Testosterone and Acne

I'm approaching 3 years on T soon and am still struggling with pretty bad acne. It started around 6 months in and just seems to only get worse as the years go by. I have tried almost every over the counter product, herbal remedies, drinking water, changing my diet........ but nothing works! I can't afford to go to a dermatologist so thats out of the question for me. I never had acne before starting testosterone, I would get maybe one or two pimples a month at most, now I almost always have at least 6 and new ones appear daily! Along with scarring and constant red marks on my face. I thought by a year or two it would be done? A lot of other trans guys I have seen online (some who even started T after me) have had acne similar to mine and then it went away!

 

So I am curious if anyone else has had this problem and what did you do? Will the acne from testosterone EVER go away? I hate being in my 20's and still dealing with acne! Sometimes I think about stopping T just because of how bad the acne makes me feel about myself. ?

I had that same problem. I'm sorry to say (because you said a dermatologist visit isn't accessible) that the only way it went away for me was when my doc prescribed accutane. I had it prescribed by a PA, not a dermatologist, so maybe if you have access to a regular doctor or physician's assistant or nurse practitioner they could prescribe it? It seems like cis guys who get hormonal acne usually grow out of it, so maybe there's hope that it will go away as your body adjusts to T with time? Or perhaps your doc who prescribes T can lower the dose a little to see if it helps? Good luck!

I am 65, have been on T for many, many years, and still get some acne on my back.  I have kept it off of my face by washing once or twice per day with salicylic acid acne wash and putting a combination of salicylic acid gel and benzoyl peroxide cream on my face every night. My wife cleans my back with a salicylic acid pad every night, but I still get the breakouts regularly.  My PC doctor said that cleaning daily is the best way to keep bacteria at bay.  As ChickenLittle said, prescription Accutane usually works well, but it does have the remote potential for creating or intensifying depression, so it's important to stay in touch with your doctor when on it.

Have you tried non-prescription acne medications? various additives to keep the skin clean?
