I guess i've changed

Some time ago i was at a photo shoot for a group of my paintings.  The photographer who is a dear friend asked if he could take a picture of me.  Knowing that he often had taken picts of other artist i said yes knowing he would somehow fit my artwork.  Here is the result, beard, stash and all.Thank goodness for change!

I have trouble recognizing myself as well.  At the time i was doing work like the picture below.  That was in the late 90's or early 2000's.  Bearded ,drunken and unhappy i was painting rainbows and no-one understood the reason.

Wow, Charlize, your avatar photo and the portrait are remarkably different. They seem like two different people living very different lives. One happy and peaceful, the other not. It's nice to have them for reflection, huh? I do like the work you were doing at that time. I'd hang this in my living room

A complete change! When I get chance I will have to take a photo of the self portrait I painted in 2008. Last week at art group we had a mini exhibition in which I showed it. A fairly recent member who has not known me long had real difficulty recognising it was me (although it was an early work so perhaps not brilliant ).

Tracy,  Here is a self portrait from the late 90's done on layers of glass with oil paints.  When i look at it i can remember the pain i (he) felt at the time.  Maybe it's time to do one with the smile i feel in my heart today.

You're braver than I am, Charlize. I've always hated being in a picture. Although an exception was when I was in my outfit for luge. In all my mom's pics of the family, there's this funny guy hiding in the back LOL!

 

You do look much happier now than in the pic. I'm glad! The pic doesn't look like you. You've bloomed into such a beautiful person!?

I can certainly see the pain in this artwork.  I also see a lot of talent, nothing like what I used to do with acrylics.

Charlize, These are the self portraits I was speaking of. The one in 2008, I painted when I was just starting (and it shows lol). The other is from a photograph my partner took of me on Shanklin Beach, Isle of Wight, UK last year. They do show that I have changed lol. I can see that we have very different styles in art. Your approach is refreshingly different. (in my art group mostly everyone sticks to realism rather than more abstract forms). I usually use acrylic, which is what I have used here.

I'm finding this thread most fascinating. Self-portraits can be so powerful because the artist is revealing aspects that she may not even be aware of. Charlize, I think an art class could discuss yours for a while! The color, empty expression, and liberal use of paint seem to unearth so much of your identity at the time. And Tracy, the beach painting is marvelous. Like a breath of fresh air.

 

Most of my self-portraits were rather bizarre and all depicted suffering. When I moved on to digital art, I shifted to only female portraits using mannequin photos - I love mannequins! My avatar is a mannequin. Since then I've done dozens, all projecting something of myself that I didn't fully understand at the time. Now that I've come out to myself, I do.
