I just found insurance won't cover my LGBT therapist. What do I do now?

I'm not sure of all of your details, but in many cases it's against the law in the state of new york to deny this sort of treatment.

Many therapists "code" insurance submittals as treatment for anxiety or other catch-all item other than gender dysphoria.   As far as rules, I don't know the particulars of your insurance or the company that issues it but many larger businesses "self insure" their workers and may have a company like Cigna (for example) manage claims for them.  The company I retired from does this as does the company my wife works for.  There are somewhat different rules.  

 

Talk to your therapist and ask how they code invoices.

Ok, so this was a false alarm because my therapist uses a billing company and that was why her name wasn't listed in the system. I was able to make an appointment with her and will be seeing her for the first time next week.

That is good news!  Let us know how it goes.  In the meantime take a deep breath.  I remember how excited i was when i finally had an appointment scheduled.
