Abnormal liver prevent HRT?

Hi all.

 

So I had a call with my GP today and it turns out that my latest liver function results are high (my testosterone is high too, but that's a different story) and my GP seemed concerned to the point that it may mean HRT is a no-go. This is really worrying as I don't know what will happen if I get told I can't start HRT. Has anyone else had problems getting the go-ahead with elevated liver stuff? I basically never drink, have never done drugs and don't smoke. I was told I have a fatty liver a few years ago, but the thought of having to sort that out has basically broken me. I'm more than 40kg lighter than I was when the fatty liver was diagnosed, so I really doubt losing any more weight (although I do want to lose another 10+kg) will help. ?

 

This news has shaken me quite a lot and the stress isn't going to help my already elevated testosterone levels. ?

I'm sorry to read this Jo.  I would get as much clarity on this as possible.  What are the apparent risks and if there is anything you can do to alleviate them?   I'm not a doctor and I'm not saying there is a safe methodology for you.  Each one of us is different.  There are remedies to fix the testosterone issue if your doctor is just concerned about estradiol.  There are transdermal intake systems where the hormone enters the body in a more "clear" manner than oral according to my endocrinologist.  Be your own advocate and ask a lot of questions but please don't compromise your health.

There are HRT delivery methods that bypass the liver, such as transdermal patches and gels and injections. This way the drug goes directly into the bloodstream. Oral medications are metabolized in the liver and kidneys before entering the blood stream, so oral HRT may be a concern in your situation. Discuss options with your doc and with regular blood tests you should be able to start HRT. Best wishes!

I will certainly be doing research into this (I should get the full results in a day or two) and will see what I can see. But it's a relief to know there may be viable alternatives. Especially as, apart from the occasional "cheat" day, my diet, exercise and general approach to life has  been (I think) generally pretty good for the last few years.
