Hey I kind of asked this already but I wanted to ask in a different foru m as well as (hopefully) get an explanation of the process of getting on hormones. Could a family therapist who is working with me on my gender identity write a letter of recommendation for me? Does it specifically have to be a gender therapist? Also what is the process of getting on T with a letter of recommendation? Thank you tons guys!

My answer to this question would be yes.  There is no specific qualification for a gender therapist so a qualified could certainly write a letter.  My therapist had the knowledge of local resources and was able to assist me in finding a path both emotionally and physically.  At this point "confirmed content" is also all an adult needs.  I would look at the resources posted on the main page of TransPulse and see if there is a provider close to you.  You can also speak to your primary doctor who may well know how to guide you.

Hope that helps.

There are many doctors who will prescribe HRT meds based on the "informed consent" approach, and require no therapist recommendation.  The Standards of Care no longer require such, but they do recommend at least some therapy, with or without a formal letter of recommendation.  Many of us here recommend it as well.  But to answer your specific question,  I agree with Charlize; any therapist can make a recommendation for HRT.

I see a general therapist who works with all kinds of people including trans people. He gladly wrote me a letter of recommendation.  I think as long as your therapist is supportive they should be able to do it.

I was recommended to him because he had experience with transgender people. He knew I was trans when I began seeing him.  He asked what that meant to me and where I saw my journey going and I told him what I planned to do.  When I came to hormones I told him that as far as I knew I would need a letter from him stating that he felt I was in a good place mentally and emotionally for HRT and that it had to be on his letter head.  He agreed and we wrote it together during a session.  It took 2 maybe 3 sessions to get it to where we were both happy with it and then I took it to my HRT clinic.
