seeing myself look masculine made me really happy. Dysphoric state felt more normal, so I guess I noticed the pain it caused me less.   Now, it's more just that my pronouns and such things feel natural, and dysphoria is a lot stronger -- I know what's natural, so experiencing the opposite is more jarring than everything. The problem is, most of my natural experiences are from friends, and I rarely get properly gendered by strangers, much less by my family. I've found myself unable to bind in months due to aches, colds,, and not wanting to risk damage.    It partially makes me want to go back to the beginning of my journey, because at least then I got full euphoria. I'm pretty sure it'll be like this until I medically transition, or at the very least get top surgery (you know all those trans dudes online with tiny chests? Not me, unfortunately). It's a bit depressing, but at least I know that, eventually, there's a way out of this.

Major mood, right here ^^^    I've listened to Lumineers to a long time (a major portion of it by osmosis via my mom), so that is almost painfully relatable

As for getting a button-up/formal pants suit, you can try to talk to her more -- Cis women in tuxes have worn tuxes in recent years, after all, (for example, Zendaya) so it can still be a relatively safe topic. For jumpsuits, I'd recommend going with a simple one with a blazer, if you can -- this'll make it look overall more masculine. There's a lot of good brands, but going for one without a lot of extra glitz on it will make it look less feminine under a blazer. I don't know many specific brands though since I usually just get my stuff from chain stores, sorry :<   When it comes to your hair, if you can't cut it, you can look up tutorials on fluffing it up instead. If you can pull it off, it can look a lot shorter and more androgynous instead!
