Needless to say, I both see her point and agree with it wholeheartedly. The news report she was referring to appeared in another place I follow, (Here?) and I noted there that I do know of cases where the police were shooting themselves in the foot by using the dead names in at least two cases.  Sadly, even carrying notes about how you wish to be remembered in death is no assurance that public authorities would honor them, and could  use them against the dead.

I am aware that in some states o counties, coroners are required by laws to list the gender of the deceased based solely on physical appearance, and list the name based on documents found on the body or elsewhere.  There may be room to change such laws to allow for more discretion on the part of the authorities.  In any case, such laws don't effect how police publicize the case; that is their discretion, and as you point out, Vicky, they need to work smarter.
