Looking to possibly relocate

April

Recommended Posts

I am retired and will be starting transitioning soon and have been researching on possibly relocating. The place I would like to go will be trans friendly and have a good transgender resources like therapists, endos, health insurance (obamacare). I am in northern NJ at present and have looked into jersey Shore, Virginia and Delaware. What do you think please include your recommendations along reason(s).

We are in central jersey near the river north of Trenton.  The Lambertville New Hope region is very GLBT friendly as is the area north along the river.

Hi April.  Retirement can be a wonderful time that allows us to do many things we couldn't do or have time for.  I hope your retirement is all you expect of it.  As to relocation, I have considered this for some time.  Now that I'm on E, I find I do not particularly enjoy the cold weather as I once did so I am looking for a warmer climate.  We have a couple years until my wife retires so I have time to research and do some exploratory visits.  I'd like a place with little to no snow, temps > 40 degrees but not beyond the high 90's, good healthcare, a good social environment, in a walkable community.  I have family with homes on the gulf coast of Florida so that may be a consideration.  I've found areas on the West coast that might work although my wife may balk at being too far from the grandkids.   We're also thinking about a condo rather than another single family home.  I am concerned about giving up our great summer weather where we are but I also fear the experience of hurricanes and forest fires found in a number promising locations.  There has to be some great place!  This is a good website to use in your search as they capture a lot of good data points.  https://www.bestplaces.net

Best of luck in your search.

What are you looking for in "trans friendly".  NJ isn't "trans friendly"?

It's not that NJ isn't "trans friendly" it's just kinda expensive to live here and I am looking for other possible options. Jani423 mentioned some that I am interested in like healthcare, social environment and weather (NJ weather is kinda cold though) I've used this http://www.bankrate.com/retirement/states-ranked-from-first-to-worst-on-retirement-2/#ixzz4HuNFZtla as a begining reference but it does not have anything about the transition resources that state or area may have. Like I mentioned Delaware is an option but looking at the resource locator here there were no close resources (these I think are anyone needed for my transition like endos, hair removal, etc.)

I think parts of Delaware would be good to live in.  My family lived there in a college town when I was younger although it may just be a little too cool for my new sensibilities.  If you want to go further South, the Tampa FL area has a good sized transgender population so there are certainly resources there.  The last HRC survey provided information about where people live.  While not 100% certain, you might assume there to be readily available services where the population in larger.   As to a central depository of data, I haven't found one.  You pretty much have to narrow your search to a state you're interested in and go looking from that starting point.

I'm in a place with no state income or sales taxes, although we have property taxes so tax rates are definitely a factor in my search since it will affect my financial quality of life.

This is a good piece about tax implications.

https://www.marketwatch.com/story/most-tax-friendly-states-for-retirees-2014-01-31

There are only four states listed here with no sales tax.   Most are cold states, like mine.

https://taxfoundation.org/state-and-local-sales-tax-rates-in-2017/

This ranks the states as to transgender rights.  All the good ones are again, cool states.  Mine isn't a particularly good place, but I escape to MA for healthcare and ME for social interaction.

I was wrong about this citation.

It is actually the Williams Institute, the Law School at UCLA that published demographic data.

If you are in Delaware close enough to Philadelphia there are quite good services there.

I have found some people correlate TG = child predator ... just as some have correlated homosexual = child predator...    I am baffled by the TG = unsafe connection ... my wife tends to think this way, that this is all about sexual deviancy ... I try to ask how my preference for wearing frilly socks with embroidered flowers and a comfortable camisole under my lavender T-shirts is sexually deviant (or sexual anything) but I don't get very far...

Not sure.  The perp is a minor.  The problem here is NOT transgender, the problem here is incompetent and criminal administration.  See https://www.nbcwashington.com/news/local/family-of-loudoun-co-student-sexually-assaulted-ineptitude-of-all-involved-is-staggering/3231725/ It is more than annoying that people think the problem here is TG and that other people think the solution is some stupid statewide law.  Like an appendectomy to deal with an ingrown toe nail.    Since Loudon, I recall a boy was asked not to use the girl's restroom at a high school by one of the girls.  He, overwhelming her with height and weight,  assaulted her, claiming he had a right to be there.   Later I think eight girls beat him severely in another girl's restroom.  Again the problem is not transgender, the problem is assaults in restrooms and common courtesy.  TG is used as a smokescreen and it seems to paralyze thought among administrators who do not want to do anything to provoke controversy.

Time to get with your Primary Care doctor and be referred to a neurologist or an orthopedist.  It could be many things, too many for any of us here to guess at.

Other than the Boy Scout motto, oath, and law. I use two:   When asked how I'm doing? In all honesty I reply. I would have to make something up to complain. If asked to explain further: I reply. I know someone is having a tougher time than I am, and I pray God blesses them.   I also recite this quote that I have tagged in my signature: Courage, doesn't always roar. Sometimes it's the quiet voice at the end of the day saying, "I will try again tomorrow."-Unknown    Saying these things daily keep me motivated.   Mindy🌈🐛🏳️‍⚧️🦋

If this goes on, I am conceding the real possibility of being stopped in WM or somewhere by a concerned citizen who tells me, "Lady, God made you female.  I don't think you should be trying to look like a man. You need to return to your true gender and be comfortable living your life out as a woman."   Begin odd and awkward conversation.  I have been thinking about this this morning.

There are many MAGA GOP types who are not transphobes, of course. Some MAGA GOP types are transgender.

I'm hoping to read the next section today.  Many of the reforms they are calling for are good, such as expediting the military procurement process, and have nothing to do with transgender issues.

Good afternoon,    I have a young friend who is vegetarian and married to a full on meat eater. They have two areas of their grill clearly designated for their different cooking requirements. When she’s cooking she uses tongs or chopsticks to handle any meats. When he’s cooking he respects her request not to cook her meals on the side where meat has been. They get along fine and respect each other.    When she attends our house, she usually brings her own food, but knows I will clean my grill to meet her requirements. We love and respect her commitment to be vegetarian. I love that she trusts me to make her comfortable when visiting us. There are ways to make it work.    Mindy🌈🐛🏳️‍⚧️🦋

I was going to call it Numbness, then I realised well.. it isn't. basically, yeah, it isn't.   this only happens to me sometimes. I'll be lying down and my legs will.. well, I guess lock?   If I straighten them out, they will unlock- when I roll over again, they will lock again. this lasts for around 10/ 15 minutes I guess   it's not pins and needles either
